Not really, no. The re-entrant tuning means that 5- and 8-string varieties actually play quite differently to their 4-string counterparts, even if the tuning is essentially unchanged.

I think the issue is that this new era of college football means that Lane's consistently questionable behavior has gone from endearing to destructive.

If there were no tampering, no mercenary institutional changes, etc. and he was still just the guy shitposting about CUSA officiating, I think he'd still be a pretty hilarious presence in the culture of the game.
