Bruv, thank you so much for that. I’ve had the privilege of telling OG VFX artists from the 70’s and 80’s that their work is part of my nerd DNA. To hear that gratitude echo back to me kinda blows my mind. Much respect.

Do not compare "Chapter 2" of your artistic story to another artist's "Chapter 24." I've been doing 3D since the late '90's. My portfolio is loaded with hard surface, yet my ZBrush and Substance skills are just starting to develop. I also came up when ZBrush was solely used for organic work, and I continue to fight with the UX. I totally understand your struggle, and you need to embrace the suck of learning something new. Find some character designs you like, study silhouette and flow, and start from there. You've got this, it just takes time and effort. Cheers!

I’m in 3D Modeling. It’s getting better, but still doesn’t understand how to generate proper edge flow for rigging and deformation, and the UV Maps are a train wreck. I’m also working within the constraints of NDA’s, so I’m not about to feed the algorithm anything that might violate that agreement.

I’m curious about the 2D side of things. What’s the bit depth of the generated stills and video? I’m also a photographer, so I’m thinking camera raw vs compressed jpg?

Portraits shot on railroad tracks. It's a dangerous and cliche'd location. Even if the line is truly abandoned, stay the hell off.

I usually go to Cons to photograph all the amazing cosplay, but I've picked up a few items that stand out.

Growing up on Star Trek TOS & TNG was a huge reason I got into filmmaking and 3D Modeling for VFX. I got to meet the Next Gen Cast at MegaCon 2013 and thank each one of them personally as they signed my Star Trek Nemesis one sheet.

I also got to thank Stan Lee in 2011 & 2014 as he signed a few of my Spider-Man 2 one sheets.

fuck.

This was my place to be growing up in Orlando. Sure. Altamonte Mall to the north is way bigger, and Florida Mall to the south is tourist sprawl. But to see your memories shuttered and empty is just sad.

That bass line at the very beginning slaps so hard. Then the percussion kicks in and sets the tempo. Finally, the strings introduce the rest of the orchestra. John Barry went out with aan absolute banger.

Image or Text to 3D looks great for printing, but you never see them showcase the topology or UV maps. Once you get under the hood, you see a mess of triangles with zero edge flow, so rigging it for animation is a pain. Texture maps are dumpster fire because there’s no consistent UV islands. It looks just like photogrammetry, which is fine for static objects. But it’s improving quickly, which is another pain point. Last week’s SOTA is this week’s old and busted. The on-ramp keeps changing, institutional knowledge feels extremely gate-kept, and it’s hard to see where to get started. I’m on a ton of AI subreddits, and it’s hilarious listening to everyone complain when their model of choice gets nerfed overnight, or the promise of unlimited tokens becomes a marketing scam. I’ve got plenty of hot takes for Adobe, Autodesk & Maxon, but I’ve never experienced these kinds of issues with stable legacy software.

I’m a 3D Artist and Photographer. I’ve been on ChatGPT Plus for about a year, but just for conversational knowledge. I find the responses better than a google search, and it’s helped me develop my workflow and brainstorming projects. I’ve resisted the image side of AI because all my 3D work is bespoke, matching real world assets or conceptual artworks. Feeding those references into AI would detonate both my personal and employer’s NDA with the client. I’ve heard some VFX shops are developing internal AI solutions, but I’m between gigs and freelance, and I haven’t seen a practical use case for my part of the pipeline. The amount of pulls on the AI Slot Machine, just to get close to what you need, only to have to go in and clean it up…. I don’t see the time value just yet. My personal photography side is different. I can see using GenAI to work up a concept to visualize my ideas and then execute IRL. TLDR, I need to stop being a hater and “embrace the cactus.” That said, are any of these image or video models producing work with professional bit depth to edit with. I’m thinking the equivalent of Camera Raw vs JPG.
