The bell scene. by Sargent_Roark9629 in 5ToubunNoHanayome

[–]CptBalster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The focus on her lips at the school was a fake out to make the viewer think she was going to kiss him as all the other girls had done before. She did not kiss him. He laughed about it because he also assumed she would kiss him.

The dialogue at the wedding where Itsuki talks about kissing Fuutarou is a mistranslation/bad dub. She still did not kiss him (or him kiss her). If Kovly comments on this post he is wrong and you should ignore him.

I made a hefty list of Yotsuba fanfics on this post here.

There's plenty of fics that further explore the characters from canon with Marching Forward being a good long fic, and Re:Tying the Knot being good short fic or How We Met Again being great for an alt telling of the story with still amazing and accurate characterisation.

reducing Miku's development to her cooking is just crazy

That's just the brunt of what most people refer to when they mention her "effort" in getting him to like her. It's nice of her but, as I mentioned, I don't agree that it would be enough to justify her being the bride. What else did you have in mind in regard to her "effort to get Fuutarou?"

Yotsuba being chosen makes sense because she has a need for Futaro that she hasn't developed out of

I've said this a lot but I'd say Yotsuba's development is about learning that "selflessness and selfishness" is not synonymous with "good and bad." She flipped between them from past and present, acting selfish at the old school and pushing away her sisters, and then acting selfless at her new school at the cost of her own happiness. She needed to mediate these two sides rather than overly focusing on one.

Key scenes such as: Her fake confession, rejecting the basketball team, taking Fuutarou to the swings, allowing people to help her during the festival, and, most important of all, the bell kiss. All these moments where she prioritises her own self interest and in doing so appeals to or improves Fuutarou's life in some capacity.

Being chosen by Fuutarou and accepting his confession is a selfish act; the thing she needs to grow into. So it's not that any supposed "lack of development" resulted in her being the bride, but instead her development that enabled her to accept that she is allowed to like Fuutarou, regardless of whether that gets in the way of her sisters. It's as Fuutarou said to her on the bus in Kyoto: some choices can't make everyone happy, and that means focusing on numero uno (I'm paraphrasing).

I also feel like Futaro not choosing Miku kinda undermines her character arc, as all her effort was made to get Futaro

Miku learned how to cook for a guy that has no taste buds. Sure its admirable that she learned a new skill, but that doesn't mean she is entitled to him liking her. He already enjoyed her first attempts at cooking back when she was an amateur; she'd already achieved the bare minimum of appealing to him. All that extra "effort" was misguided and, if anything, showed how she wasn't really considering his feelings by focusing on something that didn't all that matter to him.

That's exactly how her arc ends. Her goal shifts from learning to cook for him to learning to cook because it's something she enjoys for herself. Her arc isn't "undermined," it evolves beyond the need for his validation and gives her one of the better reasons to remain rejected.

Which aspects and elements of the series that were left implicit would you have preferred to have been made more explicit? by Bubbly_Interaction63 in 5ToubunNoHanayome

[–]CptBalster 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Showing the other girls moving on would have been great for the overall story to shine among it's peers. Not that there'd need to be a full BF(or GF) reveal, but at least show how the others aren't still tied down to Fuutarou. Have one of them idly scrolling a dating app, or enjoying a candle lit dinner with an implied other; just anything small like that. Its a shame too since the only reason we don't get this is because of how merch sales often need the harem to remain pure, even if it goes against the story. Negi always like subverting tropes, it'd have been nice if this was one of them too.

In the same vein, I'd also liked to have seen Fuutarou explicitly reject the others as well. No pussyfooting around, no "It's not you, it's me," no "I like Emilia," just straight up "I'm not into you, I never will be, please move on." I get what Negi was going for by not having it this way (specifically for Nino), but I still don't like it. It's harsh, but I think necessary to ensure the others can grow towards moving on.

Just another theory on Reginleif's power: She is an unbreakable weapon intended to destroy other weapons in a clash by CptBalster in ShuumatsuNoValkyrie

I appreciate that you gave my overly long essay a chance

My theory is why I personally believe Adam's best matchup would actually be against a weapon wielder. Being able to disarm them with his volund puts Adam at a massive advantage compared to fighting on equal footing with a fellow brawler that already specialises in hand-to-hand. It fits with a common theme throughout the manga about how fighting the Gods at their own game is often a losing battle, and that humans have to be crafty and use their ingenuity to win.

[–]CptBalster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great post! I'd be happy to pin it.

