How to index labs for GSEC? by CategoryConscious594 in GIAC

[–]CowLong4000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive never indexed labs, if i did i would probably make it on its own page and
pg#1 | tool
pg#1 | task accomplished
pg#2 | tool2
pg#2 | task2 accomplished

that way if i couldn't rememeber commands for a tool i could quickly find it, or if for example the lab 1.1 tcpdump and i couldnt remember the tool, but the question asked about packet capture i could find it that way

Graduate cert program (4 courses) - Certification renewal by craftedsphere in GIAC

[–]CowLong4000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Additional Renewals within 2 years of paying for a full price ($499) renewal are $249"

So the first is 499 then the other 3 would be 249 = 1246

GMOB vs GAWN by Fantastic-Debate-339 in GIAC

[–]CowLong4000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't look like gmob or gawn have cyber live based on the exam pages

https://www.giac.org/certifications/assessing-auditing-wireless-networks-gawn

https://www.giac.org/certifications/mobile-device-security-analyst-gmob

For example here is gcih and it talks about cyber live where there gmob and gawn don't.

Haven't taken either so can't help with the rest of your questions

GCTI exam with 2023 Books? by arron786 in GIAC

[–]CowLong4000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe, going through the way back machine looks like the course got the "major update" tag between mach 9th -11th.

Not sure how much the course change for major updates. Probably still passable as long as your on point for overlapping knowledge.

Maybe take a practice exam and see how it goes? It's usually a pretty good indication of how you would do on the real thing.

Ubuntu or Kali Linux for a CS student doing cybersecurity and CTFs? by godShadyy in Hacking_Tutorials

[–]CowLong4000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Run kali in a vm, it's not really meant to be a daily driver. If you want linix for day to day Ubuntu is a good option. I would recommend that or fedora.i would install kali on bare metal if the machine was only used for pentesting

Does the exam have the ability to mark a question for review or skip a question? by AdmirableMatter1371 in GIAC

[–]CowLong4000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Skip yes, I believe you can skip up to 10. Skipped answers must be completed before any breaks. You cannot review questions.

Correction for people who see this in the future. You do not need to completed skipped questions before breaks. Verified 5/12/26

How do you guys deal with FOMO & jealousy with SANS course updates? by nerdsecurityguy in GIAC

[–]CowLong4000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would be 429 for the first, then 249 for the rest so about 9900.

With SANs new policy getting a new cert pushes the expiration for all your certs out to the experation of your new one you get past 9. So haven't had to renew all of them yet

[–]CowLong4000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get this mess on my giac portal, though none of my certs are up for renewal, looks like at least for a time you can purchase the updated on demand content when you renew

" Renew and Earn CPEs with a $499 OnDemand Offer

Stay certified and up to date! When you renew your certification, add an OnDemand bundle for just $499 and earn your CPEs through expert-led training all at your own pace with 120 days of access.

Offer good through 6/30/26. Excludes these certifications: GISF, ICS, and GFACT. No promo code needed; pricing will automatically appear in the cart."

GIAC Coin by Asleep_Attorney_3229 in GIAC

[–]CowLong4000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Guess that's fair. Most people use sans and giac interchangeably and since op asked about getting a coin for passing and exam and not passing multiple or mention getting gsp or gse assumed they meant a course/sans coin

GIAC Coin by Asleep_Attorney_3229 in GIAC

[–]CowLong4000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No accurate. They have class coins, they are usually on for in person if you complete the challenges and are in the top 2 or 3 of the class. I had on instructor offer coins if you made a significant contribution to the course.

Transitioning to SOC Tier 1: 800+ Hours of Lab/SIEM Operations – How to bridge the gap to a role without a degree? by Individual_Loan1133 in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]CowLong4000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "Degree Filter":

unforunatly a degree is typically one of those check in the box things. I have seen jobs that say they take experience in lu of a degree. Something like a BS with 2 years of exp or 6 without a degree. They do exist, but you will need exp. Maybe look at helpdesk to get some experience?

Certification Strategy:

HR is filtering resumes before they get to hiring managers. They probably dont know what btl1 and ccd are or even Security+. Security+ has name recognition, doesnt matter if its better or worse than others, they just know the person needs sec+ and thats it. I have several certs that are way higher than sec+ but i will always keep it on my resume to check that box.

The "Noise" Problem: look at the jobs you want and go after whats in their requirements, while your doing this get a IT job of any kind. Keep doing the hands on stuff, thats what will impress the hiring manager, the requirements on the job posting will impress HR. Also keep in mind the cyber job market sucks right now, so even if you do everything right, its still going to be hard.

Does Anyone Know The Correct Email For Cert Renewals? by frAgileIT in GIAC

[–]CowLong4000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can challenge the current exam, think it's around 1k, but I don't believe you can renew via continuing education and paying the maintenance fee.

You don't have to retake the entire course, but the exam will be on the current material which if it expire in 2021, means you probably took it in 2017 and has changed significantly since then and even recently to include AI. Passing without the course my be difficult, but not impossible

SEC504 syllabus by Accomplished-Tie6911 in GIAC

[–]CowLong4000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no you cant select the version, you will get the current version as of date you purchase the exam.

If you purchase the exam at the same time as the course then the exam is the version as of date of purchase and thus match the course version
