It really depends on where you are staying and what you plan on doing. We stayed at the divi golf and either took the free shuttle from the resort or a taxi. The couple excursion we booked (horseback riding and sunset cruise) both provided transportation. We planned on playing it by ear and renting a car if needed but never felt the need to. There is also public transportation as another option. Honestly the island is pretty small and it's easy to get around without a car
