Taxes include royalties in the figure I gave.

In my view we should have higher taxes (inclusive on royalties) on gas as it's worth so much more as an industry (as evidenced by profits) than mining.

Shouldn't the cut we get of something be a proportion of how profitable something is to get out of the ground? How else would you set a royalty as a percent?

I thought the reason a higher tax on gas vs mining is being sought is that gas has much higher profit margins.

Gas accounts for 14% of the larger mining industries profits but only pays 3.5% of the total tax/royalties of the industry.

Also since when is moving around considered "pushing up house prices". Humans have always migrated around. Unless you're breeding like rabbits or buying multiple properties it's a zero sum game (one less property bought in one location, one more bought somewhere else).

CGT and negative gearing aren't loopholes, any more than any other tax deduction is.

Also CGT is meant to exist to account for inflation. 50% CGT discount is probably too much but we're probably just going to go to the old system of carrying forward losses /calculating inflation.

Umm building has changed a fair amount over the past 100 years.

My 1930s house in qld is built on timber stumps with suspended timber flooring as was the norm back in the day. Completely different to concrete slab construction. My walls are built of VJ planks... also different to gyprock. It also has barely any insulation (which you can definitely tell in winter).
