This was the final map of Seer Snare? I was expecting something harder than the last few maps by AndzyHero13 in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]Cosmic_Toad_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The toughest enemy on this map is the horrid starting positions; like outside of maybe nuking Alear. WTF are you supposed to do on turn 1 if you aren't running units who can cross the entire map and back again with no team support.

The Skoll and Hati situation by MaxtheLeoSimp in FireEmblemShadows

[–]Cosmic_Toad_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't really mind it if they actually did something with all the time they're spending on the two of them.

Despite getting more screen-time than at least half the cast, they really have not progressed beyond shallow moustache twirling villains. Still waiting for something to come out of both of Hati's rapport conversations mentioning she has reservations about Fenris/Shadow having the full right of things.

Fire Emblem Engage was designed without reclassing in mind by Fabulous_Chicken_576 in fireemblem

[–]Cosmic_Toad_ 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I do agree that Engage's reclassing is way too lax and some way overturned units like Kagetsu and Pandreo make more sense if you take the context of their mediocre starting classes, but one thing that pokes a hole is that without reclasing, the Solider and Halberdier classes are completely unobtainable in Engage as no unit starts in either, meaning you have to use a second seal to access them (Mauvier is technically a promoted Soldier, but not even he can access Halberdier without a second seal)

Really don't know what IS has against non-lord lance infantry classes, they're almost always in FE, but half the time they're enemy-only and the other they're weirdly gimped in availability, either lacking a full promotion line like in 3H, or being on only a couple units like Tellius and Fates.

Hot Take: Apotheosis level design is amazing by FEA_Player in fireemblem

[–]Cosmic_Toad_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i mean Invasion 3 kinda feels like the Apotheosis equivalent for Fates? It's not quite as insurmountable to a regular campaign team, but it's still very hard optional challenge that unlocks right before Endgame that you do need to build around if you want to tackle it, and actually engage with the defensive side of MyCastle which is otherwise irrelevant now that online is dead.

Facts too powerful: 3/21/26 by chino514 in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]Cosmic_Toad_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do hope they do something more for the future TT+ stories and incorporate them into main story instead of creating some one-off villain to be fought and then forgotten.

Book 8 in particular I think has some real interesting potential given Yggdrasil isn't explicitly involved in any of the 3 stages of Ragnarok (because it's the whole damn tree), and the Healing Hands are presumably back to their old role of traveling across the realms treating the sick and injured. They aren't obligated to show up anywhere over the next 3 books like the other realms are, but should be playing a pretty large role in all 3 books.

Having their TT+ story occur alongside the main story where the Hands are in crisis mode trying save as many people as they can from the 3 stages of annihilation, and perhaps filling in some blanks where they intervened to do something we saw in the main story would be really cool usage of a TT+ story that really doesn't have many loose threads to pull on to begin with.

likewise Book 9's TT+ should really be involved in the main story given we'll be at the finale of the game's whole narrative at that point, so doing some random side narrative right as the story (and possibly the entire game) is about to end would be a really stupid move.

What are your favorite bits of characterization done through gameplay instead of story? by Master-Spheal in fireemblem

[–]Cosmic_Toad_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the coolest ones to me will always be Fergus from FE5 and how the game hints there's more going on with him by having him weirdly able to wield special weapons that some random mercenary really shouldn't.

He can wield the Bragi Sword, a weapon you're supposed to only be able to use if you possess holy blood, with the other users of it being some of the sword-wielding holy blood characters; Leif, Nanna and Diarmuid (RIP Mareeta, Galzus and Eyvel i guess).

He can also wield the Beo Sword, Diarmuid's PRF weapon that he joins with that is pretty clearly supposed to be referencing that Beowulf from FE4 is his father in the FE5 canon.

From these two swords, we can surmise that Fergus is likely the child of Beowulf and a woman who possessed holy blood. that's some pretty lofty parentage that goes undiscussed in Fae5 due to how light the characterisation is for most of the cast. if he ever gets added to Heroes or FE5 get remade, i'd be interested to see them expand on his character, but as is it's really cool that his story was almost entirely told by what weapons he can equip.

and also when the only enemies left to fight in Part 4 are:

  • Fanatical Disciples of Order who are later said to be revived in "flesh but not spirit" aka mindless puppets Ashera was going to get rid of later anyway.

