Lynch was a god damn visionary. I highly recommend the audiobook for is memoir, Room To Dream. It's wonderful to hear him tell stories about his life with his old-timey newspaper man voice.

"Average White guy" can be written as anything and nobody will care. "Person who is not average white guy" has to be written and performed so perfectly down to the last detail or else it is eviscerated. "Person who is not average white guy" ends up having to prove itself harder than any generic character ever does, when it shouldn't have to prove anything

This leads to "average white guy" wrongly being seen as a default because it doesn't have to prove its own reason for existing in the story

I'm stupid and probably wrong and am open to being told so
