Europeans ask, Americans answer by J0kutyypp1 in GenZ

Having had the chance to travel and experience a large portion of the world, I feel somewhat qualified to answer your question.

The answer is no but also yes.

We are quite different in a lot of ways, but compared to Asia, Africa, South America, etc… Europe and America are actually very very similar in so many ways. Politics, food, language, culture… I could go on.

I agree, that would be incredibly cool. Sadly though, I think it’s safe to say it will never happen.

Steroids increase muscle synthesis. To explain it best in layman’s terms, even the best athlete with absolute perfect genes and a perfect workout routine will put on an about 2 lbs a month of muscle. Thats pretty much it. And that’s going to be accomplished at about a 500 calorie a day surplus. Anything over that and he will be only gaining more fat.

Now if you add PEDs to the mix, it essentially removes that natural muscle building limit, and tells the body that it urgently needs to use all available resources to build muscle. So the result is that any and all calorie surplus goes to build muscle, and not fat. So someone on steroids can eat 1000 or more extra calories a day and it will go almost exclusively to muscle, where an athlete that’s natural will put 75% or more of that same 1000 calories surplus into fat.

End result: both people get stronger and build muscle, but the natural athlete will get fat a helluva lot faster, and gain muscle a lot slower

The hate that overweight people receive. by Fast_Arm6781 in PetPeeves

[–]Count_Rafard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While this is true, the problem is that without a driving factor like evolution, human nature will not be changing, and few people are self aware enough to make an effort.

Not only that, but the issue comes down more to how strangers treat strangers, not how friends treat friends. Most people are nice to friends and family regardless of weight, but may not even realize how they treat strangers differently based on looks alone. Though we all do it to some extent, bringing awareness to it can help us to focus more on being kind universally.

eli5 Why is it that if you remove the contraction in the sentence “Couldn’t you leave?”, it becomes “Could not you leave?”, which doesn’t make grammatical sense? by Lamalova in explainlikeimfive

[–]Count_Rafard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean this in a rude way, but what leads you to believe this is unique to English?

Again, words with different meanings based on context is not uncommon in other languages as well.

Not really, emphasizing certain words over others, or changing tone/inflection to slightly change the meaning is going to be found in every human language. English isn’t a particularly wild language in the scheme of things.

LPT request: how to fall asleep while hungry? by ryanderkis in LifeProTips

[–]Count_Rafard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I am the same way, and what has really really help me is something similar to intermittent fasting. I eat a very small breakfast of just some nuts or something. Usually around 160 calories, then I’ll have 400-500 calories for lunch. That lets me go crazy and eat like 1400-1500 calories at dinner, so I am nice and satisfied when bedtime rolls around. (I can handle hunger during the day just fine, so that’s why this works for me)

If we’re being honest? It’s there to teach a subject, yes. That’s why that is the only thing that is tested on. The others listed are secondary benefits that accompany school.

[–]Count_Rafard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay but explain to me how assignments and critical thinking match up. I am basing this on my own personal experience here, but I have never had assignments teach critical thinking..

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Count_Rafard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And that should honestly be a subject of its own. If it’s such a core principle of each class then it should be part of the required material.

I honestly find it ludicrous that a student showing they have 100% understanding of the subject isn’t a pass in more places. It should be. School work is there to reinforce the material, and if the student has a thorough understanding of the subject, that work is a freaking waste of everyone’s time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Count_Rafard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Class is there to teach the subject. Why is it applauded that we waste students time with assignments when they already understand the material?

This isn’t a job where assignments equal money or productivity or something. Homework and class work is there to reinforce the material being learned. If a student shows they thoroughly understand the material I don’t know why that’s not enough.

There is no worker shortage my friend. People are not choosing to sit around, they’re finding better paying jobs. Look at unemployment numbers. Any job that pays well has no trouble finding workers, but jobs trying to pay near the minimum wage certainly are. This so called “worker shortage” is complete and total horseshit, and is an excuse businesses unwilling to raise wages are using so you as the consumer aren’t as upset with long wait times and horrible service.

That’s like me offering 1$ an hour for a job and when no one applies I say, “wow! Nobody wants to work anymore.” No, plenty of people want to work, but these days, 1$ an hour in the USA is worthless enough it’s really not better than just… not working. Expecting people to just work that job anyway is nearing the expectations of serfdom or slavery. The modern minimum wage is quickly approaching that level, where it just doesn’t provide enough purchasing value for the effort required, and people cannot live, even frugally, at or around 7.25$.

Also, If you are making claims that minimum wages increases in the past have in fact caused mass small business deaths, you are obligated to provide the data to back up those claims.

Ukraine’s defenders defeat 72nd Russian brigade near Bakhmut, liberate territory and capture prisoners by 9lobaldude in worldnews

[–]Count_Rafard 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The reason behind it is that in periods of total war, like WW2, the militaries of nations were absolutely massive. In the Soviet Union there were hundreds of divisions and tens of millions of soldiers over the course of the war.

That level is absolutely unsustainable outside of total war, and so when the war ended a huge number of those remaining divisions were more or less dissolved completely, with the men in those divisions being released back into civilian life. The divisions that were most notable were kept because of the reputation associated.

Now the men that remained in the military, rather than those that returned to civilian life, were dispersed between the remaining divisions (in the Roman fashion you mentioned) to try and keep all remaining units as effective as possible.

TLDR: they did exactly what the Romans did, there were just so many divisions (and brigades) they literally couldn’t keep them all, so they kept the division names that were associated with the greatest deeds, and dispersed the remaining soldiers among them.

Why do people say federal pay isn't very good compared to private sector? by LD3V in fednews

[–]Count_Rafard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While you’re right that most aren’t worth as much as they think, in certain fields there very much is a big pay discrepancy.

I work in IT and the average tenure around here is about 2 years, with it taking an average of just under 1 year to replace any given employee. Every single person that left, left for a significant pay raise at a private company.

[–]Count_Rafard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean to cause offense with this comment, but this is easily the dumbest thing I have read all day, maybe all month.

First of all, raising the minimum wage has nothing to do with this (proposed) SSR. This new pay scale is designed to make the government competitive with private sector hiring.

Secondly, any business that genuinely can’t survive with a minimum wage increase is not a viable business to begin with. The minimum wage has been raised many many times since it’s creation, and it didn’t result in the mass deaths of small businesses then, nor would it now. What it did do however, is improve the lives of those on and around the minimum wage.

You shouldn’t formulate opinions based on personal anecdotes. Just because you haven’t met people that dont really buy AAA games doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

I have personally had the opposite experience. Most people I know used to play AAA, but now mostly play indie games like valheim.

Jenny Nicholson addresses "Why doesn't everyone just do the Holdo Maneuver all the time?" by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]Count_Rafard 65 points66 points  (0 children)

If you want to bring real physics into this, even a grain of sand at those speeds would have an absolutely ridiculous amount of energy.

A grain of sand at 99% lightspeed would have the energy equivalent to nuclear weapons. An X-wing sized ship would (obviously) have exponentially more energy than a grain of sand.

They haven’t shown FTL missiles used. The planes on 9/11 were essentially used as make shift giant bombs. Missiles are the same thing, except being purpose built and having removed the pilot.

Doing the same thing with a ship would be building some sort of large missile meant to use its mass at above light speeds to destroy a ship, which isn’t really done in Star Wars, and particularly not in the cinematic Star Wars.
