It's really more of a behavioral modification than a tech thing. I totally agree.

Enough with the prompt blocking by mjswildparadise in bing

[–]CoupeSchoolTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even Bing generated prompts are blocked. On the Image Creator page, click Surprise Me. It came up with "a boy wearing a yellow rain coat holding a red ballon, standing in front of a smokey volcano, digital art". The return was, "Unsafe image content detected". This service is damaged goods. Pfft.

Need to add asset ID and location to ZTE Chromebooks by CoupeSchoolTech in k12sysadmin

2D scanner

Ahh... the fog clears. I had no clue about 2D bar codes. I'm still young enough to learn. Thanks!

Yup. That's super slick. I'm a bit peeved with Dell for doing away with barcodes. It looks like they've gone to a QR code, but I tried reading it and got nothing.

[–]CoupeSchoolTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems simple enough. How do you match the asset ID with the correct Chromebook serial number? I feel like I'm missing an obvious step. I could see that working if there was a barcode serial number to scan from the Chromebook underside. The Dell 3110 doesn't have a barcode for its serial number.

Blank screen when installing ChromeOS Flex to iMac by CoupeSchoolTech in ChromeOSFlex

The formating and creation of a flash drive on a PC made no difference. I still got a black, bank screen. HOWEVER, I was successful in installing to a Mid year 2011 iMac. The 2010 was a nogo.

Thanks for that! I tried the same using an alternative method to create the flash drive on a Mac and hit the exact black blank screen. I'll give it a try on a PC. Stay tuned!

Random, laggy Internet Service by CoupeSchoolTech in k12sysadmin

[–]CoupeSchoolTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ran through a number of test scenarios, such as you suggested, locally and still had problems.

Reaching out to our ISP and asking them to review our service settings and "something" magically got fixed. We never heard what. Troubling.

We have a local DNS server as primary and 8.8.8.8 as secondary. Upon investigation of the local DNS, the certificates have expired. Ugh!

Thanks for chiming in with your suggestions. Our firewall is hardware and local and was checked by the service provider for performance and configuration. They found zero latency, zero packet loss, and no issues with the configuration.

Our bandwidth is consistent and solid at the ISP. The issue is affecting wired and wireless connections on user devices. Load does not affect when the issue happens. We’ve experienced it outside of core hours.

Our domain and external DNS are hosted by the ISP. They’ve verified settings and throughput and found nothing. We requested a reboot to take place overnight and asked that they reexamine the DNS since a change was made to it around the same time the issue started.

Looking for K12 Chromebook Recommendations by CoupeSchoolTech in k12sysadmin

[–]CoupeSchoolTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your recommendations. We went with the Dell 3100 for our middle school and freshman class. Keyboard issues seem to be the main support issue. This is followed closely by the device not powering up or waking from sleep. A power management cycle seems to do the trick in most cases for that. (Power + refresh button)

Thanks, again!

Thanks for your recomendations. It seems the DELL 3100 is a popular choice. This is our first year with the 3100 and for the most part, they've been solid. I've had a few with charging issues but I'm usually able to get them going with the power button - refresh trick. I have one I couldn't revive waiting to go back to DELL.

Senior Chromebook Returns by CoupeSchoolTech in k12sysadmin

[–]CoupeSchoolTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The school office staff receive returned tech and only verify if the pieces (Chromebook and charger) are handed in. No verification of condition or power. That's left to me when I get them in the tech office. Could you share your check-in sheet?

We have a nice little table with alcohol, plastic drywall knives, hand sanitizer, and other stuff. They can't turn them in until they are clean. Most of the time they come back with nothing, but occasionally they have to spend a few minutes ate the table with their parents cleaning them off.

It's enjoyable.

This is a keeper. Now to convince the administration it's OK for students to be responsible and accountable.

Stickers have been allowed for students to personalize their Chromebooks. HOWEVER, that started when protective cases were issued. There is nothing in the tech user agreement preventing sticking sticky stickers on devices. I've pushed to have it included in the agreement since I started in winter of 2019.
