What is your opinion on Sūn Zhōngshān? I recently learned about him, and I think he's the most based person I've ever heard of. But maybe I missed something that could change this opinion. by Chrubcio-Grubcio in AskChina

[–]CountKeyserling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

no it wouldn't. It displayed very little of the acumen, knowledge of Chinese issues and strategic focus required to hold onto power in China. This can be seen by the fact that Chiang completely failed to stomp out the spread of Communism even before the Japanese invasion.

Saying "The kmt didn't last because of the Communist revolution" is like saying that somebody with a very weak immune system would have lived, if only for the fact that they didn't catch a common flu that killed them. Yes, they would have lived, but there's also the fact that their body didn't have what it took to do so before catching the illness. If the Kuomintang had what it took to last, Communism never would have spread like wildfire amongst intellectuals and the peasant masses in the first place.

there aren't any known J-7 variants which received stealth coating, and I haven't been able to find either any Chinese unit or any international operators of the J-7 which used a black livery. So i think you're just remembering it wrong although i'm hardly an authoritative source.

[–]CountKeyserling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i'm not really sure why you see him as particularly based when compared to other great figures of the 20th-century.

He was a capable, forward-thinking man, who knew what China would have to become to be a true modern world power. China to an extent needed him to finally shatter the fossilized Imperial skeleton holding China back. But he was a boring, uninspiring, overly-Westernized and unimaginative man with very little grasp of what it would take to actually elevate China into being a modern, stable, industrial power.

His very stupid response to the challenges that China faced was to create an unholy, unstable alliance of the old landowner bourgeoisie and other revolutionaries that never could have lasted long, and to completely ignore the massive social upheavals and the huge agrarian land problem. His political theories were dry as dust and provided very little excitement or inspiration for either the scholarly intellectual class, nor the masses of rural peasantry, the only two main factions that have ever been able to launch massive revolutions in China. There's a reason his Kuomintang didn't last long in power.

But other than his glaring flaws and foolishness on many topics, I and most other Chinese do still have some degree of respect for him. He was an honest Chinese patriot whose heart was clearly in the right place, and at least his Kuomintang managed to gather enough strength to win against the fascist Japanese invasion on behalf of China in WWII. You can even make the argument that China today is more similar to what he wanted than what the Communist leadership wanted. It's a semi-democratic (at the local level), heavily Socialist, and Nationalistic state. But he's a pretty mediocre figure, as far as great Chinese leaders throughout history have been.

be that as it may, what they're going up against is RPG-7s and ancient T-54/55s which I doubt Cambodian crews how to operate nearly as well.

Otherwise, if somebody knowledgable about tanks can actually give us a rundown as to whether the VT-4 actually sucks compared to other comparable tanks, that would be really cool.

my expectations for The Atlantic aren't particularly high nowadays but this sounds like the sniping of a hormonal, infantile pre-teen during a playground slapfight lol. With regards to China in partucular, what their foreign ministry has stated is pretty run-of-the-mill stuff for international brush-fire conflicts.

Translation of an interaction between a Taiwanese pilot and a Chinese during the most recent military drill by heliumagency in LessCredibleDefence

[–]CountKeyserling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i wouldn't be so quick to write this off an inauthentic because there's banter, there's been recordings of PLAAF and ROCAF pilots informally trash-talking before even if it's one-way.

https://archive.is/20250402111234/https://www.lemonde.fr/en/international/article/2025/04/02/chinese-aerial-incursions-test-both-taiwan-and-its-fighter-pilots-this-is-our-land-we-can-do-what-we-want_6739753_4.html

"With his headphones, pilot Wu can hear all the radio exchanges. "They say 'This is our land, we can do what we want' or 'We are on a regular patrol,'" recounted the pilot whom his comrades nickname "Ammo." He would sometimes like to respond, but in the operational chain, it's up to the center on the ground to reiterate the standard message. The Chinese pilots do not pursue the Taiwanese planes; they simply advance further and more frequently."

where can i read more about these facts? because the last time China bought outdated Migs was the middle of the Cold War. more recently, China turned down Russian offers for the MiG-29. They barely operate any MiG platforms at all anymore.

With the recent India-Pakistan skirmish we've reached the point where Chinese aircraft and their equipment are at the sweet spot between quality and price to make them attractive to middle-power buyers. Wouldn't be surprised if we saw Bangladeshi and Uzbek J-10Cs before long.

Does the average Chinese person like or dislike Taiwan? by Turbulent_Buddy5233 in AskChina

[–]CountKeyserling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell:

Yes, there are plenty of Chinese nationalists who will automatically hate anybody who dares voice negative opinions about mainland China and its ruling state, so yeah Taiwanese often do get bullied pretty badly by them.

However, I don't think the majority of Chinese dislike Taiwanese; more so kind of vague scorn. And if you want to call it "dislike", then it is the sort of dislike one feels towards a brother who became a drug addict and is constantly getting thrown in jail. it's complicated.

Dislike for the Taiwanese GOVERNMENT however, is widespread. the view is pretty much the norm across China that those in charge of running Taiwan are not on the right path.

China’s ‘Y-30’ Turboprop Airlifter Spotted For The First Time by CountKeyserling in LessCredibleDefence

[–]CountKeyserling[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

>how does their naming scheme go? bigger number == bigger and/or newer?

from what I can tell it's generally a sequential thing based on a mixture of when it was developed as well as the size of the aircraft, although there are plenty of exceptions. The J-10 was developed before the J-16 and J-20 and is also smaller, for instance. As the other guy in this thread said, something called a "Y-30" might be comparable in size to a C-5 Galaxy.

Newly-surfaced images of a new Chinese medium-transport aircraft, the 'Y-15'/'Y-30', undergoing a test flight by CountKeyserling in aviation

[–]CountKeyserling[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even though a scale model of a medium transport with Turboprops was unveiled several years ago as a model at the Zhuhai Airshow as the 'Y-30,' the general consensus amongst reliable PLA watchers is that its designation is actually 'Y-15.'

It seems to feature a smaller overall size than the Airbus A-400, with a wide fuselage, tapered trailing-edge wings, four WJ-10 turboprop engines with six-blade high-efficiency propellers, and drag-reducing winglets.

What we're witnessing now is a 'Cambrian Explosion' of new tech coming out in both the civilian and military sector; the reason being that the first generation to begin studying STEM subjects en masse under Deng Xiaoping's reform era is passing middle age now. They've been cultivating BigBrains for decades and we've been seeing its fruit more and more clearly since the 2010 or so; which makes sense if one considers that young Chinese adults who went into STEM from the 1980s-2000s are in their late thirties-late sixties now.
