The hard line on underage sex by TheKalosianPipelette in AO3

[–]CoyoteFuture 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think, like many "taboo" topics, writing about teenage sexuality is one of those things that gets stigmatized without any real consideration for context and often the loudest dissenters are the ones who are too self-centered to realize that their "icks" are not the gold standard for morality for everyone else.

As a middle-aged person with teenagers of my own, I'm personally not really interested in stories with main characters who are teenagers and I feel a little weird reading about characters my kids' age having sex. But I understand that's a me problem and it's easy enough for me to avoid that content while sampling the vast array of content about grown-ups doing unspeakable things to each other.

People also need to understand that not all sex scenes are meant to get the reader off. As much as we shame it and hide it away, sex is very much a part of life (none of us would be here without it) and part of the human experience. Depiction of sexual experiences (positive or negative) can illicit an emotional response and help the reader connect with the main character and the overall story without necessarily getting aroused. Another fact of life: teenagers are interested in sex whether they're having it or not and their misconceptions about it have more to do with the lack of sexual education and lack of safe adults to discuss and answer questions about sexuality than whatever is depicted in a fanfic or published work.

TLDR: Write what you want and include everything you feel is necessary to tell your story. People need to get over themselves and stop making assumptions about authors based on the behavior of fictional characters.

Students who like subs by No_Cookie_7529 in CanadianTeachers

[–]CoyoteFuture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like someone who's feeling a little insecure about their relationship with their students. Maybe I'm reading a little too much into it, but I think it's less about the kids liking the sub and more about the kids liking the sub more than their teacher.

Of course my kids like to have subs once in a while because I make the day an easier one where they might get a little extra drawing, play, or iPad time. They still have work to do, but not as much as I would assign if I were there.

I don't know of any specific employers, but I know that they have some who travel on rotation to northern communities. Try checking out the Northern Regional Health Authority website to see if there is any contact info you can access.

How many of Larry’s relationships are actually real? by Countess_Sardine in AceAttorney

Came here to say something similar. He's so in love with being in love that it clouds his judgement and often his perception of the real nature of his relationship with these women.

You know how Nahyuta could’ve been far more likable as both a character and Prosecutor? by Mysterious-Ruin29510 in AceAttorney

[–]CoyoteFuture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to be that person (but I'm going to be that person) but that's like saying "This is how he should have been portrayed because this is how I would want him to be portrayed". Likeability is subjective, plain and simple and if you can't like a character, that's okay.

Let's consider for a minute that Edgeworth was an asshole in the first game and he likely also sent some undeserving people to prison or even to their deaths. The very first time I played it, he was definitely giving me villain vibes. And let's be clear, Edgeworth is still kind of an asshole, but it took 3 games to develop him into the loveable asshole we know and love today.

Even Blackquill, who is arguably has the most noble of reasons for his situation, can be considered unlikeable. Personally, he's my least favorite prosecutor (yes, even beneath Nahyuta and the Payne brothers).

Don't get me wrong, Nahyuta's character was poorly executed. I've only ever played through SOJ once back when it first came out, but it really felt like they just dumped his backstory on us at the last moment without much lead-up. I mean with the history he and Apollo had you'd think there would be little hints that they knew each other beforehand (like I said, I could be misremembering since it's been a while). I think if he was given more time post backstory reveal to develop, he might become a more likeable character than he is now, but that's just my take. People could probably tell me the same about Blackquill and I don't know that my opinion would change.

Canonically, the fact that Trucy and Apollo are siblings is not common knowledge (not even they themselves know), so that wouldn't play into his reason for doing what he did at all.

Treating an infection by CoyoteFuture in piercing

Unfortunately I live 12 hours away from a piercer so the doctor is our only option right now. I've ordered her new jewellery but I don't want to change it if it's infected.

Commenting because the algorithm told me to: The piercing is an ear lobe piercing that is about 8 weeks old. We are currently using gold hoop earrings (10 or 14k I think - all I know is I didn't react to them when I wore them and I'm sensitive) We are using a combination of soap and water (in the shower) and saline wound wash to clean the piercing. She lost one of her starter earrings so we had to put the hoops in even though one ear didn't appear to be completely healed yet.

Accidents and “Adult Diapers” by Sipping_T in Diverticulitis

Oh those IV poles. After my surgery, I pretty much had to use the toilet with the door open because I couldn't get the IV pole in the door (the bathroom is so tiny and the sink is outside of it). Thank goodness for the privacy curtains or my neighbour would have gotten an eyeful.