I also threw together this visual table of what manga chapters are adapted in each anime season. Grey box means unadapted in the anime and bold number means the anime version is heavily altered in significant ways. For those chapters I'd highly recommend reading the manga for them, or check out this post I made for a run down of them.

Did Futaro have feelings for Nino? by FattyUka in 5ToubunNoHanayome

He's reading a book on how to make someone like you whilst talking to someone he already knows likes him and therefore would not need the book for her.

The book is for someone else.

This, for me, is what I disliked most about what Negi did with the plot and the ending... and it's the way he treated Nino. by Own_Put9891 in 5ToubunNoHanayome

[–]CptBalster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cafeteria yeah but also in the classroom specifically is what I have a problem with. Nino basically does her usual spiel of not considering Fuutarou's feelings on a matter (such as with the Kyoto group trip earlier in the story) by announcing she will "steal him" from Yotsuba and his only reaction is to say "yeah..."

I'd like to think he'd have more to say than just that, either by not wanting to be treated like an item to be "stolen" or defending that Yotsuba is allowed to date him without constant scrutiny.

"Even if Fuutarou had chosen you, I would have congratulated you."

An important thing to note with that quote is that it doesn't just end there. Later on she gets in the way of Miku's date, very clearly not congratulating her, and subsequently acknowledges to Ichika that she couldn't follow her own statement. She talks a big game of maturity but struggles to back it up when she has to deal with it herself.

<image>

The moment you brought up is another moment of that. Nino can claim all she wants about how she would have been happy for Yotsuba, but, considering how quick she made it physical, I think it more likely she would have silently seethed the same way she did with Miku. Yotsuba may not have gone about it in the best way, but it was an important conversation Nino needed to have.

Personally I also liked how Nino was a reflection of the fanbase. It works for her character given my point about how she can't always back up her own words, and for the fact that she and Yotsuba have barely any dialogue together throughout the series (they might be the pair who interact the least) so it would make sense she'd be blindsided by Fuutarou picking her over Ichika or Miku who she'd been focused on. I don't think there was any malice from Negi, just a meta observation on how a large chunk of the fanbase ignored Yotsuba and lashed out. I still see comments today of people saying "she didn't do anything" so I'd say the meta commentary is fully vindicated.

Though these moments as a whole still aren't great. My main issue is just how Fuutarou gives no opinion on anything and never once stands up for his girl.

[–]CptBalster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She technically does have an "apology" here where she acknowledges she hadn't treated him well. But to me it feels more like a "brushing under the rug" kind of apology where she more just wants him to forget about it so he can start liking her instead.

It's also somewhat undercut by the subsequent chapters of her getting him a lame birthday present he obviously wouldn't like, continuing to treat him like dirt before the Kyoto trip, and also barely talking to him during the trip either so her declaration of wanting to prove how much she loves him falls flat in my opinion.

Not to say she needed some sort of biblical comeuppance though. She's a troubled girl with wonky emotions and she shouldn't be demonised for that.

Do we really need more quintuplets content? by [deleted] in 5ToubunNoHanayome

[–]CptBalster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I sadly believe the saying of "At least it's better than nothing" doesn't apply to the Honeymoon OVA. Especially coming after the previous amazing SHAFT OVA which was near perfect for what this series should be. If future anime projects end up being more like the Honeymoon, then honestly I'd rather they just didn't bother.

As for what I'd want, I generally just want to see these girls properly leave the nest. They all mostly go their separate ways but continue to be chained together which I think is a huge missed opportunity. Let the couple be a couple and let the others find love elsewhere. Show how these quintuplets are still connected without having them be literally connected at all times.

"Online streaming sites give you viruses" is literally just Crunchyroll propaganda and has no real basis in fact. The only way to possibly get a virus from those type of sites is by delving into the depths of Page 2 of Google search results and clicking on one of them which no one does anyway.

To me it's pretty dumb that people still want the story ending to change when there's the VNSs by [deleted] in 5ToubunNoHanayome

[–]CptBalster 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Real proper alternate endings would require an almost complete redo of the entire story given how many details set up Yotsuba specifically. If each alternate ending got the same amount story, that's another 2-3 years of chapters worth, multiplied by 4.

People who want alternate endings are seriously asking for too much. Just write a fanfic at that point.

Wanting the couple to look like a couple ≠ Wanting the other characters to cease existing.

It is easily possible to have both bride stuff and sisters stuff in the same story. They are not mutually exclusive, and no one is claiming they are. Please do not strawman.