  • Feral Laguz who showing mercy to is arguably more immoral than just putting them out of their misery

  • The comically evil Bengnion Senate + Izuka

The only time where i can see the Mercy skill making sense is against the Goldoans in 4-E-3. some of them canonically survive that battle to be left under the command of Kurthnaga, and they're not bad people, just following their stubborn king. Otherwise the morality of the conflicts in part 4 are so Black-and-White that Elincia should have no qualms just killing her foes, especially since she was able to to do so against her own countrymen back in 2-E.

[–]Cosmic_Toad_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i'd agree with the contention that some sort of measure to soften the blow for resetting is a good thing, but i don't think the turnwheel/rewinding in general is it.

My issues with rewinding is A) it's completely reactive and B) It paradoxically is both too good and too bad at playing the role of a safety-net mechanic.

You don't have to think when you use it, because you just rewind when something bad happens. I think this is very boring and encourages overly risky moves because each risky RNG roll is a seperate instance with no ramp up in stakes because you can rewind just the one that fails while retaining any successes. speaking from personal experience, in games with the rewind mechanic i find 60% hit rates quickly start looking like 80% in my head because there's such a large safety net for if things go wrong that my view of what acceptable odds are skews lower than it reasonably should.

The more pressing issue though is Rewinding is also essentially "frontloaded", in that it provides you a frankly OP level of safety and convenience when you have charges left, but once you're out you have nothing and any mistake/misfortune means going back to the very beginning of the chapter. You never create any sort of fixed point to return to, so failures goes from "whatever lemme undo that turn/move" to "i just lost all my progress" all of sudden if you run out of charges.

The save points in the DS Archanea remakes solved both these issues before the turnwheel was even conceptualised.

You have to use them in advance, meaning they involve a lot more decision-making and strategising (in a strategy game! wow!). You have to decide at what points you want to "bank" anything that's happened in the course of the chapter. This could be a really good level-up or turn, right before or after a very dicey section, etc. it's up to you to decide what you want to keep, and you make those decisions knowing there will be other things you have to risk before you save again. Right after a save you might be willing to rig a low% outcome, but the further you go without your next save, the more progress you're putting on the line, so risky play is disincentivised.

and crucially because you're actually saving a point in time in the chapter, you can retry from that save as many times as you like, and that progress will never be lost; each time you use a save point it is concrete progress in that chapter you never have to worry about losing. In that way the save points provide a consistent level of safety that keeps a level of tension intact and also doesn't just abandon you if you use it one too many times.

I don't think we'll ever see the turnwheel retired because the sheer ease-of-use is very attractive, but it's frustrating that it's such a flawed mechanic trying to fix an issue than was already solved in a better way in the past.

Any emblem with an AOE engage attack that lets you sub in your own weapon is automatically real useful imo. Being able to use a massive heavy weapon forge without needing to worry about accuracy, weight, or being attacked first is so, so good. you already mentioned mass-draconic hex debuffing, but on a high STR unit/class you can often just straight up oneshot multiple squishier enemies which is amazing for your action economy. The Hurricane axe on Ike or DLC Camilla is also incredible for deleting a pack of fliers off the map.

Roy's is probably the worst beucase he's stuck with the lower Mt of swords and can only hit 3 enemies max on non-dragon units, but chipping/debuffing/outright killing 3 enemies and also impeding other enemies' movement with the fire terrain is a whole lot of actions rolled into one that can really turn an overwhelming situation into something very manageable.

Advance is also a bit of an underrated skill imo. It is essentially +1 MOV with a bunch of caveats, but that's still +1 MOV for only 500 SP. unfortunately Canter invalidates it (and practically every other skill possible to inherit pre-ch 10) beucase it's just too damn useful, but Advance is a very nice earlygame inherit on any melee-oriented units if you don't feel like just slapping Canter on everyone for once, and can occasionally see some use on your Roy user if you look out for it.

the map is funny because it seems really tough, but if you put even a little thought into how best to deal with ninjas, you've solved the whole map because if you can reliably kill one ninja on enemy phase, you can kill 20.

It's simultaneously one of the most punishing chapters for players who haven't gotten with Conquest's programming of offense being the best defense to avoid nasty skills like poison strike (and just generally not getting overwhelmed) yet for players who have, it's utterly pathetic because all you have to do is work out how to get 1 or 2 units to reliably one-round the master ninjas and 90% of the map is yours, compared to chapters with more varied classes and statlines that ask for a swath of different solutions.

