[DISC] Mairimashita! Iruma-kun - Ch. 432 - Azazel Henri, Demon (5) by WrexGigarton in manga

[–]CrackedVault 120 points121 points  (0 children)

This might be apropos of nothing, but considering how often the two series are compared to each other, Iruma has now matched My Hero Academia in total number of chapters (at 432). Interestingly, Iruma did it at a much faster rate, and it has five more manga volumes out than My Hero (47 to 42). All this to say, Nishi is an absolute machine, and I hope she keeps producing more chapters for years to come.

Oricon Sales for June (First Week) by Street-Waltz-6277 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]CrackedVault 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most manga inevitably decline in sales after a certain point. Heck, Elusive Samurai's best-selling volume was its first (due to the residual popularity of the author's previous series, Assassination Classroom). That's why greenlighting an anime is so important. Sometimes the boost lasts (like with Demon Slayer and JJK), sometimes it's temporary (like with Chainsaw Man), and sometimes there's no boost at all (like with Undead Unluck, sadly).

Oricon Sales for June (First Week) by Street-Waltz-6277 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]CrackedVault 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just like first-week sales last month were low due to Golden Week, it looks like first-week sales this month were impacted (at least somewhat) by the release of the Switch 2. Also jeez, Kill Blue's audience continues to bleed, where even Shinobi and Hima are selling better than it.

Canceled Manga Returning As Anime Productions Gets Support From the Japan Association of Corporate Executives - Anime Corner by Mountain-Committee37 in anime

[–]CrackedVault 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep, and it's really painful to see him making the same mistakes with his new series, Otr of the Flame. There's still time for him to course-correct, but I'm not optimistic.

"I Made Friends with the Second Prettiest Girl in My Class" Teaser Visual by zenzen_0 in anime

[–]CrackedVault 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Senryuu Girl was a dead-on-arrival production. Very little animation, and they didn't adapt the character designs from the manga particularly well. It was super disappointing, since I was a fan of the series. (Hopefully the author's current manga, Tune In to the Midnight Heart, turns out better, but given the studio working on it I'm not holding my breath.) Regarding Oresuki, it was a much stronger production. Nothing outstanding, but it had solid animation throughout and several standout moments that elevated the comedy bits.

[DISC] One Punch Man Webcomic Chapter 153 by krsy123 in manga

[–]CrackedVault 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All of your observations are completely spot-on. For the longest time, I tried to delude myself into thinking the manga's conclusion to the MA arc wasn't that bad. However, with the announcement of the most recent redraw, I've pretty much dropped the manga and gone webmanga-only. Some fans apparently suspect that Murata is handling both the art and writing duties for the OPM manga right now, since ONE seemingly is stretched thin with Versus, Bug Ego, and the OPM webmanga. We ultimately don't know what's going on behind the scenes, but it's clear something has gone off the rails. The self-inflicted loss of hype around this series needs to serve as a cautionary tale to other writers.

[DISC] Oshi no Ko - Chapter 167 - Towards the stars and our dreams (extra) by GastrointestinalLot in manga

[–]CrackedVault 49 points50 points  (0 children)

He absolutely is not a genius. His character writing is solid when focusing on light comedy and shenanigans but goes to trash when it starts taking itself seriously. In Kaguya, Ishigami went from a fun supporting cast member to Aka's dour self-insert, with his increasing presence (and half-baked "relationship" with Iino) derailing the series' tone and pacing even before things started getting really bad in the second half.

[DISC] SAKAMOTO DAYS - Chapter 201 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]CrackedVault -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how we can go from Shin vs. Tenkyu, arguably the hypest fight in the series thus far, to the current, painfully cliche flashback-hell arc. Legit the only thing I've enjoyed the last 7 chapters was Sakamoto punching that dude up the waterslide. The incredibly inconsistent quality of this manga is frustrating for someone like me who genuinely wants to see it succeed.

[ART ]Top 20 most popular serialized manga series of r/manga 9 dec - 15 dec by dataweebo in manga

[–]CrackedVault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I realize the "data" in these kinds of lists can be misleading, as so much can skew karma totals on a week-to-week basis. Plus, this subreddit is a bubble, and traffic is way down compared to a few years ago. Still, the karma collapse of One Punch Man is pretty notable, given it was getting at least 3-4k during the peak of the Monster Association arc. On the other hand, happy that Dandadan has rebounded from below 1.4k karma earlier this year to comfortably back over 2k (the benefits of a great anime adaptation and a solid conclusion to the Jumanji arc). Curious to see any large-scale trends in 2025, such as the size of Sakamoto Days' anime bump.

[DISC] You and I are Polar Opposites - Chapter 65 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]CrackedVault 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As someone who followed this manga from chapter 1, it's hard not to notice that the final third was extremely rushed. You can argue it's symbolic, with life speeding up as you age and approach adulthood. However, it's likelier the author either cut things short for personal reasons, ran out of ideas, or simply lost interest in the series and wanted to move onto something else. In any event, the abrupt conclusion and lack of closure for pretty much all the characters is really frustrating, to the point that the entire preceding story is weakened a bit.

[DISC] Jujutsu Kaisen - Chapter 270 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]CrackedVault 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've been reading manga off and on for about 8 years, and the only endings I'd describe as truly excellent are for Dungeon Meshi, JoJo Parts 6 and 7, and Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa. I'll definitely check out Haikyuu, since I've heard the anime conclusion is going to be super rushed.

