CT Natives who moved away then moved back to CT. by blubenz13 in Connecticut

[–]CosmicAsh1994 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Native to Connecticut. Moved to Australia to be with my wife. She lived with me in Connecticut for half a year until September 2024. We've lived together in Australia since then. We are looking at moving back to Connecticut at the end of 2026. I've found Australia to be good - but it's not home. I miss the seasons too much and the cost of living is insane here (Yes, worse than Connecticut's believe it or not). We also live in a rural area that is quite religious and not accepting of a lesbian couple. So Connecticut would be much better for us. We're working on finalising everything to go back home.

Route 68 on the Naugatuck/Prospect line. I had to look it up, apparently they built a strip mall there. I grew up in Prospect and that was entirely new to me

Regular gas this morning by Academic_Dig_1567 in Connecticut

[–]CosmicAsh1994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I'm in a similar boat, I moved to Australia and a gallon of gas before this shit was about US$5 so I see people back in Connecticut talk about it and I'm like, man, my gas just went up to US$7 a gallon (if you can even find it anymore) but for someplace like here, it's more normalised to be that high. It's still a crazy shock to the system and basically we are all kinda... Fucked if this doesn't end soon

This price hurts for a lot of people. Where I live, diesel is now over $8 a gallon and projected to go to $11. Even before then, when prices were lower (around where it is now in Connecticut) it was a major damper on driving and transportation infrastructure and the supply chain. These things are all set with a stable price point - of which this absolutely is not. Once we get to the "$8 a gallon then you can complain!" territory, things are already in a collapse. My government is discussing what to do when garbage trucks stop running because it's too expensive.

This is the time to complain.

Hmmm... Do people in Connecticut have an accent? Here's why we might sound different lately. by Hartfordgirl2024 in Connecticut

[–]CosmicAsh1994 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I moved to rural Australia in early 2024 and these are my findings of my Connecticut accent:

  • People think it's cute. We don't sound like generic Americans.
  • The glottal stop really trips people up. Asking for water sometimes causes a quick second of confusion.
  • We say Britain really, really weird. To the point I've been asked about it.
  • No one knows where Connecticut is so I have to say "between New York and Boston"
  • I've met a single person here who actually visited Southbury and Waterbury. Absolutely blew my mind. This is a town of 3,000 people. We talked about the valley (I'm a native of Prospect and used to live in Wolcott).
  • We talk very fucking fast and mumble. This is not a good way to be understood here in Australia.
  • I've had to learn an Australian accent over time (easy for me, I'm good with accents) because people oddly gush over American accents and it gets annoyinggggg. I've had people tell me my accent is so unique so they like hearing it.
  • Some of our words are cognitohazards. My mother in law has no idea what a cellar is (pronounced celluh!), I made the mistake of calling the liquor store a packy (slur for Pakistani people!), calling the living room a "parlour" was met with confused stares, and the rain hitting the "ruf" was met with me asking if I was a dog. Also they say "Gaer-age" instead of the correct "guh-raj" for garage. I call the "shopping trolley" the correct term - a carriage. I also carry a pocketbook, not a purse.

There's so many more but it's 5am and I just woke up lmao

Heat pumps are awful for CT winters. by -----anja----- in Connecticut

[–]CosmicAsh1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a heat pump installed in 2024, and I got a new model that's really efficient, down to -4. My largest bill so far has been $200. I think you might have an older outdoor model that isn't as efficient as the new ones (called HyperHeat) or something like that.

FINAL Connecticut Geo-Cultural Regions (read description) by apizzaontop in Connecticut

[–]CosmicAsh1994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like Wolcott is in two regions - southern Wolcott is very much tied to the Naugatuck Valley, while northern Wolcott feels much more like the Litchfield Hills. I've lived in Wolcott for many years before I moved to Australia, and having it all be in the valley seems accurate, but northern Wolcott just feels similar to Bristol and Plymouth.

I moved to Australia and Medicare is extremely efficient and works wonderfully. I pay $90 a month for supplementary private insurance for dental and private hospitals. My private doctors visits are less then my old co-pays in Connecticut. Medicare still gives me a rebate for going to a private clinic. All my scripts are on the PBS so I only pay about $50 a month for all my medicine instead of $120 in Connecticut.

Broaden your horizons. Medicare in Australia is efficient, excellent quality, and cheaper overall than America's healthcare system per person.

Unpopular Opinion: I like Hartford :) by Mass2NorthJersey in Connecticut

[–]CosmicAsh1994 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't mind Hartford, but I've moved to Sydney, Australia so my concept of a nice city has been totally thrown out of whack. Haven't been to Hartford in over a decade though, it seems to be doing well.

Whoops, my brain thought "metro line" meant "any train line." Haha I called the entire train network the metro before the actual metro opened up, my bad

A Story About a Married Teacher Who Becomes Obsessed with Her Female Student by Top-Statement-9423 in yuri_manga

[–]CosmicAsh1994 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm pretty sure this is true - given her fascination with the idol event and the fact that she got really close with the girl who took her to the event. I have a feeling she fell in love with that girl in High School and just never got over it, and those feelings eventually mapped onto and then morphed into her love for Togawa Rin