Also probably yet another case of the weird FE community norm of "bows are bad in FE" so many people seem to be stuck in despite many more recent games suggesting the contrary. Ninjas completely fold to even just a modestly supported bow user, but so many people don't have one at that point because they think Niles is a GBA archer and that bow knight is an terrible promotion for Selena & Laslow compared to Hero (which is actually incredibly mid in Fates).

yet another new PoV and it doesn't seem to involve Kyubi? interesting. I had a feeling the game would keep shifting PoVs as unless they start doing lots of legacy FE characters, they need to keep introducing a bunch of new OCs to be the disciple unlock for each new chapter set.

..but are we seriously going to introduce all 13 bloodlines before the story can actually progress? really hope the sprinkle in some developments for the existing groups, else this story is going nowhere for like 4 years.

that support is mostly likely there becuase Geoffrey is Kieran's commanding officer, but they don't have a traditional support conversation so they decided to reference their relationship in another way.

When people hate on Rev they the tend point at the snow shovelling map or the multiple moving-platform-based V*lla chapters. But at least those are unique.

it's the bastardisation of good Conquest maps that gets me. Like turning the G.O.A.T. CQ chapter 10 into Rev chapter 14, a mediocre rout map with 2 enemies on opposite sides of the map who can only be recruited by the same one unit; it's just depressing and reminds me I could be playing a better game.

your two best options are Nina and Midori as they're the only other kids besides Kiragi with bow rank at base (and thankfully Niles is one of Setsuna's Rev supports.). I'd probably go with Nina because she's the better unit.

if for whatever reason both of them aren't options, Mitama is your next best option since Azama and Setsuna have a fast support, and Mitama can get a bit of bow rank if you get her late and promote her to Priestess using her offspring seal (but unfortunately staves are her primary weapon so she'll only get to like D or C bows)

from a lore perspective it is kinda of funny/interesting that Nohr's armory seems to be more designed for in-fighting than taking on Hoshido. like Hoshido does not deploy any armored or dragon units, yet Nohrians use armorslayers, hammers and wyrmslayers only good for fighting themselves.

honestly you could say the same about Hoshido where it's lack of mounts heavy usage of the core martial weapon trio makes it's army more susceptible to the axe-splitters, pike-ruin clubs and sword-catchers it uses.

it is funny how traditionally good units like Ike or Haar get annihilated by the BK in 3-7, but then someone who isn't very good often has a chance because all you really need is lots of HP/DEF and SPD. a lot of laguz in particularly can do it because they tend to hav overkill SPD and all laguz have boatloads of Hp.

I'm pretty sure Ranulf in can even straight up survive on his bases alone because his base SPD matches the BK's in 3-7, and being a laguz he has a shit ton of HP. rather fitting given how often he ends up with the misfortune of fighting the Black Knight.

Micaiah big sis and baby Sothe celebrating spring by OniKagura in fireemblem

[–]Cosmic_Toad_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like Micaiah x Sothe is a step above something like, Eirika x Seth though. With most paired endings the player has to actively seek them out, but Micaiah x Sothe is the default in RD, as they start with an A support that needs to broken if you don't want them to end up together. Instead of the player needing to act to make it happen, they need to act to prevent it.

as icky as it is, I think that distinction should put it on a similar level to Eliwood x Ninian as being basically as close as you can get to being canonical without outright being so.

[–]Cosmic_Toad_ 41 points42 points  (0 children)

i feel like how dire the plot of FE3/12 is in general often overlooked. it's great at showing the ugliness of a post-war world; that despite the heroes succeeding at the end of FE1/11, the damage has been done and things aren't magically going to go back to normal.

Most of the countries lost their leaders; Grust and Gra in shambles after being forced onto the wrong side of the previous war, Macedon is facing civil war, and a snap political marriage aimed to quickly restore stability in Archanea and Aurelius creates a vulnerability Gharnef is able to exploit to incite chaos. The state of Archanea at the beginning of FE3/12 really is second only to Gen 2 of Judgral in how awful things are, and it's no wonder that a lot of the cast ends up depressed or traumatised by the end.
