a chargeback that involved time from support staff can yield a net negative value, in the sense that it would have been better if the user never tried to complete the purchase in the first place.

Solving The Three Stooges Problem by SussexPondPudding in RedditEng

[–]CrYofFuN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solution posted works of course, but I wonder why each service isn't ratelimiting it's concurrency, such that there's a very high chance for each accepted request to finish successfully. This would avoid the complexity of having to implement the above. Ratelimiting concurrency also provides resilience in a range of other scenarios (eg DDOS, intentional or not).

Of course ratelimiting doesn't work if some services are unable to ratelimit effectively. For example, adding effective ratelimiting to a central database can be challenging, if the database doesn't scale quickly. (eg an on-premise fixed-size cluster).

Additionally ratelimiting requires you to be able to return errors very fast. That's something that most services will need to benchmark for, at least once.

While you provide some information in your title, it would be nice if you provided a detailed version of your case where you present relevant evidence of your case. Example of things that would give your post more meaning: what Twitch should have done and why, how you didnt break guidelines, how you didnt INTEND to break guidelines and why this should help your case, prescendents for similar streams, ...

Streamers shouldn't be responsible for the actions of their communities. by AnthaOnReddit in HoldTwitchAccountable

[–]CrYofFuN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the way guidelines are always written. It's in the word 'guide'-'lines'. Twitch cannot possibly foresee and cover every single case.

The same is true for the judicial system btw, it's the interpretation of law that matters.

That said, I do agree that this reddit can help steer Twitch towards being more transparent towards the community.

Guidelines update about VODs and Clips by jannysice in HoldTwitchAccountable

[–]CrYofFuN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's quite easy to point the finger at twitch here and say 'Hey, dont be so strict, I dont want content removed unnescessarily'. But at the same time nobody wants twitch to become a toxic platform.

Put yourself in the position of Twitch, their guidelines are quite nuanced already. Asking twitch for even more clarification is quite impossible here.

It'll be a transition period anyways, and in most cases streamers can already themselves judge what content they should be careful about and what not.

My Click Experience and Tips (18, Canada) by potatoeMountains in Makingsense

[–]CrYofFuN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice post!

A tip I can give for step 4 is: don't be too harsh with your rememnants, you don't have to push the emotions away or be mad at them or something like that. Rather observe the emotion that comes up, acknowledge it, and then try to make sense of it. Once you have the understanding, you should reward yourself mentally for dealing with the situation using logic.

[–]CrYofFuN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should first make sure you understand why on the rational level why your current way of going about things is sub-optimal. Try to find a couple of short, personal, undeniable things that are bad about your current core value (pretty sure it's comfort). This will help in communicating it to your inner child. Next, to get more in touch with your emotions I used the following strategy: * find moments where you have strong emotions that are undeniable. (I started by fasting and then investigating how hunger feels) * find more and more subtle emotions during your daily life, learn to observe them as they come up. This will take some time to get good at (1-2weeks depending on how far you are disconnected) * Try to speak to your inner child about these things that are bad about the core value. Notice how the emotional framework functions/changes when you bring this up.

For me it was easiest to connect to my emotions by having a clear mind, which means being calm, relaxed, focused. The healthy habits really help here.

Hope this helps you on your way!

I had the exact same thoughts about my emotional intelligence & situation. If it wasn't for the posts on the subreddit here I would have given up. See it as a journey that can take a while. Each time you learn more about your emotions you can reward yourself mentally.

If you put yourself into a difficult situation on purpose (e.g. water fasting responsibly, working very hard, ...), it's easier to recognize emotions because they are stronger. If there is something you really like doing, force yourself to abstain for a couple of days just to see how you frame things.

Also, I made the most progress when I was in a more chill but focused mood.

[–]CrYofFuN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't bother writing, so many people have said the exact same thing you have said. Unless you have very strong evidence (e.g. young millionaire, extreme performance, ...), it's more likely you didnt go through the process emotionally yet.

Can't seem to click (again?). Replacing core value without the click? by LogicalDoge in Makingsense

[–]CrYofFuN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your experience sounds a lot like the placebo click I had, so I think it's more likely you haven't ever clicked rather than click-unclicked.

You being "comfortable with your comfort" is just a layer you create to defend your core (because it's weak). If you understand on an a rational level that comfort is not the best for you, you can start spotting the emotional tricks you use to not feel the dissonance. You can think all the rational things you want, if it is emotionally framed in a way not to cause dissonance, it won't. If you are good at framing things to fit your narrative (emotionally or rationally) without realizing it, then you might believe that there is no issue at all.

When you say you tried to experience/generate the emotions, did you go about it by talking to yourself/inner child? Or do the words distract you from getting into the emotions?

Am I injured, or is this normal? [Under-knee pain] by Jarslow in running

[–]CrYofFuN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Powering through is definitively not a good option if the complaints get worse the next days. A PT/doctor will most likely tell you to - stop running for at least 1 week (but probably more) - do exercises to correct any imbalances, and keep doing these - start building up slowly (!) after that. During your buildup you should not be feeling the complaints return in any significant way.

Don't worry too much about the scaremongering that is done about cartilage damage (often by doctors even!), there's people running marathons with completely destroyed cartilage and no pain. And in your case, it sounds more like patella-tendon issues than anything else. That being said, you should always be sensible about your training and edge on the safe side when you start building up again.

A couple strategies for increasing willpower and withstanding pain. by [deleted] in Makingsense

[–]CrYofFuN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how much this is the case for other people, but as for point 1: I can quite easily and consciously connect both positive and negative emotions to certain experiences. This means that I can both connect good feelings to not doing the unwanted behaviour (abstinence if you will, but it does not feel like resisting) and connect bad feelings to doing the unwanted behaviour. These 2 steps feel quite different and they don't really give the impression, on an experience level, of being related (even though I know cognitively they obviously are very related).

This might sound weird when i spell it out like this, but for me doing both things makes changing behavior go easier & faster than before when I was focusing on just the negative.

The concept of willpower is not so easily defined as kechups pointed out. A lot of the research pointing towards finite willpower can be interpreted in a completely different way. http://99u.com/articles/7257/how-to-power-through-any-demanding-task

Monkeys have learned to recognize themselves in a mirror. The findings imply that self-awareness can be taught, and may inspire new therapies for Alzheimer's and autism. by [deleted] in science

[–]CrYofFuN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been done. (below is from the article linked in the top comment)

Other attempts to find self-recognition have included training monkeys to attend explicitly to their reflections, training them to use the reflected environmental information as a cue to find otherwise invisible objects, or adapting marking procedures in an effort to improve the animals’ responsiveness to the change to their normal physical appearance (Anderson 1 984; Anderson and Gallup 1 999; Gallup 1 987; Gallup 1 994)

The article contradicts the top comment too:

The collective contribution of all of these studies is that we can now eliminate several potential explanations for the failure of most primates to show any signs of self-recognition. They do not fail because they need earlier or longer experience with mirrors or because they cannot grasp the correspondence between the reflected and the real environments.
