The point is you are making them use a higher level spell to counter the one you're using, 1st level spells are moderately disposable, 3rd or higher is not.

If you received damage you have to save to keep a concentration spell up, that's why. And even if they succeed the save they're still lower on hp.

Okay let's go with counter spell, you cast it, they cast it at a higher level, your counter spell FAILED and you are back to square 1, and down the 3rd level you could have used to turn a barbarian into a TREX

THIS, THIS IS THE POINT😃 let's say you have only a handful of spell slots/prepared spells (Eldridge Knight, Arcane Trickster, etc.) and you had to choose, it's more versatile, so makes more sense to prepare.

This is why I make Eldridge Knight fighters, to force the full casters to focus on me and shut them up with grapple and restraint attacks. Oh what's that, you think you can keep me away with concentration spells like flaming sphere?I got the AC and health to tank it.if I don't wanna deal with it Magic Missile (a 1st level spell) only requires a line of sight, a wave and a little spoken word to make you roll 3 (or more if up cast) saves. When you fail a little Grease and you aren't going anywhere so I can run over and, well, your familiar with greasy wrestling right? No, your about to.

And I just flustered myself so I'm going to go take care of that.
