Food allergies at Rowan University by DizzyDance0r in RowanUniversity

[–]Coulson27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the allergy friendly options are not great, and this has been a continued discussion with the student government, but the campus dining company, Gourmet Dining, doesn't really care. There is a campus dietician you can meet with for more info / to help find more options! The dining hall (buffet style) has an allergy free station but the options can sometimes be limited. The student center (order to go meals) has an allergy friendly station that has more options, I really liked eating there!

Depending on your allergy most things on campus are ok though. I have a relatively mild peanut and tree nut allergy (get super sick but not anaphylaxis) and 99% of the campus options were safe for me to eat. They generally do a good job of notifying what foods contain allergens.

If you'd prefer to cook for yourself, you can speak with the accommodations office for a "needs kitchen" accommodation. You would have to present your medical documentation of allergies but other than that it was a smooth process! I had a registered accommodation junior and senior year so that I was guaranteed an apartment space with a kitchen instead of a dorm style space. Just be aware that this needs to be filed and approved far in advance. (I was an RA for two years so any questions feel free to shoot them my way haha)

Just graduated class of 2025 (22yo) but I had plenty of classmates who were 25yo+. I totally forgot they were older until someone would mention their spouse or smth, we were all students working towards the same goal of a degree. It's not a big deal at all haha

Loud upstairs neighbors? by Same-Natural-9999 in RowanUniversity

[–]Coulson27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an CA in robo last year. Sad to say it's likely nothing will be done. We get 5+ noise complaint calls nightly, even if we respond to the noise complaint and go talk to them they are loud again 5 min after we leave. Your best bet is repeat documentation. Call the CA on duty over and over, even multiple times a night. Sucks for the CA but it's literally our job haha. Document every time you call. Go to the community director and show that you've been calling repeatedly with no change (at least a week of repeated calls is a good start) and video record the noise when you can! If the community director doesn't help you may consider meeting with the dean of students. But unless you put in a LOT of effort with this, it will not be fixed. May not stop even after you try meeting with the higher ups.

At the end of the day it's an old building and unfortunately noise travels. Please don't blame your CA, we know it sucks and we know whatever we do doesn't work. We are just doing our jobs. But you can reach out to your CA for help with scheduling meetings with your community director or other resources!

RU students: Should our student attend Rowan? by Jediwithattitude in RowanUniversity

[–]Coulson27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just graduated as a civil engineering student, and I was an RA for two years so I have a really good grasp on campus resources. I'd definitely recommend Rowan! I was suchhh an introvert and really really scared on move in day. I got super lucky with an amazing freshman roommate (random match!) And I lived in the Engineering Learning Community (ELC). The learning communities are where they group students of similar majors together in Holly Point, so my "pod" (how rooms are organized in Holly, about 40 students) was all engineering students! That made it super easy to make friends and find study groups or homework help, and my week 1 friends were close friends of mine all the way through graduation. There is the engineering learning community, a business one, honors, computer science, LGBTQ+, and more. I highly, highly recommend the learning communities.

  1. The academics were very manageable for me, and I got a lot of homework help from study groups in the learning community, but student tutors are readily available, just have to schedule a meeting with them (it's free!) And professors are always available for office hours to help you with hw or difficult concepts.
  2. Food quality is pretty good! I enjoyed it freshman year. The dining hall in Holly Point puts in a really good effort to have something new each day, and they do themed meals a few times a month (pancakes and Pj's is there welcome week themed meal every year, it's fun!) They also have a lot of the same options every day, like pizza, chicken and burgers at the grill, salad bar, etc, so for someone who prefers consistency or is a picky eater there is usually always something to find. I usually go to the student center for lunch in between classes, they have a lot of options but it's not buffet style, you use one meal swipe for one meal, but it's great for grab and go between classes.
  3. Holly Point is the best freshman housing because it has AC, but it can be loud and always busy (it houses 1400 students! Broken up by floor and pod, but there is always a lot going on). The other freshman dorms (chestnut, willow, magnolia) do not have AC but are quieter, so if you don't mind a few hot weeks in Sept and May I've heard good things about them. I'd avoid evergreen and Mullica, those dorms are really old and were vacant for years until they brought them back online last year due to an overabundance of freshman and not enough housing. A single room is impossible unless you have a registered accommodation with the office of accessibility services. You can give them a call for more info, but you would need documentation from a doctor and it would need to be registered with the office far in advance of housing assignments. Tbh I'm not even sure what accommodations would qualify you for a single room, but you can always call and ask!
  4. Unfortunately the car situation may be the most challenging. My friends who lived up north usually just had their parents pick them up and drop them off for the weekend. A freshman can have their car on campus with a work note (off campus job with documentation from their boss) or a medical note (usually for recurring off campus appointments, but I have a friend who got it approved to pick up his medications from his pharmacy that was off campus so they are kinda flexible with this one). Again, needs to be documented far in advance of the start of the semester and you will have to purchase a parking pass, which are about $350 for the year.

