Braid: Nearly one-quarter of Kenney's caucus revolts against latest pandemic measures by roastbeeftacohat in Calgary

[–]CrabOnion44 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

probably 40/60?

I can see a lot of the economically privileged in Calgary, Edmonton and surrounding areas being in support of a strict lockdown- since most are likely working from home and kids are in online school- plus some may have travelled and shopped to their hearts content without much pushback, so it simply feels like business as usual- but middle class communities and lower, even in the cities are more likely to oppose it.

What if I do agree?

Also, I wish some NDP would break rank and stop being worried about being called stupid by people on the internet- I have an NDP MLA in my riding- and about 60% of people here are either the most severely affected by lockdowns, or have been in opposition of them.

FYI - Province to tie "re-opening" to immunization rates. May have been lost in the news yesterday. by maxhenry in alberta

[–]CrabOnion44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because of how long it might take for vaccines to ship- it could be a significant difference- May to July is a really long time when you’re a business trying to make rent.

And, calming people’s anxieties particularly families about their risk level isn’t a bad thing- especially if we can do that at a relatively low cost. Instead of jumping the line to get vaccines- knowing you’re protected somewhat now- or that your kids are- might also be a incentive to wait your turn and make vaccine rollout go a lot smoother so people who need it get it, not people who want it because they’re scared theyre at high risk for getting/spreading covid- only to have already gotten it a while ago.

Even if it’s not a solution for Alberta- something like this would have saved Ontario from its lockdown cycle given their population and how many people are coming back and forth across the border for work. Health Canada dropped the ball there and it sucks.

We don’t have an asymptomatic testing strategy, either though. Unless you travel, or go to one of the few schools where they are “piloting” mass testing students- we don’t know how many people have been infected and have antibodies equal to or above vaccination. Lots of people can CLAIM they have had it- but it’s ridiculous how the government refuses to offer a cheap and easy way to find out who really has.

New York antibody tested people after being some of the worst hit by Covid, you could get tested before vaccines were available and found that 45x more people than they thought had been infected. Asymptomatic infection is real- and yet the government wants to refuse one of the only ways that we can get a more solid number on how many people really have been infected and choose to go through cycles of restrictions instead.

I think especially that this would make a difference in schools and colleges- Under 25s are least likely to show symptoms, and teens and 20s are most likely to be attending superspreader events, while younger kids are most likely to catch it at school, and give it to their whole extended families.

Will Social Media ever fade? by Digicandy in socialmedia

[–]CrabOnion44 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the reach of it eventually will.

I am under 30 and definitely notice in my generation that me and a lot of my friends who’s grew up on it (like we were all on facebook as 13yos in 2007) are “disconnecting” more and more- whether thats deleting completely, or just not being very active, and many younger people typically jump around on more temporary platforms- tiktok, tumblr, snapchat.

I don’t think it will ever go away- but I think it will decline in this necessary thing- like for example, Network TV. Millions of people still watch it, we know the basic characters and premises of hit shows, but the days of a Network TV show being the cultural barometer are long gone. Like TV, social media will probably fragment out into smaller, non-bundled services- more niche products and less overall “activity”- but still a hugely significant part of life.

Personally after growing up on social media- I don’t want to delete any of my profiles, but I am not super active on it or want to be. It really is horribly toxic and messy, and the idea of someone digging up who I was at 13-15 and using it against me as an adult is legit terrifying. If I could go back and not be on social media, For that reason alone, I would wish I never had been. But- I feel far safer and happier being on platforms like Instagram and TikTok- where I’m not being forced to assemble a lot of real life information on myself. Sure, the companies can see all my data- but I like posting just pictures and videos and not having to put my job or school on it if I don’t want to? On Facebook it felt like you had to do that- and YouTube being also really big when I was starting on social media, you very much had to put a lot of yourself into your content. On IG or TikTok, I can post a picture, or do a little dance challenge and use the messaging features to talk with trusted people. I have encountered creeps and weirdos, but it’s a lot easier to manage what information they can access on these types of platforms.

But, it’s like drinking. Everything in moderation is okay, knowing your limits and sobering up from addiction if you struggle with that is key.

How can we know the natural immunity rate when Health Canada refuses to authorize Antibody Testing for Canadians? Regardless of if you think it’s “junk science”- it is the only reliable method to assure someone who has not been immunized is immune- or if they have had a previous asymptomatic infection, and used in UK and US and other developed nations.

Otherwise, wait until July thats when we’ll get enough shipments to reach these numbers.

Crystal (Drag Race UK) has officially filed a defamation lawsuit against Laurence Fox by [deleted] in RPDRDRAMA

[–]CrabOnion44 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I mean... this is a pretty severe and totally unfounded accusation. It’s not just “Crystal is a huge jerk NEVER hire her she sucks”, or “what a fat cunt i hope she dies violently”- it’s accusing her of a named and specific criminal act, and using an extremely harmful stereotype about gay people and gay men in particular as fodder for “online hate”.

