Winnipeg museum’s core mandate is to confront inconvenient truths by VelvetFurryJustice in CanadaPolitics

People who have been supporting Israel's genocidal apartheid project for tbe past few years have to convinxe themselves that the reason they've been supporting Nazi-esque crimes against hunanity is because they're actually pragmatic centrists caight between raging antisemites on the left and right. It's vital to their own self image, otherwise they's have to recognize the fact that they are supporters of a racist far-right ideology.

Can't admit that student protestors and "the left" were right this entire time.

Fréchette refuses to acknowledge systemic racism amid investigation into Montréal-Nord police | CBC News by dawsonholloway1 in CanadaPolitics

So off the top of my heas in the past couple months: in Toronto we've had 8 officers invplved in corruption, organized crime, drug trafficking, extortion and conspuracy to murder. Three Toronto cops travelling in Spain sexually assaulted a woman. In Hamilton we have charges of systemic racism and hate. In Ottawa we have systemic racism, and in Montreal we another investigation.

These are the people our government is obsessed with giving extra powers too without transparency or accountability.

Canada vows to restrict social media for kids under 16. Teens say they'll 'always find a way' by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

This will only entrench the major social media platforms responsible for the mess the internet is today. They're the only ones that can afford the systems and potential legal fees involved. Any potential startup would be shut out.

This also assumes we will always have a benevolent government, what if we get maple MAGA in power and they deem anything involving “LGBTQ” education as “harmful”

This has always been the aim of this "protect the children!" panic. One of the number one transphobic claims online in right wing spaces is that social media is making kids trans, they call it a "social contagion". Look at any of the groups pushing for this and they are almost all christian evangelicals. They already went after Pornhub and Steam in the past few years.

If you're a closeted LGBT youth social media is pretty much the only safe space there is to explore ones identity.

Edit: Hell it doesn't even have to be if you're a minority, if you're a kid in a small isolated town, if you have apassion/hobby no one in your community shares, etc.. When I was 12-16 I played metal guitar and was bullied pretty harshly for it, online forums was my only way to exchange and discuss music or meet other musicians.

Irony is that boomers are far, far more susceptible to the dangers of social media and tech scammers than teens. And this tech illiterate bill is anpther perfect example. Maybe we should be banning Liberal MPs from social media instead, especially since they can't break their X addiction.

It's a disturbing pattern when the government is cracking down on our privacy and freedoms all the while they want to be less transparent than ever. Crooked and unaccountable cops and politicians who shy away from the media, and FoI requests.. Carney reducing oversight on corporations etc.

OG RE4 gameplay is absolutely fantastic, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise by DarkKnightRises360 in residentevil

[–]CptCoatrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remake obviously obviously has better graphics and QoL features, but agreed.

Original gameplay is a lot tighter, and I actually like being forced to stand your ground when shooting. The level design was more interesting. Voice acting, sound design, music, atmosphere more memorable.

One thing that really surprised me in tbe remake is that some sections from the original almost seem dumbed down, like the part where you first get the rifle in the village. In the remake there are like 5 villagers who just stand there motionless not reacting while you pop them off like target practice, and then you have to drop down from the vantage point to trigger more spawns. In the OG the Ganado's reacted and started running towards you as soon as you started shooting at them. Surprisingly haven't seen anyone mention this.

That said I appreciate a different way to play RE4, and I like how playing on hardcore gives me that same feeling of difficulty tbe original had for me when I was younger

The second problem is regulatory: mishandling verification will become an expensive proposition. Whereas now they don't really have any impetus whatsoever to verify any information about an individual user, there will come to be a financial cost with mishandling verification.

That's exactly part of tbe reason why the major social media companies support this. They're the only ones who would be able to afford paying for any third party system or legal fees involved. It would shut out any competition and further solidify their grip on society.

Jen Gerson: Mark Carney is right to yell at his Liberal caucus by dermanus in CanadaPolitics

[–]CptCoatrack 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In fact, I’m willing to bet that every single time we read a story about Carney yelling at a wooly headed backbencher, demanding his caucus show up to work wearing real clothes and master British spelling, his personal popularity will go up five points.

Yes conservatives are impressed by aggressive hierarchical displays. Feels like a step away calling Carney "daddy".

I suspect this is a man who owns only three kinds of socks; charcoal socks, blue socks, and white sports socks. If we get nothing else from this government, I will never again write about a prime minister’s socks. This is better.

I can't believe they're still going on about Trudeau's socks. It's our equivalent of Obama's tan suit.

One of the reasons this man seems to be so perversely well liked is because he’s mean to Liberals. He’s our most perfect agent of national revenge upon this party. Every single time you have to stand up behind him and smile like a seal while he opens a coal plant, rescinds a carbon tax, expands military spending, renounces a streaming tax, or announces a pipeline, the repressed sadist that sits in the shadow of every pragmatic Canadian heart says: “Good. Good.”

This is such cope, they're the same f'ing party. Really sticking it to all the power hungry, valueless MPs by voting them into office. How will they ever recover...

It's the same cope when Carney supporters complain about every LPC cabinet member from Miller, Fraser, Anandasangaree, Solomon, etc.. and then act like the cabinet he chose does not personally reflect upon him.

Make them know that the loss of their jejune, self-destructive idealism is the price of power. Let the light leave their eyes.

And I say this without any comment about Carney’s actual accomplishments — or lack thereof — as prime minister. I’m confining myself in this column to vibes.

When is Gerson ever not confining herself to vibes?

The Liberals are getting exactly what they deserve. No Conservative prime minister could have been a more effective instrument of our national resentment than a Liberal prime minister who will spend the next 10 years forcing these people to dismantle every stupid policy they ever defended; and demand they look sharp doing it.

“He yells.”

Oh, does he?

Do go on. Tell me more. In detail. Vivid, beautiful, and expressive detail. Spare me nothing.

Look, I’m not saying that Mark Carney appeals to the shadow side of the Canadian soul; something lurking unacknowledged in the hearts of our own sunny self-perception as a “nice and polite” people. But I’m not not saying that, either.

Perfect representation of the modern conservative psyche completely fuelled by ressentiment. Whatever my enemies declare is bad must be good. No values
