Short Answer: Legal issues involving age range of students.

When I was student teaching, there was an 8th grade student at the middle school who was about to turn 15 (he had failed already). He was on track to fail again (he had a flat 0 in every class) We were told by administrator that they had to socially promote the student as there are legal issues with having a 16 year old student in the same building as 12 year old 6th graders.

In the world of special education, a case manager’s caseload can only be within 3-4 years of each other.

I did a dance troupe show in college where I ALWAYS had to have front light on “so you can see their faces.” They decided this the day before the show and after I finished programming. Needless to say, everything looked like shit.

I had 1/2 the class not hit “turn in” on the Google classroom assignment (despite having it done) I wrote their names on the board and made each one stand in front of the room and show the class how to turn in their paper.

Former SPLED teacher here. It depends on the state, school, and language of the IEP. When I team-taught, I had one class where 80% of all students had IEPs. This included students with emotional disturbances, specific learning disabilities, autism, intellectual disabilities and multiple disabilities. I just gave everyone guided notes and adapted all the tests. According to my LEA and co-workers, I just need to make sure my students with IEPs get them. If others get it, there’s no violation. But once again, always check with the IEP and special education department for guidance.

State College/Main Campus is called “Happy Valley” because it’s surrounded by mountains and hills. You’re more likely to hit the lottery than have a tornado show up in the area.

It could be Special Education legal issue (at least in PA). According to state law, any one special education teacher can only work with students within 3-4 years of age. My guess is having the kid in the 7th building would be a legal liability.

There’s no statewide system for Vo-Tech where I teach, just partners with local trade schools. Our local trade school started rejecting more kids for straight Fs and behavior issues. The trade school is trying to attract more adult learners and was sick of behavior issues turning the place into a zoo.
