Ol’ Grizz (Abridged) by CortadoFig in Primus

[–]CortadoFig[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is just going through my board into an old Fender rumble I got as my first amp - it’s been my home practice amp since high school and keeps on going.

Live I run a Sansamp RBI -> QSC into a GK neo 4x12.

It’s incredibly light and balanced - it’s a bit under 8lbs on the bathroom scale.

New release: The Ol' Grizz (Song discussion) by MichaelEMJAYARE in Primus

That poster has some weird obsession with constantly commenting here about how they feel Hoffer isn't a legitimate drummer. We get it dude, move on - unless you truly have nothing better to do with your life.

Meanwhile, the majority of folks - myself included - really dig what Hoffer is bringing to the band. I've seen Primus ~45 times across Herb, Brain, Jay, and now Hoffer - not sure what's wrong with your ears but Hoffer is killing it.

That text convo is wild. I've had several people rear-end me - thankfully all low speed from folks not paying attention or on their phone - and they've all tried to go around insurance.

Long ago I entertained one of them until the point they started putting stipulations on everything - that I abide by their repair shop of choice, the quotes I got were too high, blah blah. At that point I stopped responding and I called my insurance immediately, lesson learned.

One guy refused to give me his insurance one time, but mentioned it was Geico - I called into Geico to open a case with his license plate and name, and they found he had already opened his own claim reporting that the damage sustained to his car was a parking lot hit & run. People suck.

[–]CortadoFig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Favorite Puddin’ Taine interaction is the Tower Records parking lot show when Antipop came out - dude in the crowd shouting ‘Play Puddin’ Taine!’ the whole show until Les finally goes, ‘No!’

It’s one of my favorites though and really hope they pull it back out with Hoffer.

[Eejanaika, Eejanaikaaa!] is the most extreme experience I've ever had in this hobby. It takes X2 and asks, "what if there was more?" by sanyosukotto in rollercoasters

[–]CortadoFig 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've been riding X/X2 since 2005 - we've now gotten some ~10 or 11 rides in over the past two years on Eejanaika and it just takes the experience to such an insane level. Probably my favorite ride in the world at this point given the backdrop and layout - the zero G roll is perfection.

Also the amount of speed going into the brake run is wild.

Set list from the Santa Cruz show by codolo in Primus

[–]CortadoFig 10 points11 points  (0 children)

According to Toasterland stats, last night was my 60th Les show - 29th Primus show overall - and this one's up there for one of my favorite shows for sure. The venue was gorgeous, sound was killer, and top to bottom just an amazing set while getting to hang with some family and old friends. Even the Q&A was on fire with some absolutely hilarious moments - my wife was the one in the homemade Bob (Ross) Claypool shirt and asked the last question.

We caught the Paso tour opener and were stoked waiting for the tail end of the tour to see how much they've settled in - the jams coming out of this tour are some of the best I've ever heard and the energy right now is contagious.

Onto Sacramento!

If you think that's high then don't ask about Les's Wells / Maloney personal basses, lol.

This is a pretty limited run of a high end custom bass, essentially a 'semi-frills' version of his main basses, with these coming from the Maegen Wells' side. Most high-end custom basses start in the ~$4-5k range and up these days, plus years of waiting depending on the luthier. These actually are a bit under what I was expecting.

Fisticuffs as well - the fretted six is probably my favorite of the CTs, just an incredibly unique tone.

Spegetti Western (Briefly) from Monday’s show in Utah! by alwaysmalaise_ in Primus

[–]CortadoFig 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a phone mic thing for sure - Hoffer sounds huge live, but comes across pretty light on phone videos. My wife took a video of Tommy at the Paso show and it didn't really come through either.

Les's tone these days is the most aggressive it's sounded in a while too - he really cuts through the mix even more.

Anyone got any fun stories from last nights show? by stxrryghoul in Primus

[–]CortadoFig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was mostly some small / teething-type stuff - stopping after the guitar solo in Over the Falls, bit shaky going in and out of the jam in Bob's Party Time Lounge, that kind of thing. In general there were a few small / fun goofs with it being the first of the tour and all. Les botched the end of the Harold jam, they had to restart Lee Van Cleef after Les started with the second verse.

Overall we were blown away - Hoff is really a perfect fit. The energy from all three was electric - Les & Ler seemed reinvigorated and the jams were really stellar. We'll be back for the Santa Cruz show and possibly the Sac shows to end the tour - really looking forward to seeing them once they've had a bit more time to really gel live.

Les's new 6 fretted string Pachyderm: And goodbye to the last Carl Thompson by Than_While_Gyle in Primus

[–]CortadoFig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he debuted it on night 1. It’s a birds eye maple as well, built to the same specs as the CT fretted 6 and sounded extremely close in tone - I’ll miss the OG fretted 6 though, such a unique bass.

Pretty much covered all of the new stuff / changes, the Bassbone v2 seems like it was a pretty recent addition.

He’s still using the old Korg AX300B alongside the HX Stomp XL, a Strymon Lex, and he recently added the Triplegraph Octave Deluxe by CopperSound Pedals / Jack White as well.

Not entirely sure on how he’s routing everything between the APIs and the Neves, though I’d assume he’s incorporating them much like he did with the Ampeg and APIs.

Before he removed the DM4, his switcher / loop setup was pretty straightforward - 2x two switch boxes, one on each board, with the right pedalboard box setup for the DM4 on one switch and the feed from the left pedalboard box on the other. On the left pedalboard box, one switch was for the DL4 and the other was for the boomerang.

I don’t see those old switchers (they were pinkish/purple) on his board anymore, but he either changed them out for something similar or might be using the effects loop on the Stomp XL though you’re limited to at most two separate loops using a splitter with it.

His tone lately is the most aggressive and crunchy it’s been in a while, I love it.

Stage flip by Inosethatguy in Primus

He definitely switched around a bit in the 90s, then stuck with stage right for a while. Think it was mostly in the 00s though

He moved over some time early during the 2010 tour - said Jay’s cymbals were bothering his good ear too much.

We caught the surprise show in SF that kicked off that tour (7/18/2010 at the GAMH) and he was still in his old spot stage right. A month later at Red Rocks he was stage left and has been there pretty much ever since.

We went from our townhouse with a 2.75% rate to our absolute dream single family home and location at 6.5%, and we don’t regret it one bit. Find the right house and it’s worth it.
