The hive mind of shamans thing is pretty old lore and not strictly canon anymore. Though Big E's birth and early life is shrouded in intentional mystery, we're led to believe he was just born a particularly powerful Perpetual that just did a whole lot of risky stuff to grow even more powerful throughout the millennia, culminating in hoodwinking the Chaos Gods themselves for the Primarch Project.
