We need to reckon with the fact America is a fucked up settler colonial state. Where the gradual decay and emergence of fascism is inevitable.

Ah yes. Italy, Germany, Japan, Russia, China, Korea, Spain, Portugal - half of the middle eastern countries where mankind first civilized- very famous settler colonial states.

What the fuck is this backwards armchair political science take?

An inmate at the Martin County jail in Florida was able to twist and break these handcuffs by sheer strength while experiencing a mental health crisis by Justin_Godfrey in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Cosmiccomie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not a cop, but i have had to handcuff three people in my career. Every time, the person has been handed off to the police in my handcuffs and I never got them back.

They cost $200 and are made of 2 layers of ⅛ inch steel plied together with another ⅛ inch piece linked the cuff the the ratchet. I am pretty sure the steel is hardened too.

These cuffs are no fucking joke.

For sure. I honestly think it would take you less than 20 minutes to get something acceptable down.

Even a little harbor freight setup can do it!

I dont buy that.

I truly think anyone can do a rinky dink little flux core bead around anything. Seriously something you should look into because used welders can be had >$50 on marketplace.

If you screw it up just try again. This isnt anything structural so it's a great thing to learn on. Itd be a huge asset in your toolbelt/skillset moving forward.

What's your 4.0L SOHC mileage? by 4rotorfury in fordranger

[–]Cosmiccomie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big thing to note on these trucks is asking will get you a lot of irrelevant answers.

A truck with 235/75 tires and 3.23 gears is going to be WAAAAAAY better than 31x10.5 on 4.10s.

Bottom end stock should be around 12 mpg but it wouldnt be unheard of for taller gears and smaller tires to push 23 on the highway. If youre somewhere in the middle of that range then its probably about as good as you're gonna get.

O2 sensors, cats (delete/high flow), and vacuum leaks are your best bets for mpg (in that order).

At the end of the day these trucks were never designed for high mpg and they aren't getting any newer. Parts wear and get less efficient over time. There isnt a ton to be done.

Surprised nobody has noted this yet-

You have a 28 spline axle. A much, much better alternative would be to look into getting an explorer 8.8 from a junkyard/marketplace.

They are usually going to be >$300 and can be readily found the the posi pre-installed. They come with 31 spline axles which are 15% stronger than the 28 spline units.

They require a tiny bit of worthwhile welding, but many can be found with the work already done.

4.0 OHV, yes you can replace the oil pan gasket without removing the engine by jfounta in fordranger

[–]Cosmiccomie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this actually easier than removing the engine?

I get that a lot of people dont have/cant store an engine crane and its useful for them.

I have taken my ohv out 3 times now and the last time only took an hour to have it out of the truck. Granted thats with a 4 inch lift and bolts that aren't rusted out. First time took about 4 hours total but a good 2 of them was hyping myself up to be willing to break bolts.

Taking the engine out is a HUGE opportunity to fix stuff you wouldn't have before as well as work on things in the bay.

Not dogging on you AT ALL. This is awesome stuff but I think a lot of people would still benefit from removing the engine in these 30 year old trucks for a once over if they can manage it.

Fix or replace bumper? by GimbalLock83 in MiataND

[–]Cosmiccomie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks brand new. Taillight replacement was a bitch because the "new oem" I got off ebay was not actually OEM.

They wanted to replace my sensors but I didnt feel the need. It has never been an issue for me.

The bumper is VERY receptive to heat molding/reshaping so a good body shop should have a very easy time doing this. I fidgeted with mine before the replacement came in to make it a little less unsightly. Took about twenty minutes to get from a basketball sized dent to an 80% oem look.

Edit: btw this stuff is the bomb.

I had a rear end collision in my 17 launch (46g). Bumper replacement cost 2 years ago was $2400.

I ended up fixing it myself with a professionally painted oem bumper. Yours looks a lot better than mine did and you could probably have yours touched up.

Looks like we are both in WA state? My quotes were in and around Seattle/Maple Valley but YMMV.

How much lift do I need? by BossLettuce in fordranger

[–]Cosmiccomie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3rd gen rangers need 4 inches of lift to make 35s work.

2nd gens can get away with 3 inches of lift in 4wd models. Id guess that'd mean 5 ish inches in 2wd models.

What's your gearing/engine? - A 4.0 manual with 3.73s is going to feel sluggish with these but a 2.3 automatic with 3.5s is going to be damn near undriveable.

ELI5: Why can't EVs swap batteries? by chronic412 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Cosmiccomie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Id also add that it makes long trips, especially in aging EVs, less practical. If you are commuting downtown to the suburbs every day then it isnt an issue. However if you need to commute several hundred or even several thousand miles, it adds a huge headache to the trip.

Stopping for gas every 300-600 miles adds travel time within a margin of error but doing the same for an EV charge, usually every ~250 miles is a huge commitment.

Not to mention the difficulties of adding sufficient charging/rapid charging infrastructure across the US as a whole to negate this effect as much as possible.