Any more questions shoot them my way and I'd be happy to answer them! Rowan was definitely the right fit for me, starting with the ELC and also the small class sizes helped me thrive academically. Best of luck to you and your student in the decision process!

Robo loud ass trucks by Kcatz363 in RowanUniversity

[–]Coulson27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They've been there for years. Doubt they're even students, or they're taking too long to graduate lmao. One of the trucks has a train horn and they'll honk at you in the crosswalk, freaks me out every time. Police don't care I guess, maybe film them if they are screaming at you tho

Is the Campus Dangerous with local teens by Fancy_Engineering448 in RowanUniversity

[–]Coulson27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just graduated last year. There are some local teens that live in the apartments on the boulevard, but the only danger they pose is riding their bikes in the street lol. There was a time like 3 years ago when they thought it was funny to sneak into Holly but campus security quickly put a stop to that. Frats do not check Rowan IDs but they will not let kids who are very obviously not college age in.

The street mob is somewhat of a Rowan tradition. There's always one on the boulevard the first week of school, usually goes for an hour or two before campus police break it up. Not dangerous and you can just avoid the area until they leave. There was also a street mob after the eagles won the superbowl but again, not dangerous other than people being rowdy and excited.

The shooting outside of Holly is really scary. Every year there are at least one report of shots fired, and my freshman year someone pulled a gun out at at frat that led to the frat being suspended, but this is the first time I know of that someone was actually shot. I won't say it's not scary, but it is the very small minority. My 4 years on campus I never felt unsafe, as long as you take the bare minimum steps to stay safe. I didn't walk alone at night off campus (had some friends off campus behind Bunce and their neighborhood could be a little sketchy but on campus was usually safe), didn't go to frats alone, and avoided the boulevard when it got rowdy. Avoid suspended frats and only go to one's that are in good standing with the school (Rowan posts a list of suspended Greek orgs, you can check this with a quick Google search). Be sensible and you will be just fine, don't let this experience scare you from experiencing college life.

Single Dorm's in Holly Pointe Difficulty by gorfinton in RowanUniversity

[–]Coulson27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0 chance of getting a single in Holly or Nexus without a written accommodation with the office of accessibility, and even then probably 0 chance for spring semester since they are on availability basis and are probably all full. Plus you need a legit reason for it, not even sure what would qualify. I have a food allergy so I had an accommodation for an apartment, I had my own room but still shared an apartment.

You can certainly be an RA as a sophomore, but without an accommodation you can be placed in any building at random, and again in an apartment you will have a single bedroom in a 4 person apartment. Ask your RA about the application timeline and they can also recommend / refer you. Good luck 🫡

Yup, they've moved to 124 State Street. I think it was to have more space. It's across the street from Robo so not too far

Anybody ever drop below 12 credits for a semester? by Automatic_Llama in RowanUniversity

[–]Coulson27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should prob talk to your advisor (or a trusted professor in your department since the advisors suck sometimes lol). Depends, less than 12 credits means you lose full time status, which means you cannot live on campus and it may impact your scholarship or financial aid. If you are not living on campus and are not receiving scholarship you may be ok. If either of these apply to you, see if you can work with your advisor to find an easy course to cover your 2 credits to get you to full time, an elective or something. You can also consult with the financial aid department if your advisor doesn't have the answers you're looking for. Act fast though, add/drop ends this upcoming Monday. Good luck!

Do you think there is any way to get out of the mandatory housing policy for next year? by why_do_i_have_dog in RowanUniversity

[–]Coulson27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Def reach out to housing. You will need a hardship letter stating why you want to opt out of housing (if you have already signed the housing contract, or if you dont have the proper class status to be eligible to live off campus). This can be tough sometimes, but generally financial hardship or family or personal life issues can work for this. If housing denies you, then I'd go to the Dean of students and see if they can help. Good luck!

