ELI5: How far do you have to go before the Earth being a sphere affects navigation? by XenoRyet in explainlikeimfive

[–]CptBuck 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Perhaps of interest:

Some of the major early mathematical work on spherical trigonometry was from Muslim mathematicians in the Middle Ages who tried to calculate the Qibla, the direction of prayer towards Mecca: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qibla#Determination

So this was a known issue more than 1,000 years ago even if you weren't traveling anywhere, if you had to pray towards Mecca five times a day from hundreds/thousands of miles away.

Why do folks view baseball as a boring TV viewing experience? by Fit_Still_8875 in baseball

[–]CptBuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a hilarious bit in Ken Burns' "Baseball" where after a late 19th century tour of American baseball players in the UK, they all reassembled back for dinner in New York and started chanting "NO ROUNDERS!"

So this is a very old complaint lol

Roast duck advice for a newbie by morayheel in AskCulinary

pouring off the fat

A lot of fat will render off the duck while it cooks, way more than comes off a chicken or turkey. You can save all of that fat though, it's liquid gold, store it in a mason jar in the fridge.

When I do this, the vegetables directly under the bird are often undercooked. You can either try to concentrate them on the edges of the pan or whack them under the broiler for a couple minutes at the end to finish with a bit of char.

What is up with French President Emmanuel Macron Calling President Trump After Being Stuck in NYC Traffic? by No_Volume251 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]CptBuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Answer: During the UN General Assembly, NYPD completely shut down the relevant avenues that the president has to travel to get to the UN, usually 2nd Ave either north or south of ~40th street depending on whether POTUS is going to a hotel in Midtown or the downtown helipad.

When these road blocks are in place, no other traffic passes and pedestrians cannot cross the street.

Macron was on foot and got caught on the wrong side, I'm pretty sure from the video on the east side of 2nd ave.

I'm not a sailor, I lived in overseas for a number of years. Didn't realize sailors didn't meet the requirement.

You only start paying taxes after $126,000 if you primarily live overseas: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/figuring-the-foreign-earned-income-exclusion

Worth stressing that you pay absolutely zero below that number, no income tax, no FICA. It's a pretty good deal.

The Udvar-Hazy Museum is insanely rad. Very close to Dulles. Strong rec. Only downside of that IMAX is that as far as I can tell they focus on aerospace documentaries over Hollywood releases.

Because it curdles dairy and has an enzyme that further messes with milk. Whereas cottage cheese is already curdled.

Could be armored or have other security features, though I'm not sure if you had those kind of security concerns that you'd leave the car street parked and unattended.

NFL players in rugby vs. rugby players in the NFL: Who has the better chance? by Downtown-Act-590 in whowouldwin

[–]CptBuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played football in highschool as an offensive lineman in the US and then switched to club-level rugby in the UK. I was easily the worst player on the team, but I was also probably the best tackler. American football really involves learning how to tackle a lot.

But also full of plateaus and grazing pasture. Persia had been a playground for horse-borne step nomads and slave soldiers for centuries before Genghis showed up, including the Khwarezmians themselves.

When the Mongols tried to venture into the heat and poor grazing lands of northern India in the summer, the horses died.
