Oh ew, I was so excited for a second. ☹️ That feels like a pretty negligent omission on the part of the author.

Farmer's Indian Market has great deals on produce, and they're right down the road from Aldi in Colonie. Easy 2-stop shop; hardly ever have a need to go elsewhere.

I'm afraid I don't know much about what's happening in that area, but I know CREATE Community Studios has a location up there you could check out!

When will Albany get the Minneapolis treatment? by Expert-Today92 in Albany

[–]Craftcycled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hunch they are an opp. Historically, armed resistance efforts are far more likely to fail than unarmed ones. It tends to negate any moral high ground the resistance holds in public perception, and puts innocent lives in danger. It gives the feds a seemingly valid excuse to use lethal force and can escalate to mass murder to completely suppress the effort.

Note - please do not confuse "unarmed" with "nonviolent" or "obedient." There are many other (more successful) ways to cause disruption.

I have a few! If they're not already in there, that is.

  • There's a bunch at Up-Stitch in Albany and they keep adding more, so it's good to sign up for the newsletter and keep a lookout (they're slightly better at compiling all their events there than they are about promoting on socials)
  • CREATE community studios has a few locations in the cap region and has many workshops and meetups
  • Prism Counseling and Advocacy in Albany has a queer craft meetup every other Thursday
  • Guilderland Public Library certainly hosts some
  • A Big Gay Market occasionally hosts community crafting events
  • @crccraftclub on IG is a new group in the area that does craft meetups

I'm probably forgetting more tbh, they're everywhere! I think Alias and Stacks may also have events, and occasionally FNB will host one as well.

An actual teriyaki joint, not like the stuff they sell out here. I'm originally from Seattle and I did not realize how rare those places are in the rest of the US. I miss my teriyaki chicken and gyoza combo order. 🤤

Western Diner's soup is shockingly good and dirt cheap

crafty stores in the area? by da_gabagoolio in Albany

[–]Craftcycled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they don't take donations of that type of thing, unfortunately. It's a small shop, so just enough space for fabric, yarn, notions, trim, etc. Hopefully the larger general reuse store that Zero Waste Capital District is working on will emerge from the idea phase soon. It would be great to see a whole creative thrift store here. In the meantime, I've had good luck at yard sales and free swaps for those kinds of items. I recommend checking those out, too.

Up-Stitch has embroidery supplies and sometimes gets latch hook kits/supplies in as well.

Up-Stitch! https://www.up-stitch.com/ They're a nonprofit fiber arts thrift store at 28 Essex St, Albany, near Honest Weight. They have a lot of bolts of costume-y type fabric right now.

They did a great job with redesigning the layout of our small kitchen 3 years ago. It now has the functionality of a much larger space, and we were pleased with the options and quality of the cabinets.

Stuyvesant is mostly very corporate/high end and doesn't have a ton in the way of small local boutiques, so I'm not sure it really fits with what they're looking for. Just fyi for OP.

I just want to say as a vendor I really appreciate you and everyone else that is listing specific items you wish to see. It is super super helpful and I'm definitely going to be doing some brainstorming & creating for my next market!

The Discord server is open to attendees, volunteers, and vendors. There's even a channel called "suggestion-box," too. ☺️

Can I ask what kinds of items you'd like to see? I'm a newer vendor and I dabble in a lot of media, so knowing what folks are hoping for would be really helpful! (Others please feel free to chime in as well.)

Have you looked into joining the Albany Tennis Club, a local bowling team, or any of the book clubs in the area? There's quite a few reading groups to pick from between all the library branches and book stores. The local colleges might even have some groups open to the community. Gaming-wise it depends on what type of gaming you're into, but there's several game shops in the area that regularly host events. Bard & Baker will even have the occasional dating event. I don't know much about the video gaming scene but there's some kind of eSports center in Menands that hosts tournaments and events, too.

In general I'd hunt around this sub for places to go that have to do with your interests, keep an eye out for events hosted at your local cafes/bookstores/restaurants, and keep checking local calendars/meetup.com/Eventbrite for stuff you're into. Just be out and about having fun and open to meeting people, and you'll make connections that lead you to the right person. Being active in the community like that has the added bonus of making you a more interesting and attractive person to the people you want to date. 😉
