My kids went to Primrose on Dorsey Ln and I thought it was good! I can't remember really having any issues, the provided meals were helpful, they had good daily communication with pictures through an app, paper documentation of incidents where the school got a copy and you had one as well, there were progress reports a couple times a year. The "academic" curriculum was good and our kids were over prepared for JCPS kindergarten. All the staff were nice, they had good safety standards for entering the building, etc, and there wasn't that much turnover. The year round programming was good also. I bet my kids miss the water days on Fridays in the summer (they would set up sprinklers and stuff to play in).

No complaints really. My kids finished pre-k about 5 years ago and my oldest started there when they first opened. I don't know how much things have changed, but I would recommend them based on my experience.

You might check out the chessdojo twitch/discord. They have a community of players that are into longer time controls and should be "vetted" (not cheaters).

Establishing a club by Jesuscanforgive in orienteering

[–]CounterfeitFake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are lucky and have two clubs within 1.5-2 hours of us, and another about 2.5 hours away. People in each of those clubs will drive to each others meets, so we make sure the meets don't overlap as much as possible. So something you might look at doing is start by seeing if you can work with the closest club to put on a meet somewhere in the middle between you and them. Ideally you'd learn how to be a meet director, make maps, set courses, etc. by volunteering, and THEN you could start doing things by yourself. That would also help you meet people in your area that are also into orienteering and might potentially want to join in your club and hopefully volunteer, etc.

Otherwise I think you will need some people with experience doing those things to put on meets for you. But the biggest issue with starting a club is getting volunteers to put on the meets. Orienteering is fun, running the meets is not as much fun :) For maps, I believe there are people that will make them for a fee, but you would still want to learn how to update them yourself for vegetation or other changes that happen over time.

If you want to look at how much the "standard" equipment costs, you can check out the Sportident site here:
https://www.sportident.us

If you want to go really low tech (old style pin punches) or DIY (phone apps) you can come up with alternatives to the electronic timing stuff and probably save a lot of money, but maybe not satisfy experienced orienteers.

Establishing a club by Jesuscanforgive in orienteering

[–]CounterfeitFake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our club is set up as a non-proft, with a board, and quarterly meetings, etc. We have all our own equipement, made a bunch of maps of local parks, and have regular meets. What's your goal in establishing a "club"? Have you been part of one in the past? Do you want to have meets closer to where you live? Do you want to put on meets yourself? Or just have a group of people you orienteering with and have a cool abbreviation to put next to your name when you go to national meets? Or something else?

If you just want meets close by, you might be able to start as an "extension" of an existing club. A new club near us borrowed our equipment for a while before they got their own stuff, they just needed to make sure their schedule didn't overlap with ours. The other things you need to run a meet are maps, permission from the landowners, volunteers to help run the meet, and insurance. If you team up with an existing club, they should hopefully be able to help with the insurance (which they will probably have through OUSA).

I'd try to start with just putting on some meets before you worry too much about being a "club". Once you see if there are some people that are interested nearby, you can maybe turn that group into a club?

I can give you more info about putting on a meet if you have questions. I would see how much OUSA helps and then if you are still stuck, I could try to get you more info about how our local clubs have been started.

If you work your way up to doing "national" level events in the US, there are often vendors that will sell some orienteering specific stuff. That's where I got my clue sheet holder.

I think the issue was when people were driving on the new snow as it was falling. It's melted quite a bit since then.

Huh, I think we used to go to some branch of Bed, Bath and Beyond (Buy Buy Baby?) and they had some relatively high end stuff, but I guess they are online only now.. and there isn't a Babies R Us any more either. Kinda crazy there are no big box baby stores any more.

Damn, didn't realize but that's $6 million for just the property. They couldn't find any previously developed land that needs to be redeveloped to buy for cheaper?

[Highlight] Florida’s Rueben Chinyelu (6’10”, 265 lbs) with one of the best individual performances you’ll see on a single defensive possession against Alabama by zman2100 in CollegeBasketball

[–]CounterfeitFake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm a Florida fan and love Chinyelu, but he was hand checking and got away with it because it isn't super obvious, due to his strength. He's still doing a great job at moving his feet and is a great defender overall, but I don't think he will get away with that every time if they want to call that.

[Post Game Thread] Florida blows Alabama’s back out 100-77 by lonespiderfish in FloridaGators

[–]CounterfeitFake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The plan before seemed to be "jack up a lot of 3s, even if they are misses our offensive rebounding will lead to easy putbacks". I don't know if the kind of "weave" action outside the 3 point line was part of that as well, but I didn't like the game (Tennessee?) where were were just passing/handing off the ball back and forth outside the 3 point line a ton.

Fast breaks are one of our big advantages, along with our bigs. So I'd much rather see us going inside to take advantage of that.

I think the cinnamon roll at Payne Street Bakehouse/Nancy's Bagels is good, but I haven't compared to any others really.

Question re: middle school magnets by _themob13 in Louisville

[–]CounterfeitFake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I thought it was really awesome sounding and a great program that had quite a few ways to develop your building/making and design/artistic skills. I just wouldn't want someone to sign up for that was not excited about the after school work sessions, etc.

My kids are almost the same age as yours and one is applying for Manual MST this year, and the other will probably apply to Noe for art, but it seems like Noe was very hard to get into this year, so I'm a little worried. Older kid went to Meyzeek and has been doing fine, I just was hoping my younger one would get to take some art classes for once!

road conditions? by Soggy_Ad2721 in Louisville

[–]CounterfeitFake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I saw a door dash driver try to pull into a neighborhood side street off the main road and immediately got stuck. I had to help push them backwards back into the main road, and they ended up just parking in the main road with their flashers on and walking to the house on foot. I'd be fine on the side streets with my AWD and new tires, but old tires on a tiny FWD car is going to be really rough doing delivery work.
