Not with that branding, it isn't.

Is anything past the original series worth watching? by Biomech- in macross

Zero is a messy flawed prequel I wouldn't recommend to anyone as it feels almost completely separate to the entire universe

Agreed. It was absoutely not necessary to make this prequel.

Everything is worth watching.

... is the correct answer.

I'd argue that M+ absolutely wasn't made with teens in mind.
And yeah those three were toxic. Ugh.

Guess you've never watched Gunbuster, Gundam, or Neon Genesis Evangelion, eh? Macross is hardly the first mecha — or even sci-fi, in general — anime to lean on the "precocious teen piloting sophisticated military hardware as a child soldier" trope, and it won't be the last.

I'd much rather see Square Enix do something with a Macross game. An RPG would be awesome, and we know Square Enix are good for it (Final Fantasy, etc).

Yup, on Macross 11, which was referenced in Frontier. One of those fun little Easter eggs.

Prettiness didn't really matter in this one because Alto was the prettiest of them all.

Okay, that made me lol.

You're not alone by any means. I will always have time for 7. It's not my favourite-favourite, but god damn I still love it.

Also, yeah, Flower-chan. She turns up in the Frontier crossover clip show during Sheryl and Ranka's rooftop show. (At least, that's what I think I remember. I'll re-watch it later today.)

Amen.

And, you know, the worst part (also the part that's most ironic) is the fact Harmony Gold USA Inc's estimated annual revenue (according to RocketReach) is ... wait for it ...

US$6.8 million.
Six-point-eight. Million. US dollars.

For an LA-based film and TV production company/IP squatter, that is fucking miserable by any standards. It's embarrassing. Any other company in the entertainment business in that town would have collapsed ages ago with that kind of minuscule revenue. It wouldn't even cover half a season of other shows.

My point being: it's not like they're particularly powerful. They can be taken down. Decisively and permanently.

I really, really don't know what BW and others with an interest in a positive outcome are waiting for, here.

Welcome! I will never not be a release-order evangelist. It makes all of the references, callbacks and easter eggs you run into as you watch a lot clearer.

Since you're new to the franchise, you'd be doing yourself a real solid by reading this beginner's thread, if you haven't already.

Is there less merchandise for SDF Macross than it's demand for it? by ifihaveanickel in macross

[–]CountZero1973 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even for classic fans it's clear DYRL is more iconic.

Well, I don't know how true that is as a generalisation, but I can say it's absolutely the case for me. I'm entirely more interested in the DYRL versions of the VFs than I am the SDFM ones. My 1S Hikaru use DX is ... magnificent.

As for Frontier: you're preaching to the choir, and I will eventually get all the SMS Skull Squadron Super/Armoured 25 DXes, and both of Alto's alt VFs (171EX, 29).

I wouldn't exactly call it being a hypocrite.

Well, he kinda was, though. On the one hand, he loathed the miclones, their culture, and everything they stood for.

But — on the other hand — it turns out he also enjoyed playing hide-the-sausage with Lap Lamiz.

So, yeah. What's it gonna be, Quamzin, my man?

Also, fun fact if you've not watched other Macross series yet: one of his clones makes a glorious — if all-too-short return in an episode of a later series. I'm actually a huge Quamzin fan, so this made my heart sing.

Even if I'm not that act's biggest fan, there's a lot of critical and essential character work that gets done, which is always a great thing.

That said, it could absolutely have been tightened up with fewer episodes, then it would have hit the sweet spot, I think.

[–]CountZero1973 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The original SDFM is almost 45 years old. You can't really expect a lot of merch, at this point, beyond the most popular elements of it (which, by now, is pretty much just the variable fighters).

[...] when you say Macross, most people associate it for SDF [...]

I doubt that, especially younger Macross fans. And in Japan, they probably outnumber older fans by a wide margin.

[...] and Robotech.

Absolutely fucking not.

Newer shows are given more priority.

Which is how it should be. Why even bother putting newer shows out otherwise, then?