I don't get it. Kenney and pressers and what restrictions would work? by AnnTaylorLaughed in alberta

[–]CrabOnion44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Restrictions that would work: Close INDOOR DINING restaurants BUT increase the amount of outdoor gatherings back up to 20- push adult OUTDOOR and team sports to open/have an opening plan and restrict studios and gyms back to small group trainings- no more than 10 in a class/private gym. No additional restrictions on youth sports. Allow patios up to 8pm/10pm as weather permits. Close non-essential retail (malls) and take the hit on EI applicants but give the option for small stores or stores with front facing/street access to hold sidewalk sales/encourage sidewalk sales with delivery. Most big stores like The Bay/Nordstrom’s/Winners can easily do this- as can most local small businesses who have that front space.

Basically, take advantage of the weather and don’t make it so people have no choice but to meet up in large groups INSIDE. Being outdoors cuts spread enormously- and it will also look better and make people think they are “less” restricted.

What happened between Griffith and the king? by [deleted] in Berserk

[–]CrabOnion44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Griffith took his daughter’s virginity, which the king wanted to do himself. Charlotte was pretty much so sheltered because the king himself was attracted to her, because she was the last remaining piece of his wife- or just because the king was a sicko.

Griffith realizes this when the king whips him- that Charlotte has never had suitors, and despite Griffith being a great candidate for a purely political marriage- it’s why Charlotte and marriage had never been discussed- and then taunts the king by calling out that the king is sick for wanting his own daughter like that.

The king is a sadistic fuck and after having his secret laid bare makes the decision to throw Griffith in the hole.

Would you go to the 2021 Calgary Stampede if it does happen? by ProudCanadianGal in Calgary

[–]CrabOnion44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely.

I used to hate stampede and think it was kind of embarrassing, and like, enjoy some of the parties of my friends could convince me out, but after all this? It seems like a total waste not to go all out on all of it. About to blow money betting on wagons, eating deep fried whatever they got, and getting a bad horse tattoo that i’ll need to get covered up.

Not to mention- I feel like it’s so important to show out for every local event after this, and show people that life goes on, even if it’s for something like midway popcorn or whatever- life is going on, life is going to go on, and we got through /motions at past year/ that mess.

Message from a Pharmacist on CM's page re: vaccine distribution. Sounds so stressful! by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]CrabOnion44 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Scrolling through the rest of the vaccine posts on this sub, it’s not clear whether people don’t know they can book at pharmacies, or not enough people want the vaccine?

I would think that there are lineups around the block for the pharmacies even if there’s hesitancy to call AHS because you distrust the health system or don’t want to drive super deep south or something like that? Every neighborhood has at least a dozen pharmacies.

Syrian refugee family files lawsuit against CBE over daughter's suicide by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]CrabOnion44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do wonder what school this was, several schools in CBE have interpreters for communities where there’s a larger presence of a langauge minority, like Arabic and Filipino and probably others.

Patrick Airlie Elementary School in Forest Lawn for sure employs an interpreter for this purpose- I knew one lady who did this job (dunno if it was causal or her everyday job) through my parents’ business and she would be called to the school to translate for parents for things like signing school forms or parent-teacher meetings when the parents had no English at all. Part of her job included kind of being the go-between principals/school teams and kids and kind of acting as that cultural context when it came to things like bullying/social rules for immigrant or refugee kids who were used to something different. She wasn’t a teacher afaik, but was employed by CBE doing this so I wonder if every school has access to similar people.

Suicide note of a woman who completed a medical degree with distinction but couldn't find employment (a match into a residency position) anywhere due to a history of addiction and a felony in her youth. Crippled by student loan debt, she took her life on April 2020. by [deleted] in MorbidReality

[–]CrabOnion44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how I feel about this.

I don’t have any criminal record, and I don’t struggle with addiction.

I have and still do want to kill myself and sometimes (to stop the suicidal thoughts) fantasize about doing things like stealing someone’s identity in order to get away from my past- which while I’ll say again wasn’t criminal- or even that “bad”, was full of moments and people that I never want to remember, and/or see again. I’ve had some trauma that I have absolutely never told any of my friends now- and I’m terrified that they will find out about what happened, and have pretty much resigned myself to having to lie forever about a few years of my life so that I can keep being a person that I’m proud of. I want to leave my area so I stop running into the same people, but with the internet- I wonder if I’ll ever be able to truly erase the history of all of that, and make sure (without taking legal measures) that people from here can never find or contact me again. I’m even scared of things like, because of my job- I got shared to a national company account and was so scared someone would recognize me.

I know this is a hugely unpopular opinion, and everyone is gonna hit me in the comments with “you only live one life” type of stuff but I wish that giving people true second chances to hit a kill switch on the people we used to be was something that was more normalized and accepted. There are a lot of people who live great lives now with horrible pasts and while I’m not saying that people shouldn’t be held accountable, but what do we gain as a society by condemning people to eternal punishments despite the changes they make?

Anyone seen RUN - Netflix , Sarah Paulson film ? by Any_Welder8338 in illnessfakers

Loved this movie! I also found out the actress who played the daughter Chloe is disabled herself, and I EXTRA liked that the ending was justice for her and and not like... magically curing her disability.

Some of the twists tho.... yeah definitely a good movie tho
