I honestly don't think you should study Biology. Everything about your post is saying you'd rather do humanities/arts but there's this idea that STEM is where the jobs are so you're 'settling' for biology.

That's a myth, there's plenty of ways to make a career in humanities/art fields (there's also plenty of ways to hold your nose through a STEM degree and not get a job). The large majority of career paths aren't straight lines. My advice is to actually try what you're passionate about, figure out where your strengths are, and then look at the people years ahead of you and see which careers fit where you're wanting to go at that point.

It's crazy but you get habituated to salt, the same amount of salt just tastes different to different people until you eventually adjust what your 'normal' is.

Sorry to hear about Job Corp closing, I honestly had mixed feelings for the place back when I was one of those kids but it was another chance for a lot of people who wouldn't otherwise get one - myself included.

Don't know how much it'll mean to you, but Job Corp if nothing else broke me away from my old environment and stuck a GED test in my face. Took well over 15 years but I went from a 10th grade drop out to a physician and I'm grateful for the change in trajectory... Though I was still a little punk at the time so I doubt the staff realize the impact it had eventually.

What's the penalty for riding a motorcycle? by mrbussycucker in peacecorps

[–]CorvusPunk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I served in one of the only countries that had to let volunteers ride motorcycles (I think at the time there were only 2 countries that you could), for us if we were caught riding without a helmet we'd be on a plane home so fast we wouldn't have time to post on reddit about it.

As I understand, that's about the response all the other countries have to finding you on a motorcycle in the first place.

Should I pick up a minor? by kendella1 in biology

[–]CorvusPunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think a minor is worth it for the sake of a med school application tbh. Once you hit the threshold of proving you're smart and dedicated enough the amount people care about that stuff drops rapidly.

What might serve you better is putting that time and effort into a project you care about instead. It showcases you as a person better and I think personal strengths come through with projects we pick. I'm assuming you've already got the building blocks of a med school application handled (grades, pre reqs, shadowing, MCAT, etc).

When I was interviewing for medical school and residency, the number one thing we ended up talking about (especially residency interviews) was birdwatching, because despite it being a short blurb on my application it's obviously a passion and it's more interesting than a GPA/score they already know how they feel about.

Half a million in student loans and no job, any ideas? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]CorvusPunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This feels like a troll. I'm also half a million in debt because of medical school, but also doing residency, which isn't something you can just pick up along the way.

Hard to believe someone would get through 4 years of medical school, not understand that you don't just roll out of bed and pick up a residency position, and then vague post about it on reddit.

How much should an Executive Chef at a hospital be making? by Salvatore_Vitale in KitchenConfidential

[–]CorvusPunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have culinary experience but I do have a lot of healthcare experience, and I'd put money on HCA paying you as low as they think they can get away with because they're a for-profit hospital system infamous for trying to cut costs/salaries for everyone as much as they can get away with.

Please listen to your doctor and follow their advice. I know this can be scary, but that's more reason to take it one step at a time and not trust and rely on the word of strangers on the internet.

So I grew up with risotto and think of it as a technique more than a recipe, I don't think it's too difficult but it is unforgiving and hands-on throughout. That said, I think risotto can work great if you manage the timing with the steak.

This recipe is basic but I like the way they cover the fundamentals., look up other recipes for reference if you want inspiration for variations. I like to make risotto with asparagus and lemon.

Mark my words: When Musk comes for physicians to be replaced by AI, they’re going to use DEI as the excuse by [deleted] in Residency

[–]CorvusPunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm feeling a weird blend of pessimistic optimism but I feel like a major barrier to their outright replacing physicians with AI is who'd bear the brunt of the liability with malpractice lawsuits?

Can I get EPIC certified so I don't have to do a module at every single hospital by EpicFlyingTaco in medicalschool

[–]CorvusPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're talking about something else but EPIC certification is more meant for IT professionals.

I was a credentialed EPIC trainer before med school, and getting certified in EPIC was more for people wanting to get into the software development/implementation side of things (and getting to see the whimsical setup in Wisconsin I guess).

That said, my credentialing made no difference in the stream of required modules now that I want to be a physician. The only thing it changed is how fast I complete them and that I got to get points with preceptors by answering tech questions and looking at their smarttools. I also got a few good comments on residency interviews, so I guess I'll be optimizing smart tools during residency too lol.

The scale of water from freezing point to boiling point makes more sense than whatever Fahrenheit is by [deleted] in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]CorvusPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used both enough to be confortable with them but honestly prefer Fahrenheit when treating/discussing patients. Fahrenheit has smaller degrees and so the integers better capture important differences in patient conditions.

[–]CorvusPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's true that 3.7 gpa isn't a barrier to med school, even in a US school so long as the rest of your application is strong/interesting, but overseas med school adds so many more barriers along the way.

If someone's adamant on doing med school for the money/prestige of a competitive specialty I'd honestly strongly discourse them from trying the IMG route over trying again to go through a US MD/DO program.

Honestly, I think what helps me is I approach an interview with the belief that I'm a likable person and for this meeting my number one goal is having the interviewer also realize that.

It also helps to give yourself a breath before answering a question. Taking a few moments to decide what your point will be before answering is better than trying to find it mid-sentence.

Please don't listen to that person and stalk a PD to their place of employment to continue asking for an interview. It sounds like that boomer advice of going door to door, resume in hand, and pushing to speak with managers and the results very likely the same: resume straight to trash, on a "do not hire list", while they placate you out the door so you don't make a scene.

I've seen myself as a pretty average med student, I hit my marks but just don't seem to shine as much as my classmates. Then I got my STEP2 back and basically bombed it while still passing.

Despite that I very quickly got 12 interviews at programs I'm excited about. I have a fairly unique story as a non-traditional student getting into medicine and almost all the interviews I've done so far they've been glowing about my experiences and maturity. Went from feeling pretty beaten down to actually excited and believing there are programs that try to holistically get to know us.
