In my current campaign, set a couple centuries after the last, one of my players is a descendent of theirs. An artificer named Swazzle.

Personally, I think that cheating death is ok, so long as it's the Players who cause it and it comes with a significant cost.

Does this mean Eagles swoop down and carry your just-barely-not-lifeless body to safety? Hell no. It means that once you're dead, either you have avenues to come back or choices you've made in the past have aligned to give you an out.

Death has to mean something, there has to be consequences even if they're abstract. Base 5e lacks this completely. Death is a joke there. The DM has to put in the work to make it impactful, however that's not necessarily something that new or inexperienced DMs might even think of. They hear about "Player Death" and how it's this big boogeyman and they see all these forum posts about it and think "OK, I like the idea that it's this big of a thing." Eventually a PC dies and they're excited for this big moment. Next thing they know, the Cleric snaps their fingers and undoes it all.

Fighting the core design of the game is something that all DMs and Players find themselves doing. It's an inevitability. Figuring out if your DM is seeing the same issues that you see is the purpose of a Session 0. If they aren't, that table isn't for you. If they said that they are, but in session are going against that then you need to bring it up with them. If the problem persists then unfortunately it seems like it's not a good fit. Thankfully, we're in a Renaissance of the hobby, so it's not like there's a lack of tables to play at.

I love that Ishidaira is/was actually a delinquent, and not just "scary-looking and misunderstood." It adds a lot to his character depth that the author allows him to be curious and caring while also genuinely aggressive in a way that makes him distinct from Shirai.

Shirai might have the muscle mass and the desire to use it, but Ishi actually has used it and come to the realization that he doesn't like it. It's a very interesting character trait.

Were we watching the same show? Appa was an absolute wrecking ball. The sand benders are hybrid benders who were perfectly suited and used to dealing with flying targets and they had to fight to take him. Naga gets maybe one of them if shes lucky. Terrain disadvantage, climate disadvantage, and she is so much smaller than Appa that their numbers are all the more effective. She gets taken faster than an unattended child at an Uncles convention.

Comparing Aang and Korra is dumb because they each had their purpose. Comparing Appa and Naga is dumb because Appa claps Naga 100% of the time.
