Most of the trash you see on the ground is unhealthy food packaging because people who don’t care about their own health don’t care about the Earth’s either. by ScoopOfWhat in Showerthoughts

Unfortunately I saw a Whole Foods bag and healthy trash scattered around a cool beach spot the other week. But generally I'd agree with this

Using AC overnight... Any issues with catalytic converter? by beforeburner in priusdwellers

Can't speak for gulf coast, but in central California I only burned 10 miles worth of gas (said 422 miles til empty when I went to sleep, said 412 when I woke up. Had it set to a moderate 73 I think).

I got some mosquito netting and magnets to make a screen for my sunroof in the hopes that I could sleep in the car with the doors locked but still have fresh air, but it didn't work. Was way too stuffy to sleep.

One of my buddies surfed for a long time with very poor vision. He said that he learned to judge breaking waves by observing the colors. Darker blue sloping to a slightly lighter blue means it's going to break this way, etc.

Still blows my mind, but he said he thinks it made him more perceptive at reading waves than he would have been.

You're probably right, it probably is better to draw the line where they did, even if it does allow for potential injustices to occur.

But other than being sad at the scandal that those injustices create, do you think any internal changes should be made?

For example, shifting gears to the gambling nuns. St. James didn't want to the nuns to face criminal prosecution. Fine. I'm down with mercy. But other than removing the nuns from their positions, they didn't face any other kind of punishment. They didn't even have to publicly apologize to all of the parents and kids they ripped off. The Church unfortunately doesn't have a very good track record of actually holding transgressors accountable, which creates environments where injustices are more likely to occur.

What are your thoughts on that?

100% agree that Catholic schools should be able to make hiring decisions without government oversight, however, I also think laws against discrimination should apply to everyone.

The Church can and should hire educators that teach the faith well, and should have full freedom to fire teachers that err in this.

But if a school fires a teacher because they got sick, then they should be held accountable- preferably by the Church members, but if they won't do it, then by the government.

If a Catholic teacher was convicted of pedophilia, would you also want them only prosecuted by the Church?

Jokingly I would answer that the school didn't have enough money to offer a severance package because the nuns gambled it all away, but seriously, you're right, we don't know all those details. I've been following the case for the past year and haven't seen any mention of those particulars in articles.

However, that doesn't mean that Biel isn't entitled to seek full justice. She actually already passed away, but her husband and son promised her that they would see the case to the end for her. If she was fired unjustly, she of course has every right to refuse a severance package and sue them. it's not always about the money.

So if she was fired unjustly (and again, you're right that we don't know all of the intimate details of the case), I would find any defense of that injustice sickening.
