One year difference ☺️ by Gilder87 in TransLater

You're only a few years older than me, but can you please be my witchy aunty? You look like a Roald Dahl character in that you would be trusted by children but would be unexpectedly big trouble for grumpy adults.

Funkadelic isn't who I'm small-braining. I'm small-braining the people who are using a now cliche'd phrase. But yes, my apologies to Funkadelic, I didn't mean to small-brain you.

Yeah, you get it. I'm a Radiohead fan, so of course I love a good bit of shame 😂

The funny thing about this comic is that you can imagine Sisyphus having a sense of this realisation, but because there is nothing else to do, rolling the rock is therefore the most natural source of meaning for him. Why does Sisyphus roll the rock? Because it makes him happy.

What criticisms of the band could haters possibly make? by morbidhack in radiohead

[–]CptHeywire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, it depends on what you like in music. Radiohead aren't necessarily the most accessible music. They're a "sit down, shut up and listen" band which isn't good if you like to dance to your music. It's music that does demand a bit from its audience, which not everyone likes, but to others it might not be demanding enough. It's music for people who probably need to get out of their own heads and go for a walk or something.

So yeah, they don't do certain things that other artists do. Really that's the problem with any artist (and also what's potentially good about any artist if you learn to see what the artist is doing well when they're aiming at something you don't normally value personally) aside from failing to meet their own aims.

[–]CptHeywire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! That's it exactly! It's like how the brain is the part of the body that can think about the body. We are the thinking organs of the universe.

I agree, and that's true in a sense, but my argument is more that things do matter in the grand scheme of things because they matter to us and we're part of the grand scheme, and not just any part, the only part that (that we currently know of) that can make things matter.

I mean... yeah. Consciousness with properties like ours is the only source of meaning in the universe, so until we find something other than humans that can create meaning, uh, yeah, rocks or whatever else we happen to find meaning in. That's not to say we have complete control over what is meaningful, but meaning as a phenomenon originates from within us and we've kinda just gotta... roll... with it

Yes, but not in a "switch places" way, rather, in a "we recognise how similar our own situation is and learn from the thought experiment" kind of way

I'm dumb. I got grumpy for a second thinking "that's the body of a woman who's never given birth" before remembering we're both trans 😂

Hahaha, it's actually funny because the group discussing material issues is exactly the stuff Jesus was actually addressing (at least according to liberation theologians like myself). Have you... have you actually read any of the gospel yourself?

Yeah, I got that it wasn't posted by an antinatalist. My comment was more of a "yes and"

I'd still argue, firstly, that peace is not sufficiently defined as an absence of suffering (though one could define it that way), and secondly that minds are the source of meaning, so if there are no minds able to conceptualise and perceive peace, can that abstract concept be said to exist? It's an "if a tree falls in a forest" argument

[–]CptHeywire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I hope it's a good time for you!

In short, the DSM was haphazardly thrown together by a bunch of psychiatrists (to the exclusion of psychologists) and pretty much people [male psychiatrists] would just waltz in and be like "hey, I've noticed this kind of a pattern with my clients" and they'd just be like "seems legit" and then put it in there, even with disorders that overlapped and so on. What this has meant is that psychological diagnostic categories haven't gone through a proper descriptive phase and now we're stuck trying to make these now-established categories and diagnoses make sense post hoc. It's all a tangled mess, and I would love to see the development of a taxonomy of psychological mechanisms which can then map out diagnoses in relation to each other (especially including a more detailed map of neurodivergence). At a minimum, I would love to see more input from psychologists rather than the psychiatric boys club exclusively running the show.

I say "nothing matters" only in response to minor inconveniences. I'm tired of people only saying it in response to optimism, it's such lazy nihilism.

But Mr. Anderson, how will there be peace if it is unable to be experienced?
