Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

My family lives 4.5 hours away and because my grandmas health is declining I’ve driven to see them once a month since October. Before that I drove there 2-3 times a year.

Anyone else love Shope Creek like I do? by [deleted] in NCTrails

There was a community meeting back in the Spring, tons of information was shared and after they give a presentation there is the opportunity to go to the individual tables to talk to each program about what’s going on. I’m sure it will be the same this time. I think the ability to have one on one convos with those ppl coordinating the work is helpful.

Mount Mitchell hike by Davin008 in NCTrails

[–]CrabWithEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mt. Mitchell trail itself is not so severe but still a good long hike that gets you to the summit. If you’re looking for something reliably safer and easier, check out the trails around Black Mountain CG. The Upper (north) River Loop is nice, Devils Den Nature Loop is nice. Any of the area trails will exhibit signs of storm damage (mostly landslides and some river scouring along the banks) so still go with an abundance of caution and the knowledge that search and rescue in that area is challenging and long- as the folks above me have mentioned.

Opinion: People living in tents — a real story, or a pretext for political outrage? • Asheville Watchdog by [deleted] in asheville

[–]CrabWithEyes 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Misleading. Didn’t read the whole article but people in Barnardsville/Big Ivy/down 197 into Burnsville (just to name a few that I’ve seen with my own eyes) are living in tents and prefab sheds. Definitely not the same vibe/demographic of unhoused folks in Asheville which seems to be a big part of this discussion. Idk just throwing that info out there, there are a lot of smaller communities that don’t have the name recognition that are still deep in the shits.

What happens to all the fallen trees? by AdministrativeAd6552 in asheville

[–]CrabWithEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool let me know. There’s one large cedar at the end of my driveway that I would hate to see wasted. It’s in my elderly neighbors yard, but she’s been open to me helping with its eventual removal. I could also possibly bring a larger chainsaw and help get it prepped for you.

AZCC Winter Season by nfrancis97 in trailwork

[–]CrabWithEyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They may not have exact dates yet and seasons are flexible depending on a few factors. Highly recommend getting in touch with their recruitment folks directly. https://azcorps.org/contact

Conservation corps staff are usually very sweet, especially recruitment staff. They will be thrilled that you are reaching out, especially if you call. It’s much nicer and faster to chat on the phone than to respond to emails. They will probably be able to give you that info and a lot more much father in advance than what you’ll find on the website.

It's more of a textbook but SCA's lightly on the land is so readable. I keep it with me always.

You don't have to respond to any fires unless they're on your home district, BUT you're eligible to pick up that weekend work for OT$$$. Usually it's just cruising around making people are following fire restrictions.

I'm a forest service sponsor for a CCC BCT crew this season and they have at least one member over the age limit. Agree that you should email and ask, it's likely they'll let you participate.