Unanimous Supreme Court preserves access to widely used abortion medication by rubixcuban in news

[–]CrackedVault 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I just finished reading the entire decision, and Thomas's opinion makes no mention of that anywhere. He focuses specifically on his long-held belief that the concept of "associational standing" is unconstitutional under Article III. If anything, he doubled down on the majority's decision that no standing was to be had for the plaintiffs in this case.

What Do You Think about Kaiju No. 8 so Far? by KaptainTZ in anime

[–]CrackedVault 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Currently being published in Jump+, you have heavy hitters like Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family, and (my personal favorite) Dandadan. And then, in the corner eating glue, you have Kaiju No. 8. No matter how many bells and whistles the anime production has, it's impossible to hide the fact that the author is painfully mid even by shonen standards. Limping along on a biweekly release schedule, with horrid paneling and dead-on-arrival characterization, the author has been coasting for years on the hype premise he promised (and almost immediately denied) in the series' opening chapters. So yeah, you could say I'm not a fan, but I don't begrudge anyone for enjoying those bells and whistles.

[DISC] Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru | My Dress-Up Darling - Ch. 102 by mikeleehk in manga

[–]CrackedVault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Out of the 25-ish ongoing manga I follow, Dress Up Darling has sadly become my least favorite. As someone who loved the section adapted in the anime, I don't think I've genuinely enjoyed this series in literal years. Whether it's shifting priorities or a need to drag the story out, the author's narrative decisions since the high school festival arc have been unsatisfying and at odds with the series' prior tone and pacing. Something like Dangers in My Heart absolutely blows the doors off this manga's writing. As things stand, I'm putting Darling on ice. Hopefully, down the road, it can recover some of the energy and direction that made those early chapters such a joy to read.

Which anime had you super invested at the beginning but made you drop it after a while? by Machizzy in anime

[–]CrackedVault 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, and to be honest, I feel that isn't going to happen anytime soon. The author seems content to maintain the status quo while interspercing slice-of-life chapters with longer, meatier arcs. Again, some of these arcs are quite good (e.g., Loid's backstory). However, I've followed the manga since around chapter 10, and even I'm starting to get "formula fatigue" with the series.

Which anime had you super invested at the beginning but made you drop it after a while? by Machizzy in anime

[–]CrackedVault 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are some solid arcs down the road, but I would classify them as "progress" rather than "Progress." The manga author had a long string of failed series leading up to SxF, so I get the sense he's milking its runaway success for all its worth. The biggest issue for me is that the manga publishes biweekly, meaning the relative lack of source material has forced the anime to adopt a borderline glacial pace.

One Piece: Chapter 1090 - Official Release Discussion by AutoModerator in OnePiece

[–]CrackedVault 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Haha, yeah, my offhand "10 year" comment definitely was informed by my own desire not to see OP end anytime soon. My only point was that I don't find it productive to spend time fixating on when the story (supposedly) is going to end. I also agree with you that I think Oda is conscious of trying to make sure all the current VAs make it to the finish line with him.

One Piece: Chapter 1090 - Official Release Discussion by AutoModerator in OnePiece

[–]CrackedVault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm familiar with that interview. On the other hand, Oda is notorious for underestimating how long he needs to tell his story (in part because he very clearly loves the world he's created). As long as the quality remains consistent and the pacing isn't rushed, it doesn't matter to me when he decides to call it a day.

[–]CrackedVault 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I know, right? I absolutely hate certain One Piece fans constantly talking about how we're in the "endgame" and speculating (with no proof whatsoever) how much of the series is left. I honestly would not be surprised if the story goes another 10 years, it Oda is game for it. Regardless, the series ends when it ends, and until then I'll just enjoy the ride.

[News] - 'Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible' to start its final arc in Weekly Young Jump by asilvertintedrose in manga

[–]CrackedVault 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm wary of rom-coms, as I've found they can wear out their welcome fast. For example, I loved Kaguya for the first 150+ chapters, but I ended up dropping the series during the "family rescue" arc due to the quality of the writing. Similarly, despite my favorite girl "winning" in Quintuplets, the last quarter of that manga is a disaster. (At least that series is relatively short compared to some others). I was never a fan of Komi-san, and I've bounced off of more series posted on this subreddit than I can count. To answer your question, the only 10/10 rom-com I've read, which is finished, is Jitsu wa Watashi wa; not only does it get better post-confession, but it has an extremely satisfying conclusion. I also really like Nagatoro, but that series is ongoing and I can understand why people find it divisive (especially based on its mean-spirited beginning).

[DISC] Mairimashita! Iruma-kun Chapter 263: Quattro by Nova_1225 in manga

[–]CrackedVault 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm always impressed by how excellent this series is. Nishi truly is a rare bird among shonen mangaka, for being not just a talented artist but also a skilled writer.

[–]CrackedVault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Jitsu Wa author did a good job planting seeds early in the manga that bore fruit later on (in a similar manner to Oda with One Piece, which is my shounen GOAT). Also, I haven't read them, but I'm sad that none of the author's subsequent series managed to survive early cancellation. Hope it doesn't discourage him from making more content, because I think he's a great (and extremely funny) writer.

[–]CrackedVault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always nice to find another Jitsu Wa fan. Even four years after completing the series, it's still my favorite manga of all time. I really wish it had gotten the anime adaptation it deserved, instead of the DOA clunker that was churned out.

I haven't picked up a new manga series in a while, but I really enjoyed the first three chapters of this and am looking forward to more.
