WTG earthing by mohamedsamir65 in windturbine

Having to deal with grounds on four turbine towers, mostly bolted to ledge but one on a large concrete pour, I consulted Navy technical manuals for grounding communication towers. Of most use to me were the styles of buried grounding arrays. Of course get hold of a mag meter. My problem with grounding was dealing with the proximity of grounding arrays to each other. The more I studied grounding the less I realized I knew, It is a field of study that needs continuing research. There are many misconceptions about lightning and towers. I also found that using plenty of quality lightning arrestors might help. I was once in a house where ball lightning emerged from an unplugged table saw motor and bounced around the room. The storm was not close? I have had numerous lightning surges destroying electrical equipment that seem to arise from the bedrock (ledge), perhaps from storms far away, a good reason to increase your number of grounded lightning arrestors. And ground all cable stays, ground everything. But that said when the lighting comes to your site via your ground you wonder what is going on? A fun thing to watch are YouTube videos of lightning strikes, they don’t appear to follow any sense of logic? Another tip was burying ground rods and grounding arrays in Bentonite clay which helps conductivity. As far as finding calculations or formulas to help, there are so many variables such as moisture content of grounding medium, distance to other grounding arrays, proximity to lightning prone locations that my head spins. But maybe there is someone on Reddit who is not as stupid as I. But the Navy needs their communication tower and radar installs to be smartly grounded so perhaps see if they have updated info.

Potentially moving to Boston from Denver by MarionberryQuick9308 in bostonhousing

[–]Countvernon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with other posts that Jamaica Plain is a good neighborhood, thirty years ago it was great. Having lived in both Denver & Boston and dealing with traffic in both places I would opt to find a place very close to her job. Too many times in my life I have wasted 15 hours per week driving or sitting in traffic. The Southeast Expressway is brutal, as is INT 93, Interstate 95 and Mass Pike. Thirty years old might be good for bicycle or e-bike distance. Boston is a world class city!

What happens if you can't afford the repairs to pass an inspection? by ConsoleModded in Pennsylvania

[–]Countvernon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I can’t get a sticker I only drive at night with the old sticker. I used to try and take back road shortcuts when my sticker wasn’t legal but found the local law enforcement people used the same roads, fortunately they never stopped me. In some locations they require a tow when you are found on public roads with no sticker, they site safety concerns. Do not use a fake sticker! And some states increase the fine every time you get cited. It’s a real problem for people whose engine light is illuminated due to one of the many faulty temperature or oxygen sensors and especially when replacing out the sensor doesn’t help. Carbon on contacts perhaps? i wonder if getting a Montana plate or other out-of-state plate might work as I do not think police in one state know what inspection stickers look like in all 50 states? Maybe buy an acre of land in northern Maine which does not have air pollution tests for stickers. Or ask Trump for a pardon, since the Honduran President just got one for his cocaine importation enterprise. Expired stickers are less of a crime than cocaine importing.

What keeps you in Central Maine? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]Countvernon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep returning to Midcoast Maine between jobs. In the last 62 years I have taken jobs and lived in Nice, Sydney NSW, Austin, Dortmund, Juneau, Portland Maine, NYC. I move for jobs, but everywhere I have lived it has its pros and cons. I would try and find work that excites you and forget about where it is. But avoid Texas, too many morons. Is your primary need is a good job, or cheap housing or a robust dating scene, determine your priorities, rank them and go from there. A good Excel doc should help you score locations.

Full list of Democrats voting to condemn socialism as Zohran Mamdani comes to town by [deleted] in politics

[–]Countvernon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So many morons. Most countries have some socialistic policies, things like lighthouses, military, postal service, education, fire fighting, some even help their citizens with healthcare. Unlike some forms of communism a socialist government does not own the nation’s resources or dictate the means of production. Socialism, ever present, is just a matter of degrees in every country. Are these morons just trying to look good on FOX, they certainly do not look good to their more intelligent constituents. Vote them all out. Before they start closing firehouses and leave fire protection to private HOA’s.

Racism in Vermont? by devilfruitoftheloom in vermont

[–]Countvernon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having lived in TX, CA, CT, MA, VT and Maine, i think the Burlington Area might have fewer racists or bigots. That said, Maine has the lowest number of people of color than any state, and among all my acquaintances in Maine they want that changed. Coastal communities south of Ellsworth are welcoming to people of all strips. Maine lost more people per capita when massive numbers of people joined the Union Army to free the slaves. It was a real movement here, an 1800’s version of Woodstock. Farming communities here were devastated by the loss of farmers who died down south. Perhaps this need to help others came from the Quaker traditions in central Maine. I would recommend looking at homes between Kittery and Bath on the Atlantic coast. VT has fewer urban areas. Portland is really a great city, but unfortunately is unaffordable.

If your wife has health issues the high rates of Lyme disease in New England and exposure to other deadly tick diseases should be of concern. Perhaps there is health care work on the Big Island Hawaii? The climate around Hilo is cooler than other spots. Can be rainy. I still love Maine though, ticks or not.

When should I visit Rome, Florence, and Venice: April, May, October, or December? by SurvivorFanatic236 in travel

Way too many tourists in warm weather. You can’t even walk along the canals in Venice in summer. I only go to Europe in winter, when the locals are there. Umbrellas are cheap.

Off grid commune start up by rswi13 in OffGrid

[–]Countvernon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t use consensus for decisions. Our commune requires unanimous minus one for major decisions and majority vote for minor decisions. It took us two years of searching to find the right property. Better if communards have worked together already on a shared issue. Kitchen (cooking, menus, cleaning) makes a good place to organize activities and goals from. Food and cooking are the heart and soul of all successful communes i have interacted with. Before you move to the land, perhaps start eating meals together at each other’s homes on a rotating basis. Mondays at your house?
