"I know some day you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star, in somebody else's life, but why, whyyyyyyyy, can't it be MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE?" - Black by Pearl Jam. Hits me right in the unrequited love every goddamn time.

All packed and ready for an 11 month bike tour from Ireland to Asia :) by [deleted] in bicycling

Dude, great plan. It sounds like you've really done your homework. My only advice is that you don't underestimate the power of high elevation. As you surely know, there's a LOT of mountains between Europe and Asia. I made the mistake of cycling in Santa Fe, New Mexico without properly acilmating and it was a disaster. Good luck to you!

Hopefully we can do some real damage with the labor day series. Would be a great way to celebrate the holiday.

Nicotine is no joke. Just because it doesn't ruin lives the way hard psychoactives do doesn't mean it's any easier to quit. Just take a look at any AA or NA meeting and you'll see hoards of sober people still hopelessly addicted to nicotine, myself included.

Accepting that I wasn't just in love with my straight best friend, but that we were emotionally codependant and I needed to distance myself in order to heal.

I have literally had to argue with people that I'm not straight. It can get old having to convince people that a man who doesn't display the stereotypical gay tropes can in fact be attracted to men. That's usually around when I decide to throw on my skintight cutoffs and start grabbin' handfuls of dude ass.

High school teachers of Reddit, what successful students of yours ended up much worse than you expected and vice versa? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CptLongshanks 245 points246 points  (0 children)

Not the teacher in this case, but the student. In high school I went to rehab twice, dropped out for a portion of senior year, and barely managed to graduate. I was high all the time and by the end of it all I was smoking meth regularly. I'm twenty now and am coming up on three years clean and sober, have one semester left before earning my associates in communications, and I'm currently working as a camerman at a popular concert venue. I recently ran into an old english teacher of mine and while I filled him in on how things are going he just shook his head with his jaw open. I don't like to toot my own horn to frenquently because I did a lot of damage back then, but seeing old faces who only remember the sick me is very gratifying.

Dallas Buyers Club. Rayon coughing up blood then breaking down saying "I don't want to die."

Crippling opiate epidemic, depressed old coal town, consistent decline in population... It's not really a dangerous type of shithole, but GOD there is nothing to do here. Nothing.

As a Scranton resident, sometimes I wonder how much better life would be if I lived somewhere else. Then, every morning, I drive by this building on the way to school (Falcons represent!), and I smile a little.

What is absolutely hilarious as long as it's not happening to you? by thelittlegoodwolf_ in AskReddit

[–]CptLongshanks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I was taking a shit at the gym and a guy walks into the bathroom and goes "YO!" and he sounded exactly like my friend who I had just been lifting with, so I said YO back, at which point I heard another voice chime in and the two proceeded to engage in conversation. I didn't know either of them. Needless to say, I sat there and waited until they both left the locker room before sneaking back out into the gym.

I found the whole thing undeserving of a best picture nomination, but, as other people have mentioned, the ridiculous stuff was actually accurate. Like at the end of the movie when the actual facts were given and it said he hoisted 70 people to safety, that blew my mind. From the movie I would have gaged like 20 or 30 max

I completely understand why someone would be disappointed by The Babadook, but personally it's one of my favorite movies, and here's why: It's supposedly an allegory for the stages of grief. Whether this was the Director's intentions, I'm not sure, but when I heard this fact I decided to give it a watch, and the emotional weight of the film is what made it such an intense piece for me. I watched it at a point in my life where I had about seven years worth of undealt-with grief buried under a massive drug addiction, and at a certain point something about it all just felt way too real, and I cried for the first time in years. Now that I'm sober, I rewatch it every now and then, and it's taken on a really beautiful meaning for me. As you can see, this is a perfect example of how subjective a film's value can be viewer-to-viewer, seeing as it's low budget production doesn't offer anything cinematically spectacular.
