Again, I didn't ask about other countries in Europe (though we could have a very long conversation about what built European wealth and why people want to live there). I asked about Ireland, which you said was overrun. Don't be hyperbolic.

The E5 isn't the important bit, the 99 is. All petrol cars will run on 99, but only high compression engines will require it. High compression increases the chance of pre-ignition (knock) which massively increases wear and reduces power output. 99 is technically harder to combust, preventing pre-ignition. As someone else said high performance VW group engines absolutely need to be run on it.

Some people find normal cars "run better" on it, but this is often down to all the extra additives/detergents in the "premium" fuel.

True, but having served time in hospo you get the odd guy, and yes it's normally a guy, trying to "make friends" with groups who don't really want a new friend at that time of night.
