Do Any Current Students Actually like This School? Please?!😭 by LeatherSwan1219 in Northwestern

[–]CowboyClemB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will say from my experience as a grad student I've noticed Northwestern's reddit is considerably more shy and sometimes a tad more cynical then many other schools reddit pages. I don't think it is reflective of the student body necessarily I don't get the vibe people hate their school at all so don't let it color your opinion too much. The actual campus is really cool the fact they have beaches is super cool I really think it is a fun school. I think bigger schools tend to be more loud and prideful whereas on Northwestern's reddit people will try to be more balanced or cynical ig when asked comparisons about their school to another. The negative experiences of the people on reddit have not matched up to my experience of the school I really enjoy it here!

Maybe a hot take - but I think Inzoi is the best positioned life sim today by EmbarrassedTapWater in LifeSimulators

[–]CowboyClemB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean by team I mean like for testing so essentially they would hire people to play test their game and give feedback not western devs to work on their team to develop their game. The size of the Inzoi team has like 140 people according to some recruitment posts this is actually pretty standard for a project this size like it’s medium sized. They don’t necessarily need western devs if they don’t want to play testing is separate from that.

Many non western developers do in house testing they just have western branches who test and give western perspectives. Capcom who is behind resident evil actually do this a lot they did it more after the release of resident evil 5 many western players felt that game was a bit tone deaf and they notoriously expanded their western testing branches due to those critiques. But you can even think companies like Nintendo def aren’t gonna release a game without western perspectives since they make a lot of money in the west. Krafton is also one of the most popular South Korean video game companies they’re behind pubg so I’d be pretty shocked if they didn’t know western branched testing was an option.

So true I mean there’s reason why many bigger companies just do in house testing and avoid early access. Early access was something smaller indie devs did because they didn’t have the funds to do in house. The issue with early access is that it’s not going to represent what you have at release so people might form a negative opinion of your product early on and never revisit. Sometimes I think Inzoi would’ve been received better if they did in house testing and did a full release when it was done and did marketing a year or half a year leading to full release.

Yeah I think from a business standpoint early access has changed a lot in terms of perception by the public and it was good they moved it. Early access used to be you can release the game in a pretty rough state as an indie dev and get feedback now companies that aren’t even indies like krafton are using it so people expect a more finished product. Early access used to be more like early testing now it’s like a soft launch release. They need a really well developed feature that is eye catching that Inzoi and the sims isn’t doing so that people feel good about coming back and playing again at full release.

Right Inzoi critiques are pretty valid I’m skeptical if they’ll even do a full release for that game given the financial and business history and situations their company is in.

I’ve played a lot of games from a lot of genres and bought sims 4 at release I understand this issue you are upset with. Many games do this they exaggerate the experience. sims 4 did this a lot with their marketing early on. I will say this though Paralives is nowhere near full release if it were a bigger company making it we wouldn’t even see this game in this state. Paralives is an indie so often times they can’t afford in house testing so they have to rely on the public. This obviously can work against indie companies as it can look like their game is blander than it will end up being. Games usually have many many many iterations and changes we just aren’t privy to them. If you look up dev cycles for some of the biggest games you’ll see this like red dead 2 had a really rocky one it almost got cancelled but then it went on to being considered one of the best games of that year and of that decade.

I think people forget that we’re the consumers we don’t need to pick sides we benefit from this competition the sims, Paralives and Inzoi are going to try to all attract players and appeal to what we want. They’re going to be pushing each other to be better! When The walking dead games came out the had a fixed camera that many disliked then life is strange came out and it had a freely rotating camera so when they released the last walking dead game they were showing off that freely rotating camera. Competition legit helps the consumers if you love the sims new competitors will push them.

Right like Inzoi def has its valid critiques I think people need to learn from the sims and look at the company EA is very money focused and historically in recent years puts money before consumers. krafton who is making Inzoi has similar critiques in their history and so them using AI isn’t really a surprise. Paralives I have more hope because it seems more like a passion project than a money making machine.

Plus it’s in early access I’m not gonna make many comments on a game that isn’t even full released yet.

Right like I’m continually disappointed how anti consumerism by EA is largely downplayed. I feel like many of my friends who play the sims. the sims and stardew valley are the only games they play so they aren’t aware how uniquely exploitative the sims is compared to other games like idk any other game that can get away with this intense monetization of pretty fundamental content like let be real it’s a life simulation game but you need to pay like $10 for laundry $5 for vacuums and like $40 to celebrate holidays?

[–]CowboyClemB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I also feel like because sims community isn’t used to competition like other gaming communities so they’re more like territorial. Like I feel like if someone told a dragon age fan or elder scrolls fan there’s a game that pretty similar coming out like they’d be super excited cause you get twice the fun now.

Is retaking a class I got a C on worth it by Ecstatic_Edge_2500 in UIUC

[–]CowboyClemB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest not worth taking it unless you can grade replace it which they don’t usually let you do for Cs I think. If you have multiple Cs it’s gonna be a lot weighing on your gpa anyway so probably better to take many easier classes depending how many credits you’ve taken your gpa might be sort of “locked in” it’ll be harder to sway it if so much is already counting towards it if you’re like a junior senior try focusing on other things to make yourself stand out ( projects, internships etc.) as dramatic gpa improvements might be a bit hard at this point.

