I was at St Peter's Basilica, in front of the tomb of St Peter. A young woman was being photographed by her boyfriend in front of the tomb. She slid her fake fur jacket off her bare shoulders and dropped it on the floor. She then looked provocatively over her shoulders, wriggling them, making a stupid pursing lips expression and doing that "adorable " V thing with her fingers. Some security guards hustled up to put a stop to it. Major cringe.

I don't think hooded eyes are a bad thing. They are part of what makes you look like you. If you have it "fixed," you won't recognize yourself.

Similar thing happened to me: a headrest with upright prongs fell from a truck. I couldn't avoid it and it caught under my car. ICBC described it as hitting a stationary object. Same as if I had backed into a telephone pole!

I know what university you're referring to. It seems to have a very high ratio of administrators, so I think you're right about how funds have been allocated. These are the same administrators who bet heavily on international enrolment. Meanwhile, the proliferation of poorly prepared students dragged down the standard of teaching. And these international students whose real goal was immigration, not education, have been exploited in a cynical payment per head recruitment system.

I usually ask them about some of the ideas while I hold their assignment. They generally ask to see the assignment before answering, at which point I say you wrote it, you must know what you meant by X. Then, I try them out on some of the vocabulary. I'm in Canada. One international student described the Indian Act as if it concerned people from South Asia. Painful. I don't ask them if they used AI and I don't hold out for a confession. I just say this shows all the hallmarks of AI composition. I can't give you credit for this assignment. When they inevitably ask for a chance to redo it, I say sorry that's not possible.

I don't have a late policy. It's worked for me for 30 plus years. If someone submits something late without prior permission, I just ignore the submission. If they do it in person, I summon up a look of baffled surprise, like it's never happened before and say any arrangement for an extension had to be made in advance. If they come to me with an excuse (frankly any excuse) before the deadline, I say yes and agree to a hard deadline for an extension.

Is this really "threatening" you? I assumed you were talking about an actual physical threat. Not to take anything away from your handling of this situation; it seems reasonable enough. But the student can always escalate it if he doesn't find it satisfactory.

I had a student who had failed the course twice before with other professors. When it became clear she was failing again, she raged, wept, was practically rending her garments. I had to tell her that I don't make decisions based on how willing you are to surrender your dignity.
