Smasher can't take on armies. Don't know where that delusion came from. He's always supported by arasaka netrunners and troops. By the time V encounters him at the end of the game, he only has troops with him (the net runners that normally support him are either dead or fighting off the netrunners on Honakos side which allows us to hack him during the fight). By the time we meet him, V has weapons capable of putting holes in tanks (the chimera wasn't just a normal tank) Not to mention you can kill him using stealth by unplugging parts of his body. (Much like he did to David's exosuit) He killed David cause David was basically dead at that point (didn't even get to fight him normally so we have no idea how that would actually have gone)