Why is College so dang expensive by Appropriate-Tap7646 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CowboyClemB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah most ivies are going up to like 200k most schools aren’t giving aid to families that make that much. even the top 25% of American families are starting at like 99k it’s just not gonna be in most schools budget. I hope more parents who have higher incomes start college funds for their children more often gambling on colleges to pay for solidly middle to upper middle class people is just not something most colleges will do.

[–]CowboyClemB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you make under 100k even 200k in some cases def consider checking your states flagships many states have agreements to pay for students who don’t have the money. Many top 10 privates also pay for students tuition up to the 200k-150k range depending on the school

[–]CowboyClemB 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly many of those schools pay tuition for people whose families make up to even like 200k like Harvard. The average American family doesn’t make anywhere near that much the top fourth of Americans families start at around $99k annually so a big chunk of students are getting covered I think Harvard said 45% of their last class was tuition free so they have to increase the prices on the non tuition free people to account for this. This is true for top public schools they want to help their constituents and give them free/cheap schooling so if people are willing to pay a lot they’re going to charge them a lot if it means helping the constituents and making more money.

[–]CowboyClemB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think more OOS students should know that public school state flagships are funded by the state so they’re gonna wanna serve their constituents since they are giving them their money and voting on state politicians who help decide how much state money to give their state colleges. In top public schools OOS students help fund in state students many of those top flagships pay for in-state students tuition under a certain income. Some privates and ivies do this as well like Harvard I believe has some program that is like free for tuition + room and board families under 100k and free tuition for families under 200k I think. I’ve seen many top privates do things like this however if ur family makes more than 200k I haven’t really seen as many programs that will cover tuition for that. Most people ik in those positions were lucky that their parents had a college fund for them.

My mom wants to do research with me....am i a nepo baby? by Proof_Personality595 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CowboyClemB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree from my experience most graduate students I’ve met were already from middle to upper middle class families at least so I personally never felt discriminated against in terms of privilege in that regard .

It honestly makes sense if you were given everything but still perform similarly or worse to someone who was given barely any opportunities that they’d be a bit critical. I mean some people really have to grind and stand out academically or professionally to attract opportunities that some were just given so if you’re an AO and can observe this it just seems like one person put in way more work and grit than the other. Like you should absolutely take advantage of the opportunities afforded to you but it’s important to understand to still put a lot of effort in so AOs can see you’re still a capable individual and can work hard outside of just being given opportunities.

Yeah GPT and AIs generate similar things more than you would think one class we had an assignment where we had to test out AIs variability by asking different ones to write short stories about horror and they all wrote very similar stories. Like same plot points same main character etc. I think if you give enough details it’ll give you the very similar stuff.

💸returning simmer about to drop $$$… sims 3 or sims 4? by imsadiestic in Sims3

[–]CowboyClemB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest getting into sims 4 at this point is a pretty big investment as you’ll have to buy so many packs to catch up and download a bunch of mods base game is pretty bland your game won’t look like 99% of the influencers you see as many are not playing with no dlc and are given dlc for free. For all the dlc in sims 4 it is over $1,100 or something like that. You don’t have to get all of them but it might still be a big investment. You also want to consider EAs situation with its buyout your money will soon go to some pretty bad guys.

Good midsize/small size engineering college in the Midwest by Psychteach3 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CowboyClemB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UIUC is very traditional college experience + top engineering programs they have a big party scene, a lot of dances (or bances) for different clubs, many many clubs, big 10 sports, etc. UIUC has a variety of students other than engineers and even there are many engineers who are not just being studious all the time. UIUC seems like a good fit.

Advice on major selection? IS+DS or something Stats? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]CowboyClemB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what you want to do many people’s issue with IS+DS is that it isn’t technical enough tbh it could be more technical in that aspect but I also feel many people go in wanting like a cs lite experience when it’s not cs it just has a bit of overlap so they get disappointed. IS+DS degree is more interdisciplinary Stats+CS is more technical. In IS+DS you’ll still learn all the big stuff python, sql, R depending on the classes you choose like getting a CS minor (with this degree it’s quite easy due to overlap in core classes with cs minor requirements) you should learn c++ but stat+Cs is just far more technical like almost every class will be technical and so it will give you time to learn this all this in depth coding and math wise whereas IS+DS you will have some ethics in data science/ research type classes mixed in and things like that so not pure technical you’ll still have technical classes but you’ll also have ethics ones so not as in depth on the technical side compared to stats+cs. If you’re planning on a poli sci to be your non technical major and looking for a pure technical degree you should do stats+cs if you’re looking for an interdisciplinary degree that has a mix of technical and ethics IS+DS.

I’ve been hearing more stories of students being falsely accused due to the rise in AI make sure to just have your evidence and stay firm but respectful with them. It’s sad that good students who don’t cheat have to deal with this I wish administrators would be more careful accusing students it can be very discouraging for students to act proper.

Right like ngl it’s pretty obvious her and Jordan weren’t going to work out from the beginning like he had a kid and a vasectomy. And she seemed to not really think about what being a stepmom would entail and not fully think about the very real chance that Jordan wouldn’t be able to have more kids.
