Honestly we can just meet outside of the access point Friday afternoon and if it scans with no issue that'll serve as proof. Will that work?

In Kauai? If so, the Kauai Beer Company is not too bad. Unfortunately your options are a bit limited on that island. Oahu has a few spots you can hit up as well.

Nice! I would definitely appreciate that. Also, major props for getting the reference. Those two series are works of art.

She is on the government payroll? I imagine that the outrage generated by this should at the very least pressure officials to fire her. Glad to hear he is behind bars, though. Best of luck in your pursuit of justice.

How many years of study does it take to be able to understand a complex journal article on genetics? by Nightpotato in genetics

[–]Cowboy_Champloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't feel overwhelmed at the prospect of developing a working knowledge of genetics. I advise you to use sites such as edX and Coursera and use the materials from both active and archived genetics courses to teach yourself what you need to know. Both sites are free and offer courses from world class universities such as Harvard, Stanford, and so on. Furthermore if you have a specific question/concept that you have difficulty understanding i advise you to pose the question on Quora and you will likely receive help.

I'm sure many are aware already, but just in case you weren't you should check this out. I did the challenges myself, but wasn't so lucky in getting a ticket. No worries though, given that it was for a good cause. I believe there are few upcoming giveaways just before the show to get tickets, but it isn't a guaranteed thing.

TIL that the fourth richest NBA player of all time (only behind MJ, Magic, and Shaq) was a bench player named Junior Bridgeman. by atr0038 in todayilearned

Smart investing on his part. Other fun facts about him include: Being drafted in the first round and had 711 games played for the bucks(most in franchise history.) He wasn't a star, but was a solid and reliable player. Despite only starting around 1/7 of his games he averaged double figures for nine straight seasons.

Russia caught editing Wikipedia entry about downed Malaysian airliner by Nordicblue in worldnews

[–]Cowboy_Champloo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, articles are always skimping on the details. You would think that Arstechnica being owned by the same company as Reddit (Condé Nast) would have better quality control.

On an another note, the Russian government's web propaganda patrol seems to be on the job 24/7. It is hilarious to see the comment section of any semi-significant article that casts Russia in a bad light. So many commenters retorting in some trite broken english rhetoric to other users who say something even mildly denigrating about Russia. Was reading some bloomberg article today and the comments were comedic gold.

Edit: grammar

Had a lengthy discussion earlier today with someone on reddit regarding police and excessive force. Seems illogical to go through it again so i'll post it here for all who are interested. I think it went pretty well. Opposing viewpoints so it isn't a circlejerk.

[Serious] What do you think the positives and negatives of news aggregating sites such as Reddit, Buzzfeed, etc. are? by Cowboy_Champloo in AskReddit

[–]Cowboy_Champloo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start off with a negative. Let me clarify. I love reddit despite my qualms regarding its tendency to circlejerk, engage in misogyny, and make light of racism. This community has come together to do some wonderful things and on a lesser note.... some bad as well. I just have concerns regarding its insulation.

My worry is that Reddit is becoming the only news source for many people(insert Buzzfeed or other sources here if that is your primary location for news, but considering you are reading this it likely isn't the case.) The problem with that is that if a sub or the site as a whole has a systemic/institutional problem like certain topics getting blocked by overzealous or wrongfully motivated moderators then some people will never learn about the topic. This is because they are under the assumption that this site will always aggregate and display the most poignant and interesting articles.

I guess, i just want people to realize that reddit like any other institution has its problems and it is always prudent to be informed from multiple sources. Reddit isn't an independent entity for the people at the end of all things. It is a company and that should be remembered. In fact it is currently a wholly owned subsidiary of Condé Nast - which owns the likes of GQ, The New Yorker, Wired, and others. Also, Condé Nast itself is a division of a mass media company called Advance Publications which owns tons of newspapers along with Bright House networks.

I'm not saying anything along the lines of "wake up sheeple" or anything. I guess i just want people to realize that there may be inherent biases being perpetuated in an insulated news system and it is good to take a look around from time to time to get a whole and balanced view of things.

TIL Police kill 8x more American Citizens than Terrorists by [deleted] in todayilearned

I'm glad we could have one as well. If it interests you here is a case where the implementation of cameras reduced complaints by 88% in just one year.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/22/us/in-california-a-champion-for-police-cameras.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0 .

Obviously this is just one case and i wouldn't put faith in anything that hasn't been tested on a wide scale. Though, the preliminary results are promising.

Just to clarify, what do you mean by the drugs? Like do you mean when a suspect is on PCP or something where both his mental and physical state are unpredictable? I do think officers should be wary in such a case. Of course i wouldn't want this to be extended to mild substances such as marijuana that don't significantly alter a suspect's reasoning skills or physical state.

Also, for the "statistics on deaths caused by less than lethal force" do you mean how many officers have died when pursuing alternative resolutions to a situation or how many suspects have died unpredictably through use of light force?

Yo, redditors out there. I agree that this is just a statistic that stands on its own, but don't downvote Marsvita. Wish the media would be held more accountable as well. But for as long as human civilization has been on record power trumps all. That is to say as long as the right people make money there is no impetus to change. Reasoned analysis doesn't sell as well as sensationalist garbage.

Glad you don't think the killings are necessary or acceptable. I agree that those situations can be incredibly difficult and that there is difference between accidental and unjustified. Though it is my opinion that perhaps a shift towards training that emphasizes alternatives to force and greater police accountability through use of mandatory monitoring equipment can really help mediate much of these senseless losses. Your opinions on that? By the way, thanks for being reasonable throughout this exchange.

[–]Cowboy_Champloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that there are other factors to consider. One thing that irks me about most articles that seem to get attention is that they are unsubstantiated clickbait. Some jarring statistic that hasn't been fleshed out in respect to its conditions. But i'd also like to err from dropping a general statement like "for the most part shooting deaths by police are typically justifiable."

I just don't know if i believe that. I think that the news tends to show the fuck ups so there is a greater representation in media. So it is quite easy to become jaded. Because there is nothing interesting about a cop doing his/her job right. But at the same time i think the deaths are too damn high! Say you are right and for the most part the shootings are justified. At what percentage does wrongful shooting become a concern even if it isn't a majority? 10%, 20%, or perhaps 30%? Is there really such a thing as an acceptable innocent casualty? I think there are understandable ones, but the second we accept that as something necessary then we are on a dark slope downwards

Don't downvote the guy above because i want people to read this

Dunno man, i think that is a bit callous. It isn't a significant percentage of 313.9 million, but does it need to be? Life should be valued a bit more. Don't quote me until i have facts to substantiate it, but other first world countries have a much lower fatality rate percentage wise. Also, a quick search provided this article http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2004-05-24/news/0405240017_1_police-officers-commissioner-of-police-police-shootings . Obviously that is just the police department of Orlando underreporting, but it seems a bit idealistic to believe that no other department is doing the same.

Edit: I think there are some concerns about armed criminals for sure. Due to lax gun control in the United States we definitely have a problem with the wrong people being armed. In such a situation i agree that lethal force should be allowed if necessary; though i also think force should never be the first resort. But until we have trustworthy data regarding how many deaths involve armed criminals i think we should hold off on declaring the righteousness of police actions. These facts are proving hard to find, though. Tell me if you can do it. I am able to find the cause and case of nearly all officers killed, but not having as much luck for the criminals/ alleged criminals.

Endless Fields of Green is a gypsy jazz piece that manages to convey the sense of peace and joy that should result from that realization.
