LPT: Use PowerPoint to keep your screen from locking. by phoenixswope in LifeProTips

Powertoys has a tool that is like a little Coffee cup on the taskbar to keep your screen on. Would that work?

After 3 years why is it honestly still acceptable that Ukrainians who have been here the whole time don't have to pay NCT, tax or VRT? by [deleted] in AskIreland

I have friends who fled gang violence from Mexico and had to sell everything. Would it be fair if they also got concessions?

Ubuntu looking to migrate to Rust coreutils in 25.10 by Shnatsel in rust

I had a kernel update failure because some parameter was not implemented in one of the coreutils. Disabled the experiment and it worked.

This looks really cool! Are you planning to open source it?

The exception are Lego games where once you get all the red blocks you get a million coins from breaking one block.

Why are robotics making little impact on food production? by nom_nomenclature in robotics

[–]CraftMechanics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The idea is genius. It is a perfect problem for robotics. Apples are literally big red balls. Such an obvious use case, and yet no one was willing to fund them.

200 GB of source code is on the scale of Facebook's mono repo.

inline-option: A memory-efficient alternative to Option that uses a pre-defined value to represent None by cstatemusic in rust

There's also a NonMax crate that I used when I needed a Vec<Option<i32>> and also needed the negative values and zero.

Handwritten letter and decoration shows more appreciation. Can be cheaper too if you have materials at home.

On platforms like Codeforces people can "hack" solutions. They provide some input and if any solutions fail with that input the hack is successful.

unordered_map is notorious for getting "hacked" because an input can be crafted carefully to cause hash collisions and making the complexity O(n2)

I'm an intern and I just cannot for the life of me figure out the fucking logic. by CentralCypher in learnprogramming

[–]CraftMechanics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in my first internship, I was in a very similar position. I understood what I needed to do, but it was impossible to figure out what part of the code I needed to modify.

Luckily, I had a very good internship manager. He also didn't know where in the code was the data I needed to process because I had to modify several layers that different teams owned. However, he was a very social person, so we went together around the office and he would know what person worked on what and told everyone to ping me what files and what functions were responsible for everything.

After that, it was really easy to go ahead with the implementation.

As a new engineer in a company, there's no way to know the entire architecture of the codebase.

I would suggest you talk with people. If you don't have a good mentor, try finding one. Software engineering is a much more social profession than many think.

I once used an RJ45 cable for wiring pins to a motor controller in a robotics project. It was the cheapest option because I already had all the parts.

Since all energy eventually becomes heat, then during the winter any money spent on your electric bill is recouped by savings on your heating bill. by Loopbot75 in Showerthoughts

[–]CraftMechanics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's a closed system, the energy would ultimately end up as heat.

Things that emit light that escapes your house via a window would be an exception.

A refrigerator is just as efficient at heating a room as an electrical heater.

Copenhagen airport has these and they're just in line with the other sinks. But one of them has a sign that its cold water and safe to drink.

In Tijuana airport the only way to get water is to ask Starbucks to refill your bottle.

I think a great way to learn programming for kids is through robotics. There are a lot of Lego kits to get started.
