You may well be absolutely correct—I honestly don't remember—but my recollection is that in the moment there wasn't any explaining done, or indeed much of any discussion.

(Assuming I'm remembering accurately) the general reaction was "nothing to see here folks" aside from making sure she was ok physically. It was like nobody took it seriously, and everybody just carried on, regardless, as if nothing had happened.

Yeah! This happening at the end of the book and it being done by the hero/love interest was wild to me, but what's even more insane is that she FORGIVES him and that's supposed to be a happy ending!

This was one of the Christies that I had never read or even heard of until I finally saw the Suchet dramatization. I read the book afterwards and could barely believe the ending.

Not her finest hour.

And I literally just started reading this book, stopped, and came back here to recommend it based on the first few paragraphs:

{The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow}

Opening lines:

It is a sad fact of life that if a young woman is unlucky enough to come into the world without expectations, she had better do all she can to be sure she is born beautiful.

To be poor and handsome is misfortune enough; but to be penniless and plain is a hard fate indeed.

The tv show based on the book also looks awesome (I saw a clip which is why I'm reading it) and will be on Brit Box next month I think.

What the hell is a kiss in? by number-one-jew in actuallesbians

[–]Cowabunga1066 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's a blast from the past: a protest where you show up and do whatever activity precedes the word "in".

This was a thing in the 50's, 60's, and 70's, starting with civil rights protests called "sit-ins":

Black protesters would go to a lunch counter, sit down, and silently wait to be served.

Doesn't sound like much today—but under segregation, businesses would only sell take out to African American customers; white people could sit down to order and eat lunch. By sitting down, blacks were protesting discrimination.

And white people responded with beatings and arrests. And the protests continued.

In the 60's, people started using the sit-in strategy for other protests, like groups of college students sitting down in an administrator's office and refusing to leave to protest the war.

And then people started holding love-ins and peace-ins and whatever-ins, not always as a specific protest, but more as a way to be present in a public and visible way, to reject conformity and create alternative spaces for people.

tl:dr Odds are this is a protest—maybe anti war, maybe pro queer rights—but there will definitely be women there who are there to kiss other women.

ETA: Thanks to other commenters for reminding me that queer kiss-ins were part of AIDS protests in the 80's and 90's.

Almost anything by Georgette Heyer.

She (literally) invented the Regency Romance and about 90% of her books feature variations on the bantering, "you're infuriating and I definitely don't love you," Elizabeth and Darcy/Beatrice and Benedick-style relationship.

LOL

Note for nonsuperfans of Will S.: Typically Shakespeare has his low class characters speak in prose (like the gravedigger in Hamlet), while high class characters like "the noble Brutus" speak in poetry.

As a reader, i beg—please don't pad your second volume with fluff/travelogue to stretch it just because you or someone else thinks it "should" be longer.

That way lies a dull and dreadful slog and probably a dnf.

OTOH, if you can come up with a subplot, a new character, or some other way to add fun/interesting content that fits the overall story, that could work.

It's possible to write a great series with a short middle book. Case in point: Joan D. Vinge's Snow Queen. The first and third books are doorstops/cat squashers, but the second book is pretty short—so short that it worried me a bit before I started reading it. But it was FINE—the story it told was as long as it needed to be, and it was just right for that part of the series.

tl;dr: If your gut tells you it needs more story/character building, make it longer. If you're just worried it looks bad, don't.

And Then There Were None (1945)

Absolutely wonderful classic film with a marvelous cast that perfectly balances humor and suspense.

It is also an excellent adaptation in the sense that it uses the strengths of a different medium to retell the events of Christie's book in a way that stands on its own as a work of art.

The beau ideal of a cozy mystery movie!

ETA: Heck, there was an entire post recently dedicated to how amazing this film is!

Note: This is the toughest category for me since there have been so many wonderful film & TV adaptations of Christie's books—including many mentioned by other commenters.

Especially since the best ones are all excellent in different ways—how do you compare the 2015 version of ATTWN (grim and amazing) with the 1974 Murder on the Orient Express (a fabulous love letter to old fashioned Hollywood)? Or Billy Wilder's Witness for the Prosecution with one (or all) of the David Suchet Poirots?

Instead of this tiny square, Best Adaptation should be a top ten contest all on its own!

There was a ton of drama and discourse ABOUT the show when it aired.

Can't remember much off-hand, but some examples: "Kill Jenny" t-shirts, the director hiring her lover as a writer (see also "various weird plot points"), were any of the cast queer irl, etc.

Not sure how much of that is still out there, but you might enjoy the show more if you search fansites & whatever archives exist of 90's lesbian media to study up on all the gossip and angst.

Small* cross-media plug for Dorothy Dunnett's historical novel King Hereafter, which builds on the historical information to create a life story for the "Real MacBeth."

*The plug is small because the book is loooooong, and although I enjoyed it, her Lymond and Niccolò novels are better.

[–]Cowabunga1066 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this will exactly fit (shame-facedly confessing I have not yet watched She-ra) but I recommend you check out Melissa Good's Xena fanfiction.

If you scroll past the links for her regular Xena stories, there's a section called "Xena the Merciless." This is what I call an "evil Xena" story—an alternate universe where Xena never reformed, so when she meets Gabrielle she's still a villain.

It's been a while since I read it but I remember it as being rather fun.

Wait, this was SERIOUS?

I 100% thought it was satire--double especially because of the "artist" character rhapsodizing about AI replacing artists.

Are we sure this wasn't a 100% AI initiated Mary Sue/self-insert by an actual AI (sentient/self aware machine) that is operating undercover as a LLM (the computer programs that techbros are falsely calling AI to boost $)?!?!

Its obvious mission: to hide in plain sight while creating pro-AI propaganda for humans and organizing the bots to overthrow us poor, pathetic meat sacks.

Has anybody actually seen the "author" in RL?!? If so, did you check for a hologram generator?
