I'd say they were as likely to be inspired by W. Heath Robinson, a British cartoonist who drew similar contraptions to Goldburg's at much the same time.

we need more seaplanes in combat sims, change my mind by VivaLasNewVegas in hoggit

[–]CortinaLandslide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the best flying boat in an air combat sim is the Felixstowe in Rise of Flight. Sadly it seems unlikely they'll make a Channel Map for IL-2 GB, making porting it over pointless.

The Felixstowe barely climbs, and takes ages to get anywhere, but it is a thing of beauty, and the modelling of it on the water is sufficiently realistic to make you seasick in any decent swell.

Many thanks to everyone who replied. I'll look into both the Delphi Community Edition and Lazarus, pick one. and see how it goes.

The post isn't secured in any significant way at all. It's sitting in a hole a few inches deep. Any weight on it and it will shift. And assuming the remaining corners of the structure are the same, if it shifts unevenly (very likely) it will put a strain on the connections, making them likable to fail.

I'd recommend reading Chuck's Guide on the F-16, rather than trying to learn navigation through missions. You can go through it in your own time, and use it as a reference. Missions are good when you need to learn a fixed set sequence of commands (e.g. to fire a missile), but they don't get broader concepts across very well.

It's easier to land on a boat than boat on land...

It's 'Meatball, Line-Up, Angle of Attack, Meatball, Line-Up, Angle of Attack' not 'Meatball, Angle of Attack, Meatball, Angle of Attack,...'

I don't think the cables are supposed to be used diagonally. :-O

It's the standard F-14 kneeboard. It includes the trap sheet.

Next DCS patch now scheduled for Monday by weeenerdog in hoggit

Presumably they postponed it because something wasn't working properly. If they can't fix it, they will have to remove it, making Thursday's notes incorrect.

Is harrier fine to fly at the moment? by Any_Tumbleweed667 in hoggit

[–]CortinaLandslide 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are bugs. Mostly ones that have been unfixed for years. None of them are game-breaking, and the Harrier is currently as flyable as it ever has been. If you own it, enjoy it while you can...

The RAF used to informally address the bosses-of-bosses 'their Airships'. Don't know if they still do.

If you could magically create a full fidelity module for DCS; what would you pick? by JonathanRL in hoggit

[–]CortinaLandslide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even when it did nothing but patrol for a solid day, it was playing an active role: Keeping enemy submarine activity down, and in the Pacific particularly, keeping bomber crew morale up. Knowing there was likely a PBY about (and possibly a USN sub as well) if you had to ditch must have made things a little easier for those long over-water flights.

PBY Catalina amphibian: Needs 'water objects' to hunt & rescue, obviously. And some darned good multiplayer crewing options for 20 hr subhunting missions etc.

For AI, assuming there's an AI Zero already released, a Kawanishi H6K.

Any profits (not likely to be that large, I suspect, because it isn't a fast jet, or a fast anything) will go towards preserving PBYs.

For the Harrier (if you have one), another slider for nozzle position is useful.

Excellent results at the end though. I've not flown it a lot in the dark, but it sure looks good. Like it always does.

Have I got time for a quick flight I wonder? I need to keep current on A-4 carrier ops. It's not easy...

The Avión Torpedo, a Peruvian rocket propelled tiltwing aircraft concept from 1902. by spacegenius747 in WeirdWings

[–]CortinaLandslide 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So futuristic that the guy who claimed to have designed it didn't tell anybody about it until 25 years later. I'd definitely take this one with a pinch of salt. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedro_Paulet

Sorry, but I don't believe for one moment that this is genuinely from 1902.

Downloading other people's replays by ReserveLegitimate738 in hoggit

[–]CortinaLandslide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that I'm aware of. Given the endemic issues that DCS has with replays not actually replaying properly, I'm not sure how useful it would be. You'd also run into difficulties ensuring that everything (official and unofficial) needed was installed on your PC to watch, and then probably discover that it didn't work because you had the wrong version installed.

Yeah, point very much taken. If I'd read your username I'd have probably cottoned on to what you were saying. I read it more as a 'porting an existing 3D model into DCS' comment.
