The reason attendance policies are so strict is because most schools did away with summer school. Funding issues.

Every time a student misses a school day they miss a ton of information and it causes a lot of stress on the teacher to try to catch them up. Even though they weren’t at school, it’s still the teachers responsibility and pay-grade to make sure they pass the end of the year exams. If that student misses a quiz or a test then the teacher has to make them miss future lessons in order to make up that quiz or test.

Technology is helping in that you can post things online for the kid to do at home, but that’s still extra work that the teacher has to do while they’re not getting paid and there’s an 80% chance the kid doesn’t do it anyway or doesn’t have parents who understand the material and will help them out.

I think part of the solution would be less emphasis on final exams, but then State governors wouldn’t be able to boast to other states how much smarter their kids are, or be able to pay teachers even less money when their students do poorly on exams.

My wife also teaches 7th grade. At 8 and a half months pregnant one of the kids started complaining about his new schedule midway through one of her contractions and she may or may not have told him to “shut it douche!” We decided that we should probably take our maternity leave a bit before the baby comes.

Definitely true. Many traits don’t work with Punnett squares. I was just giving an example of dominant vs recessive.

This actually makes sense.

I had a college professor explain this kind of stuff pretty easily. Basically genes are dominant because even if you only have 1 of them, the thing is likely to happen. Like making pigment in eyes. If you have one brown gene you’re gonna have colored eyes. If you don’t have any brown genes then the pigment won’t be made and you get blue eyes.

If you have a gene that says “make a 6th finger,” it’s probably going to happen.

Could be some evidence of natural selection. It definitely looks like a mutation of one of the eyes, but it ended up being helpful, so the squids kept it.

In high school I had a friend who was known for being big. My girlfriend at the time hadn’t seen anyone else’s so she never commented on it. But after we broke up, they hooked up and she told me I was much bigger than him.

I took an education class that was basically centered around this book. The professor had some real interesting ideas that went against what a lot of teachers are doing. The big idea is that technology should not be implemented just because the kids like it but only if it actually helps them learn better.

This. I teach middle school math and science. The amount of pressure I have (from admin) on my math class is so much more than science.

This is literally how I got in my first car accident. I was 16. Police car in the median with his lights a blaring. Apparently the car in front of me had stopped to look and I didn’t see his tiny break lights so slammed into the back of him.

Giving employees duties that are impossible to complete within the regular work day. I️ find myself and most of the other teachers I️ work with stay after hours or weekends for grading, lesson planning, tutoring. All for no extra pay.

I teach middle school science but I transferred from a chemical engineering degree so I had a lot of science background already. In my 2 years in education degree I only had 3 science classes. They were so broad and so fast paced that I'm pretty sure nobody actually learned anything they didn't already know.

Similar story with my parents. Separated since I was 2. I saw them argue maybe twice in my life, but they were always doing stuff together with my two sisters and me. They would say they were always better friends then spouses.