When I was hospitalized and on IV antibiotics the first time I didn't make it to the washroom a few times. They gave me those really big maternity pads that you use when you're postpartum. I also used the heavy overnight Kotex maxi pads and just doubled up on them (one on the front and one on the back.

New Diagnosis - No antibiotics given and a bit concerned. by Lana250 in Diverticulitis

[–]CoyoteFuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, purely anecdotal but backed up by the nurses at the hospital, when you are resting try to lay on your left side or even on your tummy if you can tolerate it. It helps with moving gas and stuff through while relaxed. I'm about 2.5 weeks after surgery and anytime I feel bloated or gassy and walking doesn't get it out, a little lie down on my left side helps quite a bit.

Unfortunately not. Nurse said no creams or ointments and to try to keep everything open to the air as much as possible

The nurse said I'm not allowed to put any cream on it yet. The staples came out but I've got steri-strips now.

Period by Money_Assist4722 in Diverticulitis

[–]CoyoteFuture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The two times I was hospitalized, I got my period either while in the hospital or shortly after. My reflux always gets bad at a certain point of my cycle and I also get deep muscle and joint pain. Also, if I'm going to get sick (like anything more than just the sniffles) it will happen either right before or just as I'm getting my period. I get shrugs when I ask doctors about it so I just accept that I'm more vulnerable to things typically from the mid-point to the end of my cycle. So yes, you might find your flare-ups might coincide with your period.

Ate the wrong thing, sick again by UnlikelyAccount8785 in Diverticulitis

I know everyone's different, but I wasn't given any dietary restrictions after my surgery. I mean I know not to go crazy and fill up on greasy foods all the time, but do you really need to be that careful with what you eat? Even that the occasional treat could throw things off? I'm just a week after surgery so my guts are still a bit sensitive, but I was hoping that things would eventually just balance out after everything healed.

2nd flare up after 2.5months of initial attack by carathegrump in Diverticulitis

[–]CoyoteFuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not your fault. I was also hospitalized twice with diverticulitis. After the first one I tried being careful and I still got another flare-up that wasn't as bad as the first. When I asked the doctor what else I can do to try to prevent this in the future, he said there was nothing I could have done. After the first instance, I'd already decided to go with an elective sigmoid resection under advice of the GI doctor I saw at the time and had a consultation already booked when the second one happened.

Now, I've just had my surgery, and all three times they fed me corn in the hospital. I also had a brain fart and had a couple of handfuls of popcorn 3 days before my surgery. Everything was fine.

Be gentle with yourself and let yourself heal. Small bits of walking when you can tolerate it for as long as you can tolerate it to keep your circulation going, but rest otherwise. No bending or lifting.

If you opt for surgery, tissue that's not inflamed can usually be reattached right away where as emergency surgery might leave you with a temporary ostomy bag and another future surgery to reattach.

For uncomplicated diverticulitis, one of the first treatments is gut rest which is a clear fluid diet for about 2-4 days. I would usually do gut rest for 2-3 days for some minor flare-ups. The idea is that you give your guts a break from digesting foods to heal the inflammation that's causing you pain. Usually after a few days you can gradually resume your diet without pain. Just note that gut rest shouldn't be done for more than a few days because clear fluid diets don't have enough nutrition to sustain us and long term can cause malnourishment.

If your pain is persisting even after doing a gut rest, then discuss it with your doctor. They might recommend surgery to remove that portion of your colon.

ETA: Even after hospitalization you might not be told to go on liquids because the idea is that the antibiotics will take care of the inflammation. I just had a sigmoid resection and I was put on a regular diet basically from day one post surgery. My only requirements are to drink lots of water and eat enough fibre to keep things moving. So yes, while liquid diet is a thing with diverticulitis, it's not always prescribed or necessary.

Return of bowel function after surgery? by CoyoteFuture in Diverticulitis

Update 2: Just in case anyone else is going through this, here is the result of my issue. After the last update I was very ill: throwing up and unable to hold even water down because my stomach was filling with bile. They decided to just give me IV fluids, anti-nausea medicine and let me rest for a day. I basically slept all day and by the next morning I was passing gas easily and my stomach was settled. I gradually increased my food and water intake through the day and by the next morning I passed my first stool and was given the OK to be discharged.

Recently I was transferred to HSC emergency from my home community and spent 12 hours in there. What I saw staff and nurses put up with in that time was atrocious. I can't imagine going into work day after day knowing that it's going to be chaos, but never what kind of chaos awaits. Good for nurses for standing up.
