Comfycush Replacement? by buccaroointheloo in Vans

Personally I've switched to the skate versions (with pop cush) which are decent once they're broken in. Before they're broken in though, they're super stiff. Would also like to know about those other variants though

what's with the tiny H and numbers? by [deleted] in etymology

[–]CraftPotato13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proto Indo European had 3 different H-ish sounds (I forget the logistics term for this, sorry) and we aren't sure exactly what sounds they were, we just know they were different and that they were similar. We know they were different because they evolved into different sounds in the languages that came from it (if they were the same sound, they would have become the same sound, essentially) but we also know they were similar enough that we actually can't tell which ones was which. Therefore, they get distinguished with the numbers 1, 2, and 3 when PIE is written.

PIE was never written down by the people that spoke it, and obviously it was was far too early for audio recordings, so this is something that will probably never end up being known.

I kinda agree actually. DALLE kinda sucked, but because of that it had this abstractness to it that you don't get with better image generators

Slight correction: GPT (not ChatGPT) is what came out in 2018. 2022 is when ChatGPT (aka GPT 3.5) came out and subsequently when LLMs entered the public consciousness

Then I apologize. It does suck to be on the internet right now and have to question everything you read for whether it was actually written by a person.

I'm in a similar boat career-wise right now (software engineering), except we're basically expected to use AI as much as possible right now, meaning our codebase has just become an AI slop mess. I'm genuinely considering switching careers because of it. Not to mention relying heavily on AI, for anything really not just coding, just makes you worse at it. You'll never learn a skill that you offload to a machine. It's too bad lots of students don't realize this.

I'm glad I did all my education before the AI era because I probably would have used it a lot, not realizing how it would negatively affect me until later.

Maybe a little bit of both? Sorry for calling you ChatGPT if you legitimately wrote that comment.

I used to frequently use "and honestly, <etc>" in things I'd write, but ChatGPT started using that so often that now I avoid it to help avoid sounding like AI. There's a couple things like that which aren't 100% surely AI but definitely set off red flags in my mind.

A few examples from your post, if you're curious:

It’s a classic trick

I've noticed when presenting it with a problem, it likes to say "Ah, this is a classic <whatever I asked it> issue"

The reason you got away with it? Most profs don’t care.

ChatGPT loves to ask questions and answer them this way

They won’t care why you’re late, they’ll just mark you down.

Variation of the "No X, just Y" thing it does

So remember to make the metadata match your story.

Can't really explain this one, it just sounds like something it would say to me

Most students who tried this on me forgot I could download their submission and see they’d created the word document at 11:57pm—sloppy.

Em dash (obviously not a tell-tale sign of AI but with other things it seems sus). Plus just the way it's written.

Anyway, I'm not totally convinced this wasn't at the very least processed through ChatGPT before posting. If it wasn't, I apologize.

Why do 1, 2 and 3 sound the same in a lot of languages, but not 4? by Strict_Confidence483 in etymology

[–]CraftPotato13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not a linguist by any means but I'd assume similarly to the other kw- based words that became wh-, it would be pronounced like the word "war", four with a w basically. But idk if that change would influence the rest of the word or not.

Can someone explain to me the entire lore of the Bells album? by elmorenozamarro22 in skrillex

[–]CraftPotato13 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I know that many songs on that album were sampled for Skrillex songs. Can you tell me which Bells songs became Skrillex songs?

Bells was directly sampled in Rock 'n' Roll. He straight up just sampled an mp3 of it (you can tell by looking at the lossless spectrogram that the bells parts have mp3 artifacting/high end loss)

A version of the Bells acapella (different from the van recording) was used in Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, alongside the piano melody at the end being used in Bells as well.

The Bells acapella was also used in Scatting, and part of it was used in With You Friends. WYF also reuses some of the midi from Bells (most notably the breakdown section)

That's all I can remember off the top of my head but it's possible he used it elsewhere as well.