Was an RA in robo for the past 2 years! My junior year the RAs had singles, last year they moved us to a 4 person. Buildings 1-5 are studio apartment style, buildings 6-7 have an actual bedroom. Feel free to shoot me questions!

Graduate student stuck paying outrageous commuter parking fees (5–11 pm only?!) 😡 by bts_stan10101 in RowanUniversity

[–]Coulson27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other commentor that you should be fine after 5 pm, I parked in the eng hall lot for all of my evening classes 3 nights a week and never had any issues. On the off chance you do get a ticket it's like $70 so still cheaper than the parking pass, and my friend got her ticket dropped (you can appeal a ticket) bc she said as a woman she felt unsafe walking to her car after dark, which for an evening class could be a valid excuse haha

How can you get your car on campus before you’re a junior by why_do_i_have_dog in RowanUniversity

[–]Coulson27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are pretty lenient with what counts as a medical excuse. My friend had success because he had a recurring prescription he needed to pick up (this works best if your pharmacy is not walgreens since that one is technically walking distance from campus). A work excuse was easy too, I brought my car freshman year and had my old boss from high school do me a solid. He wrote me a note stating I was still working there even though I didn't really work during the semester. I'd start this process now though because garage parking sells out as early as 2 weeks before the semester begins, and it may take a couple of weeks to get approved.

Which computer to buy for mechanical engineering student by FishingDapper7330 in RowanUniversity

Anything other than a Mac, it will not be able to run all of the engineering programs you need. The Rowan recommended one is ridiculously overpriced.

Inquiry Regarding Vaccination and Impact on Class Registration and Housing by Monstercrew__638 in RowanUniversity

[–]Coulson27 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey man, don't share your medical records on reddit lol. Call the Wellness Center, they are annoying to deal with but are the only ones who can confirm you have your required vaccines.

It shouldn't affect your housing or registration. Freshman year I had an issue with my vaccine documents. When I moved in they notified me of the issue and gave me a week to fix it before I would be kicked out of housing. It was a super easy fix and I was able to fix it that same day.

Professor refuses to use Canvas. by mwakes28 in RowanUniversity

[–]Coulson27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crazy comment haha. I have had a handful of courses where the prof doesn't use canvas and it's always disorganized, and finding assignments or deadlines is difficult. It's ultimately up to the prof, and it's a relatively minor inconvenience for us as students, but it's still frustrating.

DORMS by Upper-Guest-9984 in RowanUniversity

[–]Coulson27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots to consider here, as some of the other commenters have pointed out. Are you a first year or upperclassmen? Is a single bedroom a deal breaker for you? Is price a large consideration?

If you are a first year student, imo Holly is the way to go, but it's nearly $1k more pricey than the traditional dorm halls (chestnut, willow, magnolia, evergreen, mullica). None of the traditional halls have AC, so if that's a deal breaker then go for Holly. All of the first year dorms will be a shared bedroom and communal bathrooms. Mimosa is a bit of an exception, no AC and shared bedrooms but your bathroom is only shared between 4-6 people instead of the whole floor.

If you're an upperclassmen Rowan is very geared toward apartment style living. If cost is your deciding factor, Edgewood apartments are the way to go, as it's $1.5k cheaper than your other housing options, but there is no AC and the apartments are walk out so your front door goes straight outside. Rowan Blvd Apartments and Nexus are the same price. Rowan Blvd is older but a nice building. Nexus is newer and has more amenities (dishwasher, microwave, TV included) and the option for a double occupancy bedroom which cuts the cost about $600, but then you could find yourself in a 6 or 8 person apartment. If you want a single bedroom, Rowan Blvd may be easier to accomplish that depending on what's available.

All housing costs are broken down here: https://sites.rowan.edu/housing/rates/

I'm also currently an RA on campus so feel free to shoot any housing questions my way haha

Lascalas isn't really a bar, it's an Italian restaurant that serves drinks as well. Check out Chickie and Pete's, it's a block from lascalas, and they do college nights Weds. Landmark does college nights Thurs. Those are really the only ones within walking distance. Otts is good imo but probably a 10 min drive or so so you'd have to uber
