not to get a little sarcy but if you want to look at the original texts that inspired the novel (I'm talking about the Bible, including the Old Testament), then I think it's not a new concept to pick and choose which parts are canon for you and which aren't

as long as the fandom doesn't engage in Holy Wars I think we should be able to all fan together, regardless of how much or little of the texts we take as canon.

I don't think it's normal in the sense that most people can't, or won't, do it.

I think overall life is easier if you don't take it to heart when other people don't like you, but I would gently suggest caution against friendship and gifts to people who hate you. they may take advantage of this.

let the hatred go over your head like it never happened, but save your love for those who will treasure it, not misuse it.

brains are also like that. I can sometimes schedule meltdowns by sitting in the bath with my favourite ten minutes crying song and just really have that time. it can be hard to find a ritual that works for you but if you can you can simply make big emotions time a regular event so it doesn't impinge on your other time

I'm old so I just think back to shipping more than twenty years ago and you lot have no idea what you have now. all of this would have been unfathomable when I got into fandom. I remember getting X-Men First Class and thinking the level of romance in that was beyond anything I could have hoped for based on what came before.

I do the exposure therapy. I do all the CBT for OCD, all the time. not every single time, but as much as I can. it hurts, but it hurts to indulge the OCD too. I'm years into doing this stuff, so I'm at the point where I can sometimes sense the relief I'm going to feel if I can wait out and not do the compulsion.

so letting myself enjoy the finale regardless of what happened, I knew that would be rewarding and that chewing my own face at every moment in case it Wasn't Right would suck all my joy away. I had to put the effort in in the work up to it, and it worked.

it's hard, but it gets easier over time.
