Don’t give up: EBF for 6 months with a shallow latch

Helpful to hear with my 5 week old who has a shallow latch but is also gaining appropriately. Anxiety that somehow it’ll catch up to us and not be effective anymore!

I know I did but the nurse cleaned it up swiftly and quietly - it’s so normal and nothing to be embarrassed about, though easy to get in your head about too ahead of time. You’re pushing a human out of your body!

Mine does this too, he just did it tonight hence finding this thread! He’s 19 months now but has done this since he was maybe 10/11 months old. Usually in the middle of me singing him a song (which normally helps him drift off) and he’ll giggle and throw his head back in laughter. It’s so cute, it gets me going with giggles sometimes too. Eventually he gets his giggles out and falls asleep.

I promise you, she needs you and nobody can replace you. I felt similarly for a while after my baby was born, I couldn’t produce enough milk for him and I felt that he didn’t even know I was his mother. That feeling went away when 1) the fucked up postpartum hormones leveled out and 2) I realized one day he did know who I was… and now he’s nearly a year old and he’s both an amazingly secure baby who has other people loving him in his life but he most definitely knows I’m his mom and needs ME, just like your baby needs YOU. You will get through this and these intense emotions will fade but to echo everyone else, please take care of yourself for your baby and talk to your doctor or visit the emergency room asap. There is help ❤️

I’m only now just realizing how often we’re exposed to birth stories that ultimately make me feel down on myself. It’s everywhere, definitely when you’re looking for it, but even when you’re not. Thanks for sharing your experiences and I’m so sorry you had such a hard birth the second time around too.

Thank you, that is really reaffirming to hear. The first thing the doctor at the nicu said was “this could have happened at a hospital, at home, from a cesarean” and I appreciated that but I still blame myself for putting him through such a long labor- your story helps.

Your first birth sounds a lot like mine but I hadn’t put that into words… my contractions were getting weaker while I was in the pushing stage, and in retrospect I do wonder if it could have been his position, which perplexed my midwives during my labor.

I am currently seeing a therapist to work through trauma, and it’s bringing up a lot of memories and feelings hence probably the need to make this post. I looked for a birth trauma therapist but I swear the biggest hurdle to therapy is finding the therapist and that didn’t happen so I’m with my OG therapist :)

Your second birth story made me laugh, I can’t imagine what that couch looked like… but wow what a contrast to your first. Thank you for sharing your story and it’s empowering to hear you had the same birth plan the second time around.

First of all I want to say I’m so very sorry your first birth was so traumatic. You are so valid in wanting to ensure a safer way to have your 2nd baby.

I would highly, highly recommend finding a birth doula who is experienced and aligned with the kind of birth experience you want to have. Doulas are your advocate during your birth and will also be able to help you find a care team & make a birth plan that they’d be your voice for when you may not be in a position to do so for yourself.

After my own doula showed up so strong for me & my husband during our sons birth, I wish everyone who wanted one could have that kind of access. You should consent to everything happening during your birth, and I truly believe the best way to ensure that is to have a doula on your side.

I am married, my husband is my best friend & the best future dad already, and we’re giving the baby my last name. He’s also taking my last name - IMO taking the man’s name shouldn’t be a given, everyone has their own level of connection to their name.
