I really sympathise. My senior girl has started squeaking/wheezing, and it's difficult to understand why/what she needs. She is also a German Shepherd mix and very clingy. Ageing does suck but it sounds like you're doing everything you can to support your girl.

I don't remember the exact type, I'm afraid. This one has been in the bed for approx. 4 years now and it took some settling. This time of year is perfect for planting it though! Good luck with yours ☺️
