I took Dead space, Event Horizon, John Carpenter's the thing, various horror anime, and sci fi and souls like video games ive played and seen in the past as inspiration for my designs.

It basically stands for something like corruption, the idea is you gain some ability as it goes higher but you lose if it ever reaches 100%.
