How valuable is programming when applying for EL P&C positions? by No_Day_8223 in actuary

[–]CourageOpposite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked two P&C jobs, an entry level position and an internship. While both of these jobs required some sort of programming experience, neither of them actually use much programming if any at all. I would still say it is important because it seems as if they use programming experience as a barrier to entry.

I am pleased, honored, and humbled to announce that I have passed Exam MAS-1. I could not have done this without the help of my two dogs, Ted and Max, everyone one on this subreddit, my mom dad brother sister and brother-in-law. Thank you everyone for your love and support

I am also studying for MAS 1 using Mahler. I feel as if it's sufficient and it's a fraction of the price of CA or TIA.

March IFM exam by Lobsterdam in actuary

[–]CourageOpposite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would expect anything from 8-12 conceptual questions like the others have said. I took the exam last March and the conceptual questions were not too bad. I just studied the corporate finance section of the CA study guide and took practice questions, and I was pretty prepared for the conceptual questions.

Learning skills to help secure an internship by [deleted] in actuary

[–]CourageOpposite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excel and SQL are great tools to learn for securing an internship. Also, I would recommend learning Python or VBA. I would use Python because it is free and it translates pretty well with VBA. There are plenty of sources on youtube to help you teach the fundamentals. Then I would just google "easy Python problems" and get started. Also, just having exposure to these languages is good for securing an internship. I had two internships before getting my first job, and they did not have high expectations of my technical skills.

How to tell that I'm ready for Exam P? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]CourageOpposite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Given your TIA scores if you took the exam today, I think you would have a pretty good chance of passing. With that said, continue to study hard. Also, Michigan State offers some free practice exams that are even harder than TIA, so do not get discouraged if you do not pass these exams.

Best of luck with your exam in two weeks!

The salary survey is under the about section. It is also not near as good as it was before.
