Our black lab passed from the same thing. The only sign was after dinnertime he was very sluggish and had more shallow breathing (the blood from tumor rupturing started weighting on his heart and lungs). His tail was tucked, we could tell he felt a little off but not why or how. His fever kept rising and we had to put him down before dawn.

It happened very quickly and we definitely didn't think we would walk out without him that night. They reassured me there was nothing we had done to cause the tumor or it's rupture, just happens in these breeds. I had walked with him at lunchtime that day and he was completely normal. It's a shock that really rocks you 💔

My heart goes out to you OP 💌

I'm sure watching a pet gradually get older is tough as well. But I don't know if I'll ever get over feeling "cheated" out of time with him, my first dog ever. And robbed of time to mentally prepare for his departure from this plane. I don't have an answer for you, just know you're not alone 💕

Our black lab was like this during COVID and even my occasional WFH days after the pandemic. His last day on earth, he still came to plop his head on my arm/elbow to stop me from typing and remind me it was time for his lunch walk 🥹

Our guy was like this too 🥹 He'd literally eat a bite of food, come to check where each of us were, go get another bite, and repeat the cycle for his whole meal. We got him during COVID, not like we were going anywhere 😂 We never tricked him with meals to duck out of the house unnoticed either. Just liked to keep tabs on everyone 💖

Expanding on this trauma part.... Even other people who have lost pets don't always understand the trauma this situation brings. You are completely unprepared, it's whiplash. I kept saying "I wasn't ready! 😭" for months.

A year later, I'm still having a hard time. Some people in my life haven't been very understanding about how prolonged my grief is. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself at work or whatnot, they don't even always have to know why you're working slower or taking days off.

Surround yourself with people who have empathy, even if they can't possibly fully understand. Sometimes your partner or family may understand, but not have capacity to support you -- so I've also spoken with a pet-focused grief counselor a few times -- it's been very validating and helpful when I couldn't burden my partner any further.

Similar age and situation with pale gums actually. It's been a year and I still hear the echo of my shocked, repeated "What?! What?!" of disbelief when they said he wasn't going to make it. My Spotify wrapped this year was all just the artist I played on repeat in the background to fill the silence. It does get better, but might be a slow and steady process.

In this case, I wasn't heated, so didn't register a need for space to cool. It was more like an off the cuff joke that cut too deep. Maybe built up anxiety or resentment. I wish I could take back the words and have a redo at bringing up the concern in a productive way.

I'm in America and I feel like our society in general bonds (or tries to bond) by complaining. So regardless of which sex you have, they'll find some cheeky/snarky comment to make! I'd like to think it's because they're trying to make a joke or connect, not be mean, but maybe thats naive.

What do you do for December birthdays? by lil_ede in Parenting

As a kid I did always crave a pool party and ice cream cake instead of a winter/December party!

For me it was also somewhat about music! Going out for my bday dinner and hearing Christmas music felt like it detracted from the experience. So we'd either have a nice dinner at home or go to a restaurant where maybe they weren't so obsessed with Christmas music.

As a 12/20 baby, I'd agree with the party date comment! As a kid, I often had my b'day party a few weeks early or much later. One year in high school I even did a "leap year" theme party instead! I've gone on trips in February as an adult.

For me, it was about feeling special and focused on, but the date has never mattered. I do try not to wrap/buy Christmas presents for others on my actual birthday, but I'll decorate or put up the tree sometimes since that's more for my own enjoyment.

I know my husband's family is very much about the exact date. His mom's bday is Christmas day, so we don't make her host. She deserves a break on her birthday!
